The invention of the Internet and new technologies has restructured the way in which we interact with media and each other. Instantaneous communication and an open platform on social media have blurred the lines between public and private life. Over the years, what we considered to be public or private information has completely changed. Also, the amount of information and content, which can be instantaneously accessed, has had an effect on our media use. This essay will use qualitative and quantitative data gathered from Subject X to discuss the impact of social media on the distinction between public and private life as well as the consumption of media content. The main areas of discussion will revolve around Subject X’s use or lack thereof …show more content…
Snapchat is a media platform built around the privacy. Its concept of disappearing pictures and videos has made it one of the more unique social media applications that exists today. Subject X can be found on Snapchat frequently throughout this twenty-four hour period. In most instances, Subject X goes into Snapchat to check updates of contacts’ stories. The subject rarely actively engages in content production for Snapchat, but simply observes the activities of contacts via their Snapchat stories. In this aspect, Snapchat is similar to other social media platforms as it allows users to a post a snap, which can be seen by many people. Siva Vaidanyathan proposed four frameworks of Privacy Interfaces in his article, “Welcome to Surveillance Society”. The majority of the content is easily accessible over the Internet and is entertainment based. However, the subject expresses a desire to keep up with the latest developments. There is a sense of urgency in the amount of attention, which the subject gives to social media as well as traditional media. Many of the media consumption activities are described as routine. For example: at 10:32 a.m. Subject X logs into YouTube to watch the latest episode of Wendy Williams’ Hot Topics. This action is described as being part of a, “daily weekday routine”. Others include checking for new mail, watching new episodes of Divorce Court, the Steve Harvey show and using the Internet streaming website Tubeplus. The routines indicate that these media platforms regularly upload and update the latest content to attract audiences. Subject X devotes many hours of attention to these practices. This is common as we now live in an attention economy. Media consumers have switched from being consumers to producers of attention (Senft 350). The attention Subject X devotes to the consumption of media content has unwillingly made the subject a producer. The amount of attention given by Subject X to these types of media is excessive. Too many hours are spent online and the Subject can be seen consistently engaged in these activities over a sixteen-hour period.
