“Hello, suckers.”1 Do you ever worry about going to a new school? Specifically, do you ever worry about going to Maize South Middle School (MSMS) as a new student? Well, I don’t as I’m already a student here; However, I still have advice for new students. Three things a new student should know about Maize South Middle School are not to question authority, maximize your time, and to follow the policies. First, new students should never question authority. The administration will be furious at any living, breathing being that tries to ask questions; I speak from personal experience. Although the management of this school seems to encourage critical thinking, they will get mad at the student who applies these tactics. Never should an attending student ask the administration why things are the way they are lest they yell at whoever does so. Students should also be wary of who is on their side. Primarily, teens attending middle school should not mess around in class. Those who dawdle during class periods distract others and don’t complete their work; Furthermore, this creates stressful relations between the student and the teacher. Of course, school shouldn’t just be all work and no entertainment, but students need to know when to stop. New students, focusing in class opens up time later for enjoyment. Secondarily, for all those new juvenile patrons, students should not mosey in the halls; Worse yet, students should not stop in the halls and simply block the path of others. In almost every case in which students linger in the halls, they walk into the classroom late. It seems to be a chronic disease here, so I suggest new adolescent scholars do what they can to immunize themselves. Not to mention, students who loiter in the corridors will incur the wrath of their peers. Again, new students must learn to maximize their

School Absence and Student Background Factors: a Multilevel Analysis

...International Education Journal Vol 2, No 1, 2001 http://iej.cjb.net 59 School absence and student background factors: A multilevel analysis Sheldon Rothman Massachusetts Department of Education srothman@doe.mass.edu As part of regular collections, South Australian government schools provide data on students, including individual student absences during one full term (usually 10 weeks). These data were analysed to understand how student absence is affected by student background and school contexts. A multilevel statistical model of student absence was developed using data collected in 1997, and repeated for 1999. This paper presents the findings for students in primary schools, showing that absence rates for indigenous students, while higher than the rates for non-indigenous students, are affected by school factors such as the concentration of indigenous students in the school and school socioeconomic status. student attendance, student absence, multilevel models, socioeconomic status, indigenous students Introduction Regular attendance is an important factor in school success. Students who are chronic nonattenders receive fewer hours of instruction; they often leave education early and are more likely to become long term unemployed, homeless, caught in the poverty trap, dependent on welfare, and involved in the justice system (House of Representatives 1996, p. 3). High rates of student absenteeism are believed to affect regular attenders as well, because teachers...

Modern Racism In America Today

...The title of my research paper will be Modern racism. I choose this topic because of as an American that was born in Africa it is always something that has been an interest to me. I came to America around the age of seven. I was young, and coming from Nigeria we were not taught anything about racism. My views on racism in America didn't really come from studying the history of slavery and civil rights in America, but rather from personal experiences I went through. In elementary school even though I was taught the history of African American I never really understood the impact of slavery. I merely took what I was taught as part of the curriculum, which I needed to pass a test. I never really absorbed much from learning. Most of the racist...

Teachers & Weapons

...Teachers and Weapons in Schools Jessica Rhodes Composition II WI12 Instructor S. Cochran February 10, 2013 Abstract In this paper, I will explore the controversial question of whether teachers should be allowed or required to carry weapons on school campuses. The question of whether the topic should be entertained has come up time and again after tragedies occur, the timeline of which will be summarized herein. The recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, that devastated the nation on December 14, 2012, has wrenched this debate crudely back into the spotlight. I will investigate different types of protective instruments that could possibly be used, as well as what types are used in schools that have such regulations. I will delve into the reasoning behind states that have implemented laws that allow teachers to carry guns in school and/or at school events. Included within are excerpts from this writer’s first-person interview conducted with Maria Otero-Ball, a kindergarten teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico. As a teacher of children the same age as those involved in the Newtown tragedy, Mrs. Otero-Ball offers a first-hand view on the changes that she and the school have made following the tragedy, as well as her views on the practicality of weapons in the school. My goals in preparing this paper are to expand my thoughts on the subject, peruse the thoughts of others, and explore the statistics to provide a better overall understanding of...
