A Study on the Performance and Study Habits Employed in Learning English

...Chapter 1 The Problem and its Background Introduction According to Maraya (2013), excellent academic performance is an ultimate goal of study for every student because it provides the half way of success in the future. Students need to know how they can earn the achievement in academic performance. As being students, the perception on study habits is necessary. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to find out students’ perception on their study habits and to evaluate whether study habits of Grade 5 and Grade 6 students in SMA has positive relationship with their academic performance in Learning English. Measures of study behaviors, also called study skills, strategies, or techniques, can serve as diagnostic tools to help instructors identify students in need of additional help and can also provide a better awareness of a student’s strengths and weaknesses and, correspondingly, ways to optimize his or her learning. Study behaviors can be broadly defined as behaviors functioning to acquire, organize, synthesize, evaluate, remember, and use information (Crede & Kuncel, 2008; Gettinger & Seibert, 2002). Such behaviors include time management; goal setting; selecting what, how, and where to study; taking good notes; reading; and self-testing. Researchers have divided the many specific study behaviors into four main categories: repetition-based (e.g., flashcards), cognitive-based (e.g., studying with a friend), procedural (e.g., time management), and metacognitive...

Makayla Case Study In English

...My advice for Makayla Makayla’s story happens to me sometimes. I understand the feeling of staring at a new process or test and not being able to translate it into what I am familiar with. I would recommend that she tap into her precision when this starts. It will help her become hungry for answers and open to moving out of the frozen state to a mind that can think past the isolated agenda or task. I would recommend that she write down questions that lead her to feeling stuck. She should be able to do this well because she will be using her sequence by putting a list together in order. Then she can tackle the questions or concerns she wrote down one by one. This in turn will let her open to a new idea as a potential solution because she will have lead herself to the understanding and will trust it more. My advice for John My suggestion for John would be to focus on the big picture by using his confluence and technical patterns as he revises a first draft or finishes typing up an email or letter. This can help him simplify his main points and make easy for anyone to read and get the message. I would suggest that he use his sequence to make edits. This is a use first pattern for him as well. Once he pulls out his main idea and explanations with confluence and technical reasoning, he can condense it while writing the revision in a logical and clean format that sequence is naturally keen to. My advice for Paul I find myself in Paul’s shoes in a lot of situations. ...

Nichols decision, English Language Learners are entitled to receive equal access or opportunity for education, which their local school districts must provide. ...

A Study on Semantic Features of Purposive Adjuncts in English and Vietnamese

...A STUDY ON SEMANTIC FEATURES OF PURPOSIVE ADJUNCTS IN ENGLISH AND VIETNAMESE Le Thi Bich Hanh University of Foreign Languages, The University of Danang Email: lebichhanh_dn@yahoo.com ABSTRACT Having a good guide to translate appropriately English purposive adjuncts (PAs) into Vietnamese and vice versa has become monumentally necessary. So, in this study, we would like to compare and contrast English and Vietnamese PAs in terms of their semantic features in meaningful interactional situations in the strong belief that using appropriate PAs, writers and speakers can reduce the negative meanings of their sentences and increase the acceptability of the readers and hearers in communication. In terms of theory, the study focuses on identifying the similarities and differences in the uses of adjuncts to express purposes and hence finding the cultural factors affecting those choices. In practice, the study hopes to provide some implications in language teaching and learning as well as translating. The practical information in the research can raise language users’ awareness of the subtle differences between the uses of PAs in both languages so that they can fulfill their communicative purpose in real life. Key words: purposive adjuncts; purposive subordinators; semantic features; compare; implication * Introduction Most languages in the world have particular linguistic devices for expressing purposes implicitly and explicitly. Purposive adjuncts (PAs) are some of those...

