...TERM PAPER FOR SCIENTIFIC LITERACY, PHYS 10062. Hello Class, It is time to start thinking about the term paper, so here is the info: First, the subject: I would like you to write a paper on some scientific discovery that in your opinion had a major impact on some important aspect of everyday life. As an example, let us say that you picked the discovery of the laser. It certainly had an impact on many areas, so this would be a good choice. So how should the paper be organized and what should it contain? Let me begin with the outline of the paper that you should follow: 1. Title and author (you) 2. The paper itself. This should be divided into sections that include a. Introduction b. Body of the paper divided into sections and subsections, with subtitles) c. Conclusions 3. References (i.e., citations of literature sources that you used) The text of the paper should not be less than 8 pages, double-spaced. I encourage you to use figures to help illustrate your story. They don’t count toward the 8-page length, but will make your story clearer. Remember: a picture is worth 700,000 words. I will let you decide what to put in what section, to describe the discovery of what you are discussing, and show why it is important in ordinary life. As an example, if I were writing about the laser, in the introduction I would describe the scientific background (optical principles) that led to its discovery. Where appropriate, you can talk about the history...

...Valtinson ENGL 1113-08 May 1, 2015 Individuality through Transferability Writing is something that everyone does. Whether one likes it or not, they end up using their words. People tend to write about subjects that interest or relate to them. Everyone has their own way of writing, but their way was influenced by another source whether they know it or not. Individuality in writing is influenced through transferability. Technical writing is something that is learned. In school everyone was taught how to format an essay or different types of writing like poems or stories. Anything that I did in class I was always given a template of how the instructor wanted the paper to be written. This would have word count, the format, and what the paper should be about. All throughout school we learned the fundamentals of writing starting with letters, words, sentences, paragraphs, to structures of writing like essays and poems. The thing that is learned from writing is technical. As my English education grows the technical side is less focused on while the content is the most important thing. Content is the writing that I am doing now. The content portion of writing is not learned but influenced by others. My writing becomes influenced through examples like essays. In this English class, I believe that that’s how these three previous essays worked out. The Scholarly Discourse Unit paper was a paper that had us synthesize how we thought the writers Gee, Swales, and Porter connected to...

...I face a lot of challenges when it comes to creating an acceptable paper. I have a negative outlook on my writing, I write a lot of cliche things, fragment sentences are my weakness, my vocabulary is poor, and I over think what is wanted from what I write. Struggling with this introduction, for instance, is one of my major weaknesses. A lot more work goes into it than there seems. I have to think “Did I capture the attention? Does my audience know where I’m going with this paper? Is it enough to make them curious to read more?” In the beginning of the semester, my introduction basically went straight into the paper like it was the first body paragraph. It was a confusing surprise. I’ve since worked on my introductions so they give more explanation toward the overall reason for the paper. Even if it’s not the best you’ve ever read, I’m more aware of why it’s not and that there are ways to strengthen it. I’d like to believe because of how self-aware I...

...This specific paper introduced me to a wide range of research opportunities that could make or break a paper. What I loved most about this piece is that I did not have to only choose one option for it, I was able to choose maybe two research styles or more. For my finished research paper I did use at least two to three research styles. I actually did all three types of research for my paper observation, survey and interview. I found observation to be the most useful due to actually gaining more reviews rather than maybe my ten or twelve interviwee’s. This particular assignment made me a better writer at the end of the semester for the simple purpose of teaching me something I did not know. Throughout this assignment process I choose to do all three just to witness which one could give me a better start furthermore, more information for my paper as a whole. I did find this helpful for the reason of me now using one if not all of these options the next time I may do a similar paper and it also makes the paper a little easier informational wise. I really worked hard on this individual assignment by trying to create a unbiased survey that covered the most important questions, also I tried to ask the most important questions during my interviews all while...

...out Yellow Wall Paper, the narrator seems like she is an average woman with mental instabilities of her time. As the story progresses it shows that the story is actually her getting over the death of her husband by solving the issue she has with the room she is mentally trapped in. The house and grounds are actually portraying the inside of her mind. The house is actually her mind and the grounds are the healthy vibrant portion of her psyche as she say’s “there is a DELICIOUS garden! I never saw such a garden- large and shady, full of box- bordered paths, and lined with long grape- covered arbors with seats under them” (Gilman, Charolotte. YELLOW WALL PAPER. PG 1). This describes a vibrant, lush environment which would be the healthy portion of her mind. She then goes on to describe the house by saying “the place has been empty for years. That spoils my ghostliness, I am afraid, but I don’t care- there is something strange about the house” (Gilman, Charolette YELLOW WALL PAPER.. PG 1). She seems to describe the house as a negative, which would be the negative section and memories in her brain. It was important to show that there is a healthy side to her psyche so that through the story it is clear that the issues she has in the house “her mind” progressively are solved and comes to except them. Once she gets into the house and is settled into her room she is confronted by the memory of her husband which is represented through the horrific yellow wall paper in her room and...

