The Shy Savior
This night wasn’t the same as usual. I would normally be to bed by now, but my body just would not allow it. I kept trying to fall asleep and I simply couldn’t. At first I didn’t understand why, but I would know soon.
When I heard Jem scream, “Run, Scout! Run! Run!” I bolted to the kitchen; it was dark but I knew this old house so well that I could navigate it with ease. I opened the 3rd last cabinet grabbed a knife and sprinted for the door. When I took my first step out the door the cold chilled me through my bones, but I would not allow it to stop me. The first person to walk in the room was Atticus’ sister Alexandra. She gave me a weird look as if she was scared and confused at the same time I looked away and she paid no attention to me after. Then the doctor walked in and did a couple of tests on the boy to see what was wrong. In the hall I heard Scout ask. “Is Jem dead?” “Far from it,” he said. “He’s got a bump on his head just like yours, and a broken arm. Scout, look that way-no, don’t turn your head, roll your eyes. Look over yonder. He’s got as bad break, so far as I can tell now it’s in the elbow. Like somebody tried to wring his arm off… Now look at me.” “Then he’s not dead?” asked Scout. “No-o!” Dr Reynolds said. I stopped listening at this point and went back into my thoughts. Why me? I didn’t deserve this. I did the right thing didn’t I? What am I talking about of course I did, I saved two children from being murdered. I mean is it that bad I killed one of the most hated men in Maycomb. So that makes it ok, right? I came back to Earth when Scout and Mr. Heck Tate walked into Jem’s bedroom. “Jem…?” asked Scout. I was leaning against the wall trying to be calm. She took a good look at me and tried to figure out who I was, of course she had never seen me before. “Come in, Heck,” said Atticus. “Did you find anything? I can’t conceive of anyone low-down enough to do a thing like this, but I hope you found him.” The sheriff scanned me and nodded. He then looked observed the people in the room, especially Jem. “Sit down, Mr. Finch,” he said in a pleasant tone. “Let’s all sit down. Have that chair, Heck. I’ll get another one from the livingroom.” Mr. Tate took a seat in Jem’s desk chair and Atticus came back with one for himself. It was nice to know that he had not expected me to sit with everyone else as I was not comfy. I once again zoned out and went into my thoughts. Did Heck find Bob? I didn’t try to hide him anywhere I just let him sit under the tree. Maybe I should’ve moved him? If he did find him will I have to go to jail? I did something wrong but how can you fault me? I did the right thing, right? The only words I heard Heck say were “Bob Ewell’s lyin’ on the ground under thst tree down yonder with a kitchen knife stuck under his ribs.