The English Language in Turkey – a Case Study of Linguistic Imperialism

...Course: Globalization and Cultural Studies Mr. Looi van Kessel, M.A. The English language in Turkey – A case study of linguistic imperialism English is considered to be the world’s lingua franca. It is the most extended language in all kinds of international interactions, including trade, culture, and academia. This is considered to be a factual statement and not a normative one. Certain scholars have considered the rise of English as a positive process in normative terms, while others have critiqued it as a form of imperialism. However, both sides of the argument agree on the principle that English is indeed the global language (Lin and Martin 116). The effects of English linguistic imperialism can be found in a plethora of countries, but they are mostly evident in countries that adopt official language policies to encourage the use of English in order to position themselves closer to the Western world. That is the case of Turkey which has favored English teaching and usage since the late 19th century (Doğançay-Aktuna and Kiziltepe 254-257). Furthermore, this official language policy and its consequences are most noticeable in academia, an environment where English has become an essential tool for participating in the international scientific community. This essay will discuss the case of Turkey as a country that has been directly impacted by English linguistic imperialism, resulting in a struggle between the economic benefits of expanding English usage, and the existence of a...

...Practice AP Language Essay Prompt Wilson's purpose in his two passages, "the people first critic stereotypes the environmentalist", and "the environmentalist stereotypes the people first critics", is to illustrate and show the immaturity displayed in the way the environmentalists gives their debates in regards to the others opinions and positions. The first thing he does in each of the passages is he gives their opinions of each other in a way that is very informal and stereotypical. And throughout these two writings, he continues to argue that the environmentalists are really more concerned with each other and they are with the natural environment that they "play" to save and preserve. The rhetorical strategy known as assertion is the starting point of an argument that can be supported with specific details. This is the strategy that Wilson used in his passages to satirize the language of two groups that hold opposing attitudes about environmentalism. In his writing, he questions the true motives of conservationists by pointing out that as they pass more laws and regulations on pollution and the endangered species of nature, they seem to be more for their own interests, instead of those of the environment. From this, Wilson draws the conclusion that by constantly passing new laws and regulations regarding the environment, conservationists are hiding their selfish interests by using their actions as a cover-up. Wilson's emphasis on the false motives of conservationists leads...

Personal Statement - English Literature and Creative Writing

...Personal Statement I am drawn to study English Literature and Creative writing because I am passionate about and committed to reading and writing. I feel that a structured programme of study is imperative for me to achieve my long-term goal of establishing a successful and varied career as a writer. I know that the path I have chosen will often be difficult to walk but I have already taken a step toward its end by starting an Access course. Throughout my short time on the Access course I have gained confidence in my speaking skills. For example, during a recent discussion on gender and relationships in a graded English discussion I raised a point that the teacher had not thought of and was praised for doing so - this taught me that by pushing myself beyond my comfort zone by sharing my ideas and opinions I will be able to achieve my goals. I know that with the skills taught on the Access course I will be able to achieve my goal of studying and completing a degree in English Literature and Creative Writing. The Access course has taught me the importance of self-reflection and criticism through keeping a reflective log which documents my progress, obstacles and goals. I have learnt that I am able to be objective when analysing my own work and performance; this skill has helped me to realise that in order to improve my work I have to be critical of myself and be able to accept criticism from others, I feel that this skill will prepare me for the competitive world of writing...

Studying English Literature

...When we dip into the rich variety of novels, poems, and plays which constitute English Literature we are reading works which have lasted for generations, or centuries, and they have lasted because they are good. These works say something worth saying, and say it with artistry strong enough to survive while lesser works drop into obscurity. Literature is part of our cultural heritage which is freely available to everyone, and which can enrich our lives in all kinds of ways. Once we have broken the barriers that make studying literature seem daunting, we find that literary works can be entertaining, beautiful, funny, or tragic. They can convey profundity of thought, richness of emotion, and insight into character. They take us beyond our limited experience of life to show us the lives of other people at other times. They stir us intellectually and emotionally, and deepen our understanding of our history, our society, and our own individual lives. In great writing from the past we find the England of our ancestors, and we not only see the country and the people as they were, but we also soak up the climate of the times through the language itself, its vocabulary, grammar, and tone. We would only have to consider the writing of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Boswell, Dickens, and Samuel Beckett side by side to see how the way writers use language embodies the cultural atmosphere of their time. Literature can also give us glimpses of much earlier ages. Glimpses of Celtic Ireland in...
