A grain of salt

Reading is everywhere. In the daily life, a lot of information flows into our mind through reading. Maybe it is the gossip of a celebrity; maybe it is a new discovery found by a scientific organization; maybe it is the knowledge from a book. We can read a variety of information through newspapers, Internet or books. Nevertheless, don't believe every word in readings no matter where it is from.

As everyone knows that the objective of newspaper is to deliver accurate information to public in a faster way. Nonetheless, the intense competition among newspaper industry leads to the appearance of inaccurate information. In order to improve sale performance, many reporters exaggerate the facts and neglect the truth. For example, a singer in China got cancer and many newspapers reported she is dead, but the next day her agent clarified that she went into a coma and not dead. The reporters distorted the fact to catch readers’ eyes for their own profits. Thus, newspaper does not always report accurate news. In terms of Internet, it is a useful tool for gathering information and people can almost find everything needed on Internet. In fact, Internet is an invisible world and anyone can speak on Internet with an anonymous identity. As a result, misinformation such as rumors and lies can be easily spread online. What’s more, some believable websites also contain incorrect information. For instance, Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia consisting of millions of articles. It allows anyone edit it, so readers might be misled by wrong information provided.

Some people usually argue that book is the most reliable source and all information on books can be trusted. This is because books are usually written by people who are professional and well-‐versed in some fields. However, that does not mean authors would not include biased words in their articles. The Japanese army killed 300, 000 Chinese in the 1937 Nanjing massacre but the government hide the truth on textbook in 1982. Even textbook could lie to people, therefore it is crucial to have a fair judgment when reading the book. Finally, from discussed above, it is obvious that people need to take it with a grain of salt during readings. Do not automatically assume the information is right. Remember to think twice: should I believe these words or not?

Where Are You Going 'And The Ones Who Walk Away From O'

...semester, that I believe should be cut from the course in the future, is “The Story of an Hour.” “The Story of an Hour” to me was completely boring, and not very teachable. It also was not a very memorable story; while I was easily remembered all other stories when trying to determine which story should be removed, I completely forgot about this one. I don’t believe it is very teachable because there isn’t very much to say about what happens. The piece from the second half of the semester, that I believe should be cut from the course in the future is, “Saboteur.” Ha Jin’s Saboteur is well written, but it was unable to grab my attention. Maybe it is because it was assigned for the end of the semester, which is a very hard time to focus, but nonetheless, it was not interesting. The ending frustrated me and was quite disappointing. I feel as though we could have read something better that tied in with the general theme we had going on with the rest of the stories....

Religious Studies in Theism

...such a way as to make one think about it in-depth. These questions dealt with our perception of reality and our thoughts concerning life and its meaning. It challenged our religious faith and made us declare not only what we believed, but why we believed it. We read “An Atheist’s Values”, a statement of secular humanism. We then wrote a paragraph describing the views of this type of naturalist. Although brotherly love, courage, cheerfulness, and dignity are promoted in the statement, no basis or foundation upon which these virtues should come is given other than the author’s opinion. We read and discussed in class the three basic world views. By studying these views, we will be able to understand the mindset of those whose world views differs from ours. Second Week – Overview of World Views Theism is the belief in one superior being, a creator or god. This can be broken down even further into monotheistic and polytheistic beliefs. Monotheistic religions, such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, believe in one god. Polytheistic religions, such as those practiced by the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians, believe in more than one god. Theists believe in a revealed law from a greater being (god). Transcendentalists believe that god is in everything from the least to the greatest. A good example of a major religion of this type is Hinduism. All things are the same, for example, the chair, the table, and oneself. There is no distinction between good and evil....

Argument Analysis: The Ted Talk By Dave Merlin

...information that is curated to sway people to believe certain things. Dave Merlin’s focus is political parties. Although, he is from Canada most of what he talks about is universal and can be applied to most places in the world, especially in America. Dave Merlin exposes and tries to get people to realize that not everything they read is true and most of it is just propaganda used to make them feel a certain way about something specific or in this case, politicians. Dave believes that apathy does exist and people do care, however he believes that we live in a world that discourages involvement and puts obstacles in the way to further prevent and discourage that involvement. He gives many examples of the obstacles and barriers that he mentioned. He uses an ad as his first example. Dave points out how the ad is impossible to read and states how the information you need is at the bottom and in a very small and unreadable font....

Atheism vs. Catholicism

...debunk with scientific theory. Atheists seem to have a mental block about the reality of the real truth about who is responsible for even their own existence. They are more than willing to put their trust in Charles Darwin who wrote a book 150 years ago titled “On the Origin of Species” and is now commonly known as the Theory of Evolution. Atheists have no problem putting their full trust in the fact that we all descended from a common ancestor, which is what Darwin’s book was really about. Even though there is no proof to this date that Darwin was correct 150 years ago, when labs and science were in their infancy; Atheists believe he was right but they just cannot believe the Bible. The Bible is filled with witnesses to the events describe in it. Additionally, it is filled with witnesses to prophecy; both to prophecy as it was being fulfilled as well as witnessing the Prophet giving the message, but Atheists are not willing to believe; it’s just a fairy tale to them. (Jake Jones, 2009, 1, para. 3) As Richard Dawkins said, if children understand that beliefs should be substantiated with evidence, as opposed to tradition, authority, revelation or faith, they will automatically work out for themselves that they are atheists. It...

