...CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION Background to the Study Education is the key that unlocks the door to development. Ghana as a developing country has never relented in her efforts to draw up educational programmes to meet the changing demands, needs and aspirations of her citizens as well as the nation as a whole since independence in 1957. The first initiative in education taken by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was the Associated Development Plan that aimed at ensuring that every child of school going age (i.e. 6 years) receives fee free basic education. Education was therefore seen as a process of helping an individual to develop his abilities, interests potentialities and talents to the optimum so as to be useful to himself or herself and the nation as a whole. As the individuals develop fully their cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills and contribute meaningfully towards the development of the nation, then it can be confirmed that the assertion is true. In September 1987, the Peoples’ National Defence Congress (PNDC) government implemented the New Educational Reforms Programme with the ultimate aim of eradicating the defects in the old educational system. The main objectives of the Reform among other things include: 1. To reduce the period of basic education to 9 years (primary 6 JHS – 3 year). 2. To raise the quality of basic education to give all children some secondary education. 3. To encourage practical programmes which lead to the acquisition of skills for...

...Leadership in Educational Institutions Leadership responsibilities for heads of educational institutions play a key role in addressing the problems that face these institutions. The learning process in most high schools fails to deliver the expected results due to poor leadership. Today, many educational institutions seek to implement the evaluation process for public school principals based not only on leadership skills, but responsibilities, accountability, and professionalism (Szczesiul and Huizenga 166). The evaluation system seeks to address increasing issues of high school dropout rates, discipline, academic performance, and development of interpersonal skills among students. Appropriate leadership should be based on student growth and development, unlike earlier systems that rated students based on their academic performances. High school principals need to have the right skills required to address emerging issues such as the curriculum and teacher-student relationship evaluations (Katterfeld 344). Strategic high school leaders understand the needs of the students, teachers, and the non-teaching staff. The evaluation process seeks to determine whether high school principals adopt strategic measures to engage in professional dialogs with the teachers concerning teaching and learning process that occurs in classrooms. Transformational leadership remains critical due to changes in technology, globalization, and diversification, which play a crucial role in the success...

... Problem Definition: * The students selection Criteria is not always show the right candidate to register into the college. Justification of the problem Definition: * The way of choosing the Students to register into the college it may not select some good students of the high school regardless of their grades and that because of the SAT score and its big weight (40% of the total Score) in the selection Criteria and that is a big weight and cause a great pressure on the students and many students suffer from the test anxiety , and also the results many not reflect on what the students truly knows , also the students can improve their scores by between 40 to 150 points by taking a test coaching course by 600 $ or 700$ which effect on choosing the students that can pay the course cost than they are good enough in their high school List of alternatives course of actions: * Decreasing the weight of SAT Score and increase the weight of high school weight * Add the intelligence test to the College Selection criteria with a weight cutting from SAT Weight * Give more time to evaluate the whole admission process and Redesign the process to be more simple and really give the right indicators to select the good students Evaluate the alternatives: * Add the intelligence test to the college selection criteria as it used by a big corporations to screen job applicants * Positives : * we should use it in the college selection criteria as one of the college’s...

...DRESS CODES IN SCHOOLS Dress code is mandatory in all of Florida schools, but it is isn't in Pennsylvania or other states. Many students despise the dress code and think it is pointless. How does the dress code enhance our learning? It doesn't, if anything it creates a distraction as students are constantly wondering if they are wearing the "right shade" of a specific color and if they are going to be "flagged" for the wrong shade. I feel that if we were not made to dress a specific way or wear specific colors, we would be more comfortable, therefore allowing us to better concentrate on our classwork, instead of worrying about if we are wearing the right type of clothing or the right color of clothing. Also, not having a dress code would provide the students with a better selection of clothing as well as provide their parents with more options as far as price and selection of the clothing. This also allows for the student to have the ability to re-wear the clothing and not force the parents to provide 2 seperate wardrobes for their children, which does create a greater expense for the family, and with a family that has more than 1 school aged child, this creates a very expensive burden for the parents, not to mention, sometimes making finding specific colors and styles of clothing very hard and very time consuming. With no dress code, you would find students more relaxed and focused on the tasks at hand and the selection and variety of clothing would greatly be increased...

...SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM EFFICIENCY 2 Abstract This action research was designed to increase the efficiency of a community college scholarship program. The research developed in response to a desire to increase numbers of scholarship applications from students and to streamline the selection and financial reconciliation processes at the research site. The literature search revealed these aims to be common among community college scholarship programs nationwide. Data was gathered through surveys, interviews, and observations. Data analysis suggests that passive information on the part of colleges, lack of student confidence in qualifications, and lack of student awareness of the differences in scholarship criteria are significant contributing factors leading to low rates of application. Data related to recipient selection processes show that committee training, the use of multiple reviewers, and the use of consistently-applied scoring rubrics increase selection efficiency. Results suggest further research possibilities to determine the extent to which various scholarship marketing strategies, and the manner in which individual scholarship criteria are presented, influence application rates. Further research is suggested to determine the factors influencing student confidence and motivation related to scholarship application. ...impacted me the most was allowing students to discuss the diversity issues and not just ignore them; the topic for week five was Discussing Difficult Topics. While attending undergraduate school, I was taught to not address diversity issues unless the student/child brings up the issue in order not to disrespect diverse backgrounds. The first step in breaking down cultural barriers is to allow students to ask questions about the issues which concern them. This lesson also alerted me that when having a conversation in the classroom dealing with diversity and cultural backgrounds, there needs to be structure and rules about the expectations during the discussion. Dilg (2003) explained that ignoring sensitive topics bring about misunderstandings and denies guidance in dealing with certain subjects. Conversations across the classroom allow students to interact with the many different backgrounds of their classmates and to understand the cultural differences, just by dialogue. Ignoring a problem or situation does not help anyone and in order for students to become 21st Century Learners and be globally competitive after school, educators must address all issues head on, no matter how hard the subject. The other concept which was an eye opener, was allowing students to choose their own reading selection. Students are in charge of reading materials and selections, which in turn could enhance their learning capability. Assigning all students’ the same reading...
