...Shocking the art world with her black silhouette depictions of blacks and whites engaged in situations ranging from lynchings to rape and even bestiality during the pre-Civil War South, Kara Walker has achieved both notoriety and acclaim in the art world while still in her twenties. “It is hard to think of another artist in the last three or four years who has emerged as rapidly,” commented Alexis Worth on Walker in a 1996 issue of Art in New England. In a way, Walker’s goal with her art is to make the viewer gasp and laugh at the same time. “I want to provoke the audience in the most enjoyable way possible,” Walker told Artnews “I think of my art as a kind of melodrama, producing a certain giddiness that entertains but also empowers.” A blend of social commentary and humor is clearly in evidence in works such as Before the Battle: Chickin’ Dumplin’, which shows a Confederate solider kneeling to kiss a topless black woman on the breast as she drops a chicken leg in surprise. Walker employs a nineteenth-century style of art combined with an uncensored modern perspective to highlight the full range of physical and sexual exploitation during the ante-bellum era. Her art installations evolve from drawings or smaller watercolor sketches she renders that help her determine her themes, and some of her shows have included these preliminary studies in juxtaposition with the final artworks. Sometimes she cuts her images right into the wall of the gallery. Many of them life-size in scale...

...straight lines in the work other than the pins in the doll, is a straight line and can be considered pointing to the figures in the middle of the work. This straight line shows an implied line as this seems to be pointing up and directing attention. It is through this implied line that the connection from this alone object is connected to the rest of the art work. Through the use of romantic line quality this work contains heavy lines with sharp edges. This is due to the creation process. The cutout silhouettes are drawn by the artist first then they are cutout using an X-acto knife (Riley). It is through this method that the work has clear sharp edges creating the lines. These two dimensional shapes can only be imagined as life like. They carry no visual texture or color to give the illusion of having mass to exist in the third dimension. This simplistic form of shape shows only an outline of an image and therefore nothing exudes from the work. These black silhouettes typically sit motionless upon a white wall (Look for research). You Do shows no depth in its work. With no foreground, middle ground, or background (except...

...Body Biography Extra As an extra for Hiroshima, produce a visual representation of a character from the novel. Follow the directions below, glue your ‘body biography’ into your I-Notebook, then write two paragraphs explaining your biography . You may use the silhouette provided, or create your own. Requirements: • Step 1: Choose a character from Hiroshima to represent. • Step 2: Write the character’s name at the top of your paper and gather information about your character from the novel. • Step 3: Represent the following aspects of your character symbolically on the body silhouette: The Heart – Where should it be placed to best represent what this character loves most? What should it look like and what shape, color, pictures, or symbols should be included in it? If what the character loves changes, find a way to represent this visually. The Backbone – This should be presented in a way that visually conveys what motivates the character most. For example, since Jack in Lord of the Flies is obsessed with hunting, his backbone might consist of a series of pigs, or knifes. The Hands – What does the character hold in her or his hands? Items that are associated with the character either literally or symbolically should be included. The Feet – What does the character stand for or believe in? ...Bob Knight is one of the historic icons of Indiana Basketball. He is an absolute legend in the city of Bloomington. Now how awesome would it be if you had the opportunity to just hang out with him for a couple hours of so? Believe it or not, my Uncle Joe actually did. According to his story, it happend he was shooting his rifle at IU’s old rifle range below the union when Bob Knight randomly showed up in with his rifle in hand ready to shoot. Next thing you know, my uncle and Bob Knight were in the middle of a very intense shoot out. I am proud to say that was the day when my uncle Joe bested the legend himself, Bobby Knight. To this day my uncle says it was his most memorable moment of his entire shooting career. Unfortunately, IU ended up getting rid of that old rifle range and all the fun that came along with it. But now I believe that it is time for the city of Bloomington to resurrect an indoor shooting range. After talking with some of the members of Martinsville’s gun club, they said that the demand for an indoor shooting range is very high. An indoor shooting range will allow the committee to learn and become educated about guns, gun safety, and self-defense. According to findyourrange.org the nearest indoor rifle range to Bloomington is in Indianapolis. That’s entirely to far away. A shooting range would also provide people, especially college students, a temporary stress relief from school. Another reason why Bloomington needs a place like this is because...

...From once was yours, From once was Mine A misty rain descends upon my location, the brim of my hat collecting deep deposits of water, despite the melancholy weather, the sky I observe looks so marvellous and serene, each droplet of rain are as virtuous and incandescent as an angel’s tears. In all its magnificence how can something so alluring be in such an abominable reality? A reality I have had many hopes for. Looking over the city Landscape a significant amount of unfamiliar memories of sentiment return to my consciousness… A house filled with several warming amenities, a child clinging to the dress of a Middle aged woman who lies in a coffin. Fate burdened the boy in turn leaving him in pure solitude until she rescued him, being his stability through times of deep anguish. Flakes of tender snow settle on the pavement, Blossom trees engulfed in ice shimmering brightly in the Moons peer, the newly set white carpet began to sparkle like a beacon conveying the hopes and wishes of long forgotten lost souls. Nothing could ruin this moment. My eyes caught glance of an eerie alleyway seemingly leading into nothingness, inside the darkness a Woman removes her clothes, on the rumpled pile of garments the child rests and beside him against the jagged wall the woman provides her body as a source of warmth for the boy. The surrounding existence is silent, even while I can hear clearly what the Women is saying. There is a feeling, an undeniable sinking pain in my chest reminding me there...