A Little Concept Called Creation

...otherwise. In the section’s I read, I found that while the book tended to get a bit intellectual and less college friendly, certain topics produced a yield that was really unlike anything I’ve read before. It should be put out there prior to diving into discussion topics that obviously two schools of thought will be presented, the sciences and the religious. The following are two almost definitions given by Davies: “Science is based on careful observation and experiments enabling theories to be constructed which connect different experiences. Central to this approach is the willingness of the scientist to abandon a theory if evidence is produced against it…Religion is founded on revelation and received wisdom. Religious dogma that claims to contain an unalterable Truth can hardly be modified to changing ideas. The true believer must stand by his faith whatever the apparent evidence against it is. (6) It is by these two definitions that most of this paper will be centered around, and very important that everyone who reads this knows how I have defined these topics and those who subscribe to them. “…Any system of thought that claims to provide an understanding of the physical world must make some statement about the origin of the world.” (7) It is with that thought I would suggest that there is very strong importance and continuing relevance of the religious concept “creation” both in the secular (science) world and the spiritual (religious) world. We learn almost from the beginning...

Ross's Poem 'Catalog Of Unabashed Gratitude'

...From reading and watching Ross’s poem I would describe his ethos as a very passionate, expressive, and laidback person. He expresses appreciation for everything in life from the good to the bad. He has a new outlook of the sorrow and pain that we go through in life as he thinks we should be thankful for it and not perceive it as a negative thing. In Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude there is a recurring phrase throughout that is “thank you”. Ross expressed his thankfulness for everything from food to the soil on the earth. I think that it is important to recognize that Gay does not ignore the harsh reality of the world's problems. Instead of dwelling on them I would surmise that Gay would try to look at the positive and say everything happens...

Political Debates

...family, those topics will become more important to me. But as a teenager I am most affected by the public educational system at this point in my life, and I listen to the politicians talk about how they are going to “fix” it. So I try to understand what they mean by “fix” the public educational system and I try to figure out what is wrong with it. Overall, I think that the teachers I’ve had over the years have done a great job preparing me for college and the work force. While we all know that no public system is perfect and improvements can be made in many areas, I feel that one area that has impacted students negatively the most is the way teachers make us learn to read and write. I am confident that most students who are currently in high school, or recently graduated, would agree that the way most teachers force students to read and write has a direct result in many students’ unwillingness, or lack of desire to read for recreation. I personally have felt like every time the teacher would make us read some obscure book or story that had little to no interest to a pre-teen or teenager, I was being “force fed” like a cow being lead to slaughter. I understand that the teacher’s job is sometimes very difficult to try and make the boring books enjoyable, and that sometimes school boards only approve books that they feel are “culturally important” or the books are being dictated by the state, but the students have no say in the types of books that are laid in front of them. If...

Argumentative Essay: Should America Get Involved?

...Should America get involved? There are many opinions on why we should go to war and why we shouldn't with ISIS. The three articles I have read had three different opinions. They were got war, stay out of this war, or as a political way of fighting rather than actual fighting. In my opinion I believe we should stay out of this war still. I believe we should stay out of this war for now because, it hasn't gotten to the extent where we need to take action. In the second article it says that George Bush recklessly conceived the invasion of Iraq. By us going to war in Iraq we just made matters worse for the people who were living there. The war that was going on there was not meant for us to be fighting in yet, and if we had just waited we...

Higher Education

...English 102 Jeremy Branstad December 3, 2011 Higher Education Education plays a major role in our society. We look to education for everything. Many individuals feel that there are different purposes for education. Some believe educations sole purpose is so we can learn. Others believe it’s so we can better ourselves financially. While others believe education is to help us develop discipline and power. Education is what makes the individual. In my opinion, education is what helps us get somewhere in our lives. There are many members in our society who believe that the whole purpose of higher education is so that we could be knowledgeable and be able to make the right choices in life, when it comes down to it. Some of us forget how crucial education is to our growth as individuals. One example of this would be Fredrick Douglas. He was born into slavery and had little options. He however, had been taught at an early age to read, unlike some other slaves. Fredrick Douglas once said, “I would at times feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing. It had given me a view of my wretched condition without a remedy. It opened my eyes to the horrible pit, but to no ladder upon which to get out (97). In this passage Fredrick Douglas seems to have given all hope. Even through all depression he continued to read and better himself. He strived to find even more information, and be knowledgeable even if the knowledge/facts hurt. By teaching himself the basics...

...Identify and describe each of the phenomena outlined in Chapter 3 that are attributed to how we perceive our social world. Priming Priming is when our mind picks up on certain things. For instance you may hear someone say something about food and you did not really pick up on it. However you may hear someone say pizza or ice cream and that is something that may interest you and you pick up on it right away. Perceiving and Interpreting Events Perceiving and Interpreting Events is how we see and understand things that we see or things that may be going on around us. Our mind at first look may make an opinion or understanding of what we think of something and most of the time we may be correct but we may not fully understand what we may see or what is going on around us until we get a better understanding about it. Phl100 Paper

...there a rational argument that shows, or at least makes it highly probable, that the universe and everything in it was created by a Supreme Being? The universe, the place we call home. Where did it come from? How did it get here? Who created it? What we have been told to believe is that there is a supreme being that created this world for himself. I remember going to church with friends or my Girl Scout meetings at the local church and reading the bible every time. And I would hear or read the name God; this wasn’t the first time I heard this mystery man’s name as both of my parents grew up in the church. I was told that we were all his children and that he created this world for us to live in. as I grew older I began to question God and the idea that he created all the things we see in nature like the flowers in the garden or the squirrels that run up the trees in my front yard. For some reasons I cannot fully explain I feel as though some things are not as they seem. Even though the bible says that God created the universe and everything in it, there has been no concrete proof and science has dispelled some of those notions. We are often told not to believe everything we see on newspapers, the internet, or televisions but the bible is one thing we are told to believe all that is written in it. Created thousands of years ago by many different people, we are led to believe that it came directly from the all mighty God. But how can words written in different languages and...
