In this interview, Kathy Kelly elaborates on how student loans affect college students. She describes the different types of loans that students can acquire and how the student loan process can be very complex in some ways. Kelly addresses the high expectations college students have when coming out of school and expecting a lifestyle like their parents. Kelly states, "Students think they should be able to afford as much as their parents can afford, but salaries haven't grown in the last few years and therefore students aren't earning as much as their expenses." However, each individual student is different in what they are trying to accomplish. Some of the students that are struggling to pay off their loans did not complete their Bachelor's

Financial Literacy for El Paso

...proposed personal high school finance class is to help high school students develop the ability to use knowledge and skills to manage financial resources effectively throughout their lifetime. In the past, high school students have been required to take an economics class which helped them get a basic understanding of the world of economics in today's world. We are now seeking to have a finance class which will not only help students get a basic understanding of finance but help students use the skills they develop to  help them manage their personal finances responsibly. FLEP has partnered up with GECU, a local financial institution, to make this class possible. The class will teach students the basics of finance as well as teach students how to spend, invest, and save money effectively. The class will include setting up savings and checking accounts with GECU for the students and provide them with special support with their accounts. Our proposal requests that the FLEP personal high school finance class be a required course in the high school diploma curriculum. Facebookcase

...Long-Term Financing at Facebook[1] Facebook is the social networking website that opened in 2004 as a forum for university students, and that has exploded into a full-service social networking site open to all interested participants by the end of 2006. Facebook competes as a social network with the site, MySpace, which itself only began operating in 2002. The main audience for Facebook remains college students, in the age 18-24 range, though by early 2007 more than half of Facebook’s 24 million active users were outside of college age. Facebook’s stated intent is to provide a forum for “real” people (not avatars) to share information about each other, without connection to job searching or gaming or other possible goals. From its beginning as a connection vehicle for university students, Facebook has maintained this focus, although allowing for expansion to any potential users rather than limiting access to those in a college or university. According to Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, “People communicate most naturally and effectively with their friends and the people around them. What we figured is that if we could model what those connections were, [we could] provide that information to a set of applications through which people want to share information, photos or videos or events.” [from an interview with Time magazine, July 2007. http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1644040,00.html?xid=rss-business&iid=sphere-inline-sidebar] ...
