To understand how large the health issue is, we have to understand what obesity is. Obesity is a condition where someone has so much body fat that it might damage their health. We define this amount of body fat by at least 20% or higher according to http://www.medicalnewstoday.com. According to http://www.businessinsider.com USA actually has some of the highest obesity rates in the world, and in this text I am going to look at some of the reasons why. (http://talkpoverty.org/basics/) This is one of the biggest causes to obesity. Poor people have a lot less access to healthy and nutritious food. Obesity in America

...Obesity in America Our nation’s obesity problem has become an extremely pronounced problem in our country. We were once known as a healthy country that knew the meaning of the word moderation, but that has quickly took a turn for the worst and is now almost obsolete. We always need to “supersize it” or get the biggest thing available on the menu. One of the largest contributors and causes to this ongoing epidemic is the fast food industry. With the low-cost easy to get foods many people would rather purchase that than making a quality meal at home. With these low cost fast food meals the quality directly suffers and you left with the sub par ingredients that you are putting into your body. These ingredients make your health suffer at incredible levels, which directly causes obesity. For example McDonald’s uses an ingredient (dimethylpolysiloxane) in the making of their Chicken McNuggets. This ingredient is the same one used in making silicone cosmetic products and also silly putty! (1) Americans are choosing to ingest these foods that puts their health at risk. As you know moderation is not something that Americans are necessarily good at. So when they go out to these fast food restaurants they usually order the largest meal they can, and even “supersize it” if the option is available. These fast food enterprises have realized that too and have started catering towards this “larger” demographic. In the past sixty years the soft drink portion has grown by more than six times...

Obesity Epidemic

...Obesity Epidemic Everywhere people turn weight loss is an issue. There are countless television commercials or advertisements speaking of ways to lose weight. The question is why have Americans become obsessed with weight loss? The answer lies in the fact America has become an obese country. According to an article published by Robert Pool, “Obesity and overweight now affect more than 50 percent of adult Americans.”[1] This is a staggering number. Everywhere people look or turn their see an overweight individual. Obesity has become an acceptable norm in today’s society. Canadian doctor’s Lau, Morrison, Shamara, and Ur concluded that “before the 20th century obesity was rare.”[2] Americans have become so obese that in “1997 the WHO recognized obesity as a global epidemic.[3] Because the number of cases of obesity are on the rise, obesity and weight loss have become a billion dollar industry. Obesity is an abnormal accumulation of body fat, usually 20% or more over an individual’s ideal body weight. Twenty to 40% percent over ideal weight is said to be mildly obese; 40-100% over ideal weight is said to be moderately obese; and over 100% ideal weight is said to be severely, or morbidly obese. Approximately 300,000 deaths a year are attributed to obesity. Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States. The money spent on obesity has increased in the last several years. Obesity leads to many different medical and physical problems. High...

Prevention - the New Health Focus

...though there have been significant inroads, their voice has largely gone unheeded. Currently, as America steps into the unknown territory of nationwide health reform, corporate plans to encourage their employees toward better health through incentive programs, increased government subsidies and resources, and involvement by non-profits to reward healthy practices will help shift the paradigm from treatment to prevention. This shift from a disempowered place to a positive focus offers not only solutions to unhealthy trends in America, but also injects a 'can do' attitude into a beleaguered nation. A blog from The Economist in 2013 presents the problem of declining health in America in a succinctly stark light. They indicate that even though our "life expectancy rose from 75.2 years in 1990 to 78.2 years in 2010, this seemingly good news actually masks two problems. First, though women live longer than men, their life expectancy is rising more slowly. Secondly, both sexes have a lower life expectancy than their peers in other rich countries, a gulf that has widened since the 1980s." Of course, life expectancy does not necessarily equate to quality of life, and many Americans are simply living longer in poor health. "Heart disease remains the top cause of premature death, followed by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer” (The Economist, 2013). Obesity, or a high body mass index (BMI), is second only to smoking as a cause of disease. Even though...

...anyone you ask, the answer to this question is yes and it has happened to a Valerie Moore of Holmes County, Mississippi. Valerie unfortunately lives in one of Mississippi’s poorest areas. Valerie weighs 241 lbs. and contributes her weight gain to eating unhealthy foods. Obesity is a major public health problem in the U.S. While all segments of population are affected, low-income and food insecure people are more vulnerable due to risks associated with poverty. Obesity

...Obesity an American Epidemic HCS/552 Karen L. Chambers University of Phoenix Monday June 4, 2012 Professor James Hamilton Obesity an American Epidemic Numerous research studies have confirmed that poor eating habits, lack of exercise and a sedentary lifestyle are the prime contributors to obesity in the US. Because of on the go life styles, fast food consumption and microwave meals, people have sacrificed their health. Instead of eating pure, wholesome foods, many people opt to eat a diet of packaged, processed and refined foods. Obesity is a condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to such levels that a person’s health can be negatively affected. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have ranked obesity as the number one health threat in America, with an estimated 400,000 deaths annually. (Smoking causes an estimated 440,000 deaths annually) Being simply overweight is not as dangerous as being obese. An overweight person can easily lose a few pounds by monitored diets and exercise, and usually regains a healthy body and mind. Obese people cannot accomplish this as easily, no matter how much effort is exerted. Studies conducted by researchers at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, examined three large, nationally representative surveys on food consumption conducted from 1987 to 1998. The survey collected data on what more than 63,000 people said that they ate. Salty snacks (crackers, chips, pretzels) increased from 1 ounce to...

Healthy Food

...Dear residents of Lebanon County, Ever since I have been living on my own, I have come across a few things that I would like to change in this County. This problem most likely affects all of us who live here and even go beyond our close knit community. The problem has to do with our diet and how it is controlled by the government. More specifically, the government claims that they are trying to create a healthier America but really what have they done to accomplish this? They created programs such as MyPyramid and MyPlate, which are useful but without the complimenting foods, you can almost deem them useless. The point in which I am making accuses the government of making our diet into a business. The government suggests that we eat healthy and provide us with guides such as MyPlate, only for us to find that the foods that are most recommended also carry the highest price tag. This causes me to believe that the government may not have our health as their main priority. I find myself thinking this every time I make a trip to the grocery store. I am proposing that, we the residents of Lebanon County raise awareness of this to our local government authorities and from there it will become recognized nationwide. Solutions to this problem may include tax breaks for producers of healthy goods as well as tax breaks for those who are self-sufficient, people who live off the land so to speak, as well as other monetary incentives to promote a healthy diet. Currently, the main problem...
