Reflection

...things especially in my English 1101 class. I thought I knew everything there was to know about writing when I came in on my first day, but I was very wrong. My professor assured me that there is much more to writing than just putting words down on paper. Knowing all of this, I have now learned how to improve on my writing skills, how to write better grammatically correct sentences, incorporate quotes and research and give as well as get criticism. When I came into this semester as a freshman I was very confident in the quality of my writing. However, my self-esteem was soon crushed shortly thereafter. Even though my writing skills had been very good compared to my classmates in high school, at the university level they were just average. After hearing about the on average grades students get in professor Elliott’s class, I knew I had a lot of work to do to receive an A on a paper. I had to do something quick to learn how improve on my writing skills. With the help of my teacher, she made us a read a variety of articles that were very interesting, yet also very insightful and helpful at the same time. One article that really stood out to me was called “Engfish.” In high school, teachers tend to get really impressed if you have really big words in a paper, but when you incorporate such large words, you tend to start losing your argument and start talking about nothing. After reading about “Engfish and having these helpful hints my professor threw my way, I...

The One

...downs. I've been able to write papers but I've always needed a little bit of help to complete them. My mom has always been there when I am having problems writing papers. There have been times where I am amazing at them and knock them out like nothing. These are papers are usually short stories or something I can relate to. Then theres times where nothing comes to me and it seems like it takes forever to write them. When writing the papers one of the difficulties came from what I was writing about. In high school papers stressed me out because I knew I was going to have trouble with them. When I had to write my paper for chemistry, I worried about the length, how many citation, and how to cite it. I ask myself how does confidence impact my ability to write? On the one hand the papers I have the most confidence writing and I favor the most are ones where we have to tell a made up story or about a life event. I can write these very easily because I can remember the event very vividly or can make up a story with lots of detail. With event stories I usually just remember then write and occasionally go back to reread and fill some parts with more detail. In high school one of the first papers I had to write in my English class about a life event that changed your life. I thought to myself this is really easy to write about. I had an idea and there was no length on the paper so I didn't have to worry about how long it was. I was ready for this paper. I had confidence and I knew inside...

8th Grade Narrative

...Introduction Once upon a time, I was in 6th grade. I didn’t do anything really besides work. This goes for 7th and 8th. Nothing but work. Since nothing really happened in all of my Junior High years, I guess I’ll have to think of something 6th Grade This year was any average year. Besides the fact I was nervous of going because I thought I would forget my classes and walk into the wrong one like some lunatic. Lucky for me I wasn’t that dumb. The teachers were okay, but two out of the four stuck out. These two were Mr. Hern and Mrs. Metcalf (I didn’t know what Misses to use.) Mr. Hern was cool because he was the most laid back teacher on the planet, and Mrs. Metcalf was cool but I can’t really explain why. She just was. A lot of people here probably talked about the egg thing. They either said theirs broke or theirs lived. The egg thing really...

Addiction

...it something that we feel or is it really a choice? For years in my personal life I have seen addiction take over my whole family through drugs and alcohol. It has destroyed many of people and it has helped many of people at the same time. When the word “addiction” is said it is manly used in a negative way, but it can also be positive as well. So is it or is it not a choice? In the beginning of any addiction it always starts off as choice or “something you want to do”. You want to drink, you want to do drugs, you want to have sex, etc. As time goes on though those so called “choices” that you once had start to become more addictive and more addictive until you are at a point where you don’t feel like or want to do something for your own pleasure, but you need it, you need to drink, you need to smoke, you need to have sex, etc. That once choice of addiction you had now becomes a disease, a uncontrollable need physically and mentally. So what now? Should you keep on believing that this once called “choice” that you had can be controlled or is it indeed an actual disease that is uncontrollable and that you may need help for (that’s even if you want the help)? The cure for addiction is totally up to the addict, but it is in fact that through time the addictions that a person once wanted are now addictions that a person needs every day, every minute, and every second and that is why addiction is not choice. In Alice M. Young’s research paper Addictive Drugs and the Brain addiction...

En1420 Discussion 4.1 Empty Space

...having a subject? When there is not a subject or the subject is “nothing” the appropriate method would be to turn in a paper with nothing but empty space. This is what happens when I do not receive homework I e-mailed about and do not have what I need to do this assignment properly. The controversy stems from if I have nothing to use as a subject, do I still have a subject to use? I say yes but you may disagree. Nothing but empty space The main points of the article talk about how if you have nothing in empty space it is different than having a vacuum or lack of existence. The first point is just because you can not see anything there it does not mean it void of everything. The second point is even if there is no matter in a specific area there can still be other measured substances. The third point is that even where it appears to be nothing there can still be an atomic weight. The fourth point is that nothing can be powerful. The last point is the emptiness is more of a matter of perspective. People assume that just because they can not see anything that there is nothing there. This is far from the truth. If I asked you to look at the edge of this paper would you say this is nothing there? There is something there. There are atoms that reflect the color white. If you are looking at this on a computer screen there are electrons converted into a binary system of control. Thus, even if it looks like nothing there is still quite a bit going on in that space. Even...

