Standards for school leaders

As our nation’s educational system attempts to reestablish its prominence on the world

stage; it has experience significant changes which are rooted in two points of view, from which “educators and policy makers have launched many helpful initiatives designed to redefine the roles of formal school leaders.” (I.S.L.L.C., 1996, p.250). This article highlights the progress made by the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) to draft common standards for school leaders. It also discusses societies’ role in developing a better understanding of the challenges faced by the ISLLC team—an overview of its activities, processes used to develop the standards, and some of the issues at the center of the process.

Redesigning Leadership

One of the major issues the consortium experienced early on was how to frame some of the issues surrounding the establishment of the new leadership standards. They decided to draft a leadership foundation that was based on those they saw in productive schools, or those that had experienced some successful outcomes; to do this, they conducted analyses of some of the emerging trends in education with the hopes of distinguishing standards that work from those that don’t—a monumental undertaking when so much can be lost in the interpretation of the data. In addition to these challenges, the consortium was faced with developing standards that not only supported these new perspectives, but did so in a way that was measureable and that could be duplicated on a larger scale.