...Research Writing can be Fun Remember the last time your teacher asked you to write a research paper on a subject of your choosing? You probably groaned and grimaced, wiped your sweaty brow, and gasped. Relax. Take a deep breath. This paper will show you how writing for a research paper assignment can not only be done easily, but be fun! Fun you say? How? First, pick a topic that you know something about. Do you like looking for sea shells when vacationing on the beach with your family? Skateboarding at the local park? Playing video games with your friends? Baking with your mom? Making money shoveling snow for your neighbors? Playing soccer or hockey with your team? Reading books? Riding your bicycle? I think by now you get the idea – choose something that you already know a little something about and enjoy. The next steps is to research that topic. So let’s take the example of collecting sea shells on the beach when vacationing with your family. You can approach the research from several angles. You can research the specific types of shells that are located in a specific region. You can research the area where you found the shells. So let’s say that you found a conch shell on the beach in the Bahamas. You can start researching conch shells. The first step to research is one you already know about “Google”. Type Conch Shell in the google search engine and here are just three of the many choices: http://www.naturefoundationsxm.org/education/queen_conch/how_queen_conch_grows...

...required to write numerous essays and papers for various subjects, all requiring different styles and techniques. Before immersing myself in the writing process I would try and think of whom I am writing to and what I am writing about. I always assumed I was writing for the audience of my teacher. Writing an argumentative research paper is something I had yet to accomplish in my college career, not only was it thought provoking, this paper also challenged me in numerous ways, such as, understanding who I should be directing my thoughts towards throughout the essay, as well as the simple steps of organizing my thoughts...

...thesis and a topic — a topic is something like “Slavery in Huck Finn.” That's not a case, only a general area. A thesis, on the other hand, makes a specific case, it tries to prove something. One way to tell a thesis from a topic: if it doesn't have an active verb, it's almost certainly still a topic. Controversial. That doesn't mean something like “Abortionists should be shot” or “George W. Bush's election was illegitimate” — it means that it has to be possible for an intelligent person to disagree with your thesis. If everyone agrees on first sight, your thesis is too obvious, and not worth writing about. It also has to be something you can reasonably argue about: it's not enough merely to give an unsupported opinion. Analytical, not evaluative. A college English paper isn't the place to praise or blame works of literature: theses like “Paradise Lost is an enduring expression of the human spirit” or “The Sound and the Fury isn't successful in its choice of narrative techniques” aren't appropriate. That's the business of book reviewers. No need to give thumbs-up or thumbs-down; evaluate the work on its own terms. About the readings, not the real world. Never forget that books are books and, if you're in an English class, you're being asked to talk about them. Many books are unreliable guides to the real world outside the texts, and it's dangerous to talk about, say, Renaissance attitudes toward race based only on your reading of Othello. Talk about Othello. Specific. It's not...

...Throughout the course in my letters and feedback, I have had many comma splice comments. I want to be able to recognize those when I am proof reading my own paper. Another area I want to improve on, is putting my ideas that are in my head on paper in a way that it makes sense. I have so much to say, but sometimes struggle on the “right” way to say it so that the reader understands what I am talking about. I have gotten better at organizing my paper so that it flows and make more sense, but it is still something I want to work on. I want to be able to add better transitions in my paper, so that my ideas don’t come to an abrupt end with no conclusion, which is something I noticed in my culture assumption essay. Improvements in my Reading Throughout the coursework I have sharpened my critical analysis skills. I have glanced back at some of my chapter summary writing assignments and noticed how my analysis have evolve. I have better been able to relate and find my own experience in a writing or book. I was able to connect with some of the points Robert Putnam stated on a personal level. Throughout high school, and even in college, I just read my book to complete assignments, not really taking the time to consider how it may connect with my life. This is something I did this semester with Robert Putnam’s book, “Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis”. Areas to improve in my...

...right there. Before I really get all mushy about PR and its definition, I would first like to tell you something. Usually, I would start my composition with something like the first paragraph. I would talk about PR, its meaning, and then write down what qualities a PR professional must possess. I was originally planning to do just that. When I got home from school last Friday, I immediately sat in front of my desktop computer, meaning to start with this reflection paper. It was 8:08 P.M then. 10…20…50 minutes had passed and I still didn’t have a clue on what to write. I told myself, “It’s okay, this paper isn’t due until Thursday next week anyway. I don’t need to finish it now. I’m off the hook.” Saturday came, and the same thing happened. I just stared on my PC’s screen for 3 hours! Heck, there wasn’t even a single letter on that blank document! It was clean and white! But then again, it’s okay. I told myself that there’s still tomorrow, and the day after that, and then the next, next day after that. Surely by then, I would have come up with something brilliant for this piece. I was totally wrong. I started to panic when Sunday came and I still didn’t know what to do with this paper. “What is wrong with me?! Why couldn’t I write something as simple as this? It’s just a mere reflection paper, for Pete’s sake! IT’S JUST PR!” And then it hit me. Who am I to say that “It’s JUST PR”? Who gave me the right to say something like that when I don’t even know what Public...