Does God Exist

...Introduction God is the source of much doubt and controversy, of peace and of war. At this point in our human existence what was once certain and unquestionable has become the most questioned topic. The faithful, believing people have become unsure. I guess the question is either God exists or He doesn't. There really is no middle territory, and any attempt to remain neutral in relation to God's existence is automatically putting you in the category of unbelief. The age old question is far from being an irrelevant one, because if God does exist, then nothing else really matters; if He does not exist, then what does really matter at all. Until now I've never been put in a position where my faith was questioned. I found this title somewhere, I cannot remember where I saw it, but it describes me the best it can; as a recovering Catholic, I really am in no man’s land. Do I believe or not believe, that is the stand I have to take in this paper one way or another, yes or no, black or white. At that point this became more than a final paper. Can I, comfortably write a paper stating that God does not exist? After thorough personal inflection, I had my answer, and with much of my upbringing weighing down on me. I will try making my case for the existence of God. ("God." Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary. 2009. Merriam-Webster Online. 29 April 2009) What better place to start, than Simon Blackburn On Blackburn's projectivist view; after he sketched the outlines of his projectivist...

Civil War

...Electronic Reserve Readings Paper Week 4 Justin Allen June 29, 2015 HST/290 Gettysburg is one of the most iconic or well know battles of the Civil War. The little piece I just read was called Another View of Gettysburg. I was a great little piece that was telling the view of one man named Major General John Gibbon who also was there during that battle. Even with the first two paragraphs he states that "fighting a battle is one thing, and fighting it afterward on paper by the participants is a very different thing."(Gibbon, J. 1891) What I have taken from his work that not everything could be laid out there on paper without giving up something. Continuing this was all about the strategies taking during the time of the many battles that happened there at and around Gettysburg. It focuses on really one man that is General Meade. This piece even though being told from a military man was not too hard to follow, but you might want to familiarize yourself on the units that were there at Gettysburg and also some of the other leaders there. Overall this was great and a different point of view on what took place in one of the darkest times in American History. Moving on to the next one. How do you explain certain things in history? That is a great question but the next one I read about what about Explanatory Narrative in History. Another great little piece. It goes on making you ask yourself what is ‘explain' and how do you work it in without over explaining. Good way of putting...

Assignment 5 Professional Presence

...be eco-friendly themselves. From those earth friendly totes to recycled paper you still buy the same amount if not more. Nothing is stated about consumption so much as to what you buy and in extension from where. For example, you could buy 3 or four different shades of eco-friendly lipstick and be classified as eco-friendly. However, that' not the case. It is more along the lines of quantity. Whether it is eco-friendly or not buying five shades of lipstick over 1 is not being eco-friendly. The goal is to work more on the quantity part, not the brand, or ingredients in it. Not how it was manufactured or from where. How many are you going to purchase? Purchase the bare essentials. A few companies have stated they have gone eco-friendly by only buying what they need and nothing more. We are in a time where we waste and it needs to stop if we truly want to be eco-friendly and prevent any more damage to climate change. Reflection The author is right on the dot with this report. He clearly defines what has happened, what is happening and what should be happening. The equation for any solution has at least those three variables in it. This solution is both usable for personal and professional use. Before Al Gore's speech "An Inconvenient Truth" saving the planet was not a big thing. No one really knew much, if at all, about global warming. Both in the professional and social world nothing was being done about global warming because it was not a crises. Everyone was wasting, taking...

What Does It All Mean

...man has been able to find, we are still unable to answer what seem to be some simple questions about ourselves. Do I really exist outside of my mind or is this all a dream? Do I really have will power or the freedom to choose? What is my meaning to life? These are all topics that depending on where you are from and how you were raised will all affect your theories and/or beliefs behind your answers. With an open mind; however, these questions can open a whole new world of possibilities and maybe what you have thought to be right your entire life, to be viewed as completely wrong. How Deep Does the Rabbit Hole Go? I am sitting in a black desk chair typing this paper, feeling my fingers strike the keys. Looking at the screen but still completely aware of all my surroundings, hearing my neighbors annoying dogs bark as I type. I am feeling a little bothered. I know all of this because I am using my senses to let me know where I am and what I am doing. So the question now gets deeper…How do I know what a chair feels like, what a computer looks like, or even know what a dog is? Is there even a chair? Is all of this real? Or is this all in my mind? Nagel brings up some fascinating points in Chapter 2. How do we know anything? Everything in our lives up to this point is based on what you believe, whether it’s what a dog looks like, what a computer is…absolutely everything you know about anything has all been an experience you’ve had or something you’ve thought of. What if there was...