...The Heart Chakra is the core essential to both our physical and spiritual bodies, much like the actual human heart. This Chakra collage somewhat darker than my previous pieces as I feel substantial dysfunction around the heart chakra. I have experienced significant emotional and bodily abuse through intimate relationships with others. The silhouette in the collage is shaded in ominous shades of blue and green. The posing of the silhouette is meant to illustrate a person reaching out for help after falling. Like The Damsel archetype, I’m constantly waiting for that one ‘godlike’ individual to lift me out of my turmoil surrounding love and make me feel complete again. I am aware that is an incredibly unhealthy way to operate, I should be able...

...femininity is often defined by how the female body is been perceived and represented, ‘a woman’s character and status are frequently judged by her appearance’ (Betteron 1987) Clothes, make-up and demeanour constitute identity, sexuality and social position are some of elements that constitutes a feminine body. And for centuries, Western fashion has resolutely inclined towards a more structured and tailored kind of silhouette, which exalted the virtues of sexuality, glamour and status—the backbone of the European haute couture design. Western female clothes have historically been designed to exemplify the contours of the body. While 1980s was majorly characterized by everything glitzy and glamour – with people earning big money and spending conspicuously, the era saw a emergence of a new generation of young Japanese designers whose designs exemplified the ideology of “anti-fashion” and some of these designers were Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto. The purpose of this essay is to see how Miyake and Yohji’s emergence and their unconventional design philosophy, silhouettes they created and techniques they have adopted, have called forth a new interpretation of the existing regulations and norms of clothing and fashion; and how women should be perceived and represented. To see how the representation and perception of the feminine body and western fashion had been drastically changed since the emergence of Japanese design in 1980s, it is important to compare and contrast both Miyake...

...Different techniques and tricks can be used to make the novel a play. Therefore, The Whistling Season would be a wonderful play if it had the right director and creative minds behind it. A difficult scene to include in the play would be the horse race. No one could have real horses running all around the theatre. The play would be horrible. Not to mention this would be extremely dangerous for both actors and the audience. The director might be able to find a way around this such as having silhouettes made with light and full sized horse puppets controlled by two men. The scene could start with the boys and the two horses on stage. They could saddle the puppet horses and ride them off stage slowly. Then, the audience would hear someone say, “Ready? Set? Go!” Then, the stage would get bright and the audience would see the silhouettes of the boys riding the horses. The silhouettes of light would ride from the left side of the stage to the right side of the stage and then back. When the silhouettes disappear from sight; Paul rides back in on his puppet horse from the left side of the stage. All the boys cheer and the story goes on. This is one way that a director could create this scene on stage. Paul’s dreams are a large part of the story. They are very significant since Paul is a fist person narrator. They express his feelings. Dreams are obviously an issue when creating a play. The audience has to be able to understand what is going on at all times or they will lose interest quickly...

...Thangarajah 2 " In the 1950-60’s when WWII had just come to an end and the men were returning home from war, the women were being forced out of their industrial jobs. The baby boom was at an all time high and women were expected to quit their jobs and be full time homemakers1. It was during this time that Hubert De Givenchy was just starting out on his own as a couturier in Paris and was know to have a minimalistic and unconventional style. His aim during the 50’s and into the 60’s was to help empower women through their clothes and break down the feminine ideals of grace and beauty, abandoning the stereotypes associated to them. He allowed for the flexibility of the female identity through his multiple creations of contrasting silhouettes that were rather rebellious and unconventional at the time that it was being made. Hubert De Givenchy was born on 21st february 1927 in Beauvais, France. Hailing from a very prosperous family, Hubert went on to attend college at Beauvais before moving to Paris to pursue his dreams of being a couturier. In 1944 he joined the couture house of Jacques Fath while attending school at Ecole Des BeauxArts2. Later in the 40’s he took a series of jobs as an assistant designer—first with Fath, then with Lucien Lelong, Robert Piguet, and Elsa Schiaparelli before opening his own couture house in 1951. His association with fashion continued over the next 4 decades, having an extremely illustrious career, Givenchy had a mature style often using...

...fade out of style. “Each season a denim consultant came in from Craft to present to me there predicted denim trends. I remember in 2002 I was presented with two silhouettes the super skinny and the super balloon. At this time he strongly believed both would take off and I do remember some designers using the balloon style for a few seasons but the skinny jean was the silhouette that took off. Men’s fashion moves a lot slower then woman’s and it took a couple of years for high street to take the skinny jean trend on in 2004 by Topman” Molloy (18/11/14 Primary) Molloy worked as a trend forecaster for WGSN.com and has discussed his experience of how the skinny leg came into light and shared his knowledge that the east end of London is where he’s spotted the fashion forward street style of skinny fit. And that usually when a trend becomes main stream they usually drop it. But these trend setters still wear the skinny fit....

...about his inspirations while creating this collection. His response to the question was “we started off with a really graphic look, lots of blacks and whites and slightly 60's an almost Bridget Riley (English painter) print influence. Volume is important too, you'll see blues, a bird print that is very Hitchcock and silver foil that references a neo-futuristic vibe.” KEY COLOURS -The collection did not have many colours that deviated from Joe Fresh's usual palate. There were accents in golds, silvers, yellows and blues. The spring vibe was really apparent in the clothes that were shown off this year. KEY FABRICS -The fabrics which were most prominent were cottons, polyester, metallic, sequins and silks. MAJOR SILHOUETTE -The major silhouettes for Joe Fresh this year were shift dresses and straight cuts, nothing tight to the body. DISTINCTIVE MOTIFS -Distinctive motifs that stood out to me were the metallic colouring on the clothes and how the collection had a 60's feel, but at the same time had a futuristic vibe. This was a great combination which made me eager for more. ACCESSORIES -Joe Fresh...
