...Within the deep ocean water there is a giant squid. This squid is the Architeuthis dux. Architeuthis dux has normal qualities but what makes it different and able to live in the environment it lives in? The squid has two huge eyes, a funnel and a beak. The squid lives 500 to 1000 m below the surface of the ocean. The squid has two eyes, each eye is about about 30 cm in diameter, and known to be the biggest eyes of any animal on earth! The eyes, help them by absorbing light which enables them to see very well in the dark water. Secondly, the funnel located under squids body is very useful. The squid uses its funnel as a propulsion system, drawing water into the mantle, and pushing it back out. Also, the funnel is used to "squirt ink, lay eggs,...

...Cephalopods are considered the cleverest invertebrates on earth. It is proven that they can complete complex intellectual tasks, such as recognizing faces and solving puzzles (Anderson & Richter, 2010). Yet the remarkable characteristic of cephalopods is their ability to camouflage into their environment. These creatures can mimic their surroundings’ spectral and textural information by controlling chromatophores and iridophores found in their skin cells (Mäthger, 2009). This becomes more impressive since cephalopod eyes contain a single photoreceptor (Mäthger, 2009). Cephalopod eyes encompass a single rhodopsin type which absorbs light wavelengths up to 492 nm, meaning a cephalopod should only detect blue and achromatic light (Brown, 1958). Nevertheless, these technically “color-blind” organisms continue to mimic the color of their background. Perhaps cephalopods do not distinguish colors like vertebrates, but rather through chromatic aberration (Stubbs & Stubbs, 2016). Chromatic aberration is the process of focusing color by moving the lens closer or farther from the pupil. This is how cameras focus an image, by correcting the lens distance to get the highest quality photo. The proposed theory indicated that cephalopods distinguish color through chromatic aberration to account for only one photoreceptor. Chromatic aberration would be complimentary in low-light settings where cephalopods reside (Stubbs & Stubbs, 2016). Cephalopod vision could also be beneficial in determining...

...Monster of the Sea period 4 Alex Rosales Do you ever wonder what may lay beneath the ocean, where myth and reality come to life? What is the giant squid aka; “THE KRAKEN” as told in tall tales. In ancient myth, sailors told of giant squid attacking the boats. Now movies make them come to reality more feared and scary. Finally a group of scientist called the “squid squad” are looking for the giant creature aka “Kraken” in the big blue ocean. In the beginning ancient sailors told tales of there ships being attacked by a giant squid. They said that some squids would be larger than whales, towering over there ships. Sailors also told tales of the giant squid being stronger than...

...Introduction There are many ways to classify marine organisms. Though there is many ways, there are seven main ways; Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species. The Firefly Squid, or Watasenia Scintillans is classified as such; Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Mollusca, Class: Cephalopoda, Order: Teuthida, Family: Enoploteuthidae, Genus: Watasenia, Species: Scintillans (https://en.wikipedia.org). The kingdom Animalia refers to the organism being an animal; multicellular, motile (meaning it is able to move on its own and impulsively at some point in its life), and being eukaryotic (https://en.wikipedia.org). The Phylum Mollusca is home to most of the familiar spineless species we know, or invertebrates. This consists of clams, slugs,...

...body length includes its head, body, feeding tentacles, and arms. The Giant Squid is considered to be the largest animal in a few areas: it is the largest known invertebrate, mollusk, and Cephalopod (Vaughan). The largest Giant Squid that has been found was around 43 feet long and weighed around a ton, and the females appear to be around ten feet longer than males, some scientists believe that that is because there are eight different species of giant squid (“Giant Squid”; Roper). Giant Squid not only use their blood to carry oxygen, but they can also contract and expand the two gills on their mantle cavity to breathe. The squid can also be known for not only their size, but for their dark sepia colored ink, having no...

...Relationship between the Hawaiian bobtail squid Euprymna scolopes and the bioluminescent bacteria Aliivibrio fischeri Introduction Many organisms on Earth maintain a mutualistic symbiotic relationship, where they live and even benefit from one another. A mutual assistance and association with a particular type of bacteria is required in many animals (Nardon, 1991). Many studies performed with gnotobiotic animals have disclosed that a host fails to grow and develop without the essential nutrients provided by their symbionts, and also that the bacteria takes part in the maturation of the organism in which they are associated with (Gordon, 1971). Recent studies show that light organ relationship between the Hawaiian bobtails squid Euprymna scolopes...

...My favorite activity when it comes to science is dissecting. As an eighth grader, I have already dissected a squid and a cow eye. Science is one of my favorite subjects because I always learn something new. Science plays a large role in my family because my mom, aunts, and uncles are all scientists. My favorite activity when it comes to science is dissecting. As an eighth grader, I have already dissected a squid and a cow eye. I want to learn more through science. I hope to advance toward more advanced science in the future During a school field trip in seventh grade, I dissected a squid with my class. We were paired up with a partner and received a slimy squid. As I began to examine my squid, most of the girls were disgusted and made “Eww!”...

...Animal Diversity Part I Introduction One of the primary goals of the second half of Biol 106 is to understand evolutionary relationships among animals and to gain an appreciation for the diversity of animal form and function. The huge diversity of animals requires us to divide our survey of different animals into a number of labs. Because of time limitations, we will consider only the major groups of animals, but your textbook can provide information about other groups represented by few or little known species. The study of animal phylogeny is an important and ongoing scientific investigation. Because there are differing hypotheses regarding the evolutionary relationships between animals, we will use a simplified phylogeny (Figure 1) to help us organize and understand the enormous diversity among animals. It is helpful to group animals according to certain unifying characteristics. The largest grouping of animals is the phylum (plural phyla). As you have learned in lecture, there are a few simple questions one can ask about animals to put them into different phyla. The first question is, “What type of symmetry does the animal exhibit?” Animals can be asymmetrical, that is, possessing no organized body plan. Only the Sponges fall into this category. Animals can also be radially symmetrical, where the body is arranged around a central point at all stages of life. Many in the phylum Cnidaria (pronounced “knee dare ya”) are radially symmetrical. All other animals are bilaterally...

...The activities we got to do there was snorkeling, kayaking, the vertebrate/invertebrate lab, The Trust walk, The Natural History Hike, The Squid Dissection, The Fish Lab, and The Bird Lab. What I’d like to point out, even though they weren’t my favorites, were the vert/invert lab and the squid dissection. During vert/invert, you get to pet sharks, stingrays, and other cool ocean creatures. During the squid dissection you get to write with squid ink that actually came from inside the squid! Before I get to my personal favorite, I’d like to talk about the Trust Walk. I absolutely loved the trust walk. I liked the idea of it, and even though I’m not allowed to share details with you, I know you guys will love it as well. My favorite activity was kayaking. I loved kayaking because we got to be active while in the water! Kayaking wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be and the oars are actually quite...

..."The Floral Apron", talks about the difference between two generations that have grown apart. Marilyn Chin had wrote about a women cooking an old dish that the new generation doesn't know about. The second paragraph was about the women who is cooking some squids for a meal. The process was described as "she wiped her hand on the apron, pierced the blade into the first. There was no resistance, no blood, only cartilage, soft as a child's nose. A last iota of ink made us wince." The newer generation does not know what she was doing and was a little shock about the brutality of the process. They did not understand that she was just cooking and thought that it was weird for her to be cutting the squid up into pieces. The last paragraph describes...
