Before the creation of social networks, instant messaging systems such as AIM were all the rage. It may be hard for children born recently to imagine a world without social media, it is quite new after all. Social media are web 2.0 based applications. They rely on user-generated content that is maintained by the organization. The U.S. Digital Consumer Report shows that 47% of mobile phone users use social media apps daily (Wee). Social media has become a way of life in this modern age of technology. It seems that everyone and their cat is on at least one social platform. The challenge is using these tools in a way that is beneficial to our personal and professional lives. Social networks hold a lot of advantages over traditional paper-media including reach, usability, immediacy, and frequency (Wee).
Facebook is the most popular social media site in the world, averaging about 1.1 billion visits a month (Wee). Launched in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, it was originally designed for college …show more content…
At the F8 conference, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook is working on a virtual reality element, augmented reality, and a feature similar to Snapchat in it’s Messenger app (Hern). Facebook Spaces is a VR Chatroom where users can hangout with their friends and do things together. It is attempting to include those who do not have VR equipment by letting them join in on a flat screen video chat (Hern). Facebook wants give users the ability to “augment” reality by editing photos. Zuckerberg showed a simple capability of this feature “that “you can add a second coffee mug” to your picture, “so it looks like you’re not having breakfast alone”” (Hern). More creative uses can be pinning a review of a restaurant to it’s window in your photo, or superimposing the pace of your run on a photo (Hern). Facebook has added filters to it’s camera, much like Snapchat uses, but the Facebook version of these filters is far less
