It invites readings via Lacanian psychoanalysis, Platonic notions of the cave and the disparity between the two strata of perception and also as a “New Age” (Pisters, 2003: 11) quasi-religious evocation of the second coming. However, here I would like to place the film’s visual sense and diegesis into a context of postmodern philosophy; drawing inferences and theoretical connections between the film and the work of Jean Baudrillard, Walter Benjamin and the neo-Marxists of the Frankfurt School, most notably Adorno and Horkheimer in Dialectic of Enlightenment (1979). The importance of postmodern philosophy and cyber culture to the visual sense of The Matrix is declared from its very opening titles. Random strings of green neon data are scrolled against a black background imbuing the viewer with a sense of the virtual and the cybernetic and this is concretised and given definite focus later on as Neo (Keanu Reeves) hides the two thousand dollars given to him by Anthony in a copy of Simulacra and Simulation by Baudrillard. This reference however is more than a mere visual joke it is a signifier for a number of the film’s sub-textual tropes and motifs. It was understandable after the success it had at the box office, and its success among viewers, which was not only local but global also. The structure of the journey of the hero, Neo, is nothing new. In fact, it starts and it ends like all the other journeys that preceded it, with the advantage of being rich in thought-provoking themes in comparison to the other movies of the genre. In order to help in the development of those themes, the Wachovski brothers use a lot of allusions, references from religions, myths, philosophy, literature, without changing the pattern of their hero’s journey which is clearly the same as the one represented in Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey. ...our team got off to a rocky start, our inability to pick a subject choice I believe inhibited and reduced our research time. However, once we started with some real direct communication and the team members (including myself) were able to contribute effectively, our opinions and ideas started to flow. Creating the google doc and having a structured matrix made communication and providing information easier. The content of our subject choice did change 2-3 times during this process, but I think that this enabled us to think as a team and work to everyone’s strengths. It was using the google drive and the document matrix where we were able to establish which team member would undertake what communication style sub-topic and which themes were most suitable to utilise across each sub-topic. Using the Wiki, emails and Google Docs made communication easier as 1 of our team members lives in a different country and time zone. We were able to bandy suggestions back and forth through these methods and the delay in time didn’t make much of an impact. With regards to the Prezi itself, Megan chose to design and manipulate the Prezi structure and layout. Being that Megan had, had previous experience with Prezi, the rest of the team were happy with this choice.
