...“Consider the Lobster” Summary 08/26/2013 David Foster Wallace’s essay “Consider the Lobster” examines the pain that Lobsters feel when they are being boiled alive to be consumed by Humans. He uses the lobster as an example to expand his examination, bringing out the relationship between humans and the animals that we consume. Wallace starts of his essay by mentioning the Maine Lobster Festival and its huge crowd of over 80,000 people that consume over 25,000 pounds of lobster during the 5 days that the festival lasts. He starts off the essay with admiration in his tone as he describes the Maine Lobster Festival to his readers. After he’s done praising the festival, Wallace reveals that his main intention of writing the essay was to question if killing animals is morally acceptable. He explains that Lobsters have nociceptors, invertebrate versions of the prostaglandins and major neurotransmitters that enable human beings to record pain. Lobsters, however, do not appear to be able to absorb natural opioids like endorphins and enkephalins which are what advanced nervous systems use to deal with pain. Wallace examines this information about lobsters and recognizes that lobster either suffer more than a human would because they can’t control pain as well as humans can or they simply can’t comprehend the idea of pain. ...The relationship between Miles and Snow's strategic types and human resource practices. Abstract: Purpose: This study explores the relationship between organizational strategy and human resources practices, specifically as they relate to the Miles and Snow typology of strategic choices (1978). Design/methodology/approach: Using self-classification, employees assessed their firm's strategy using descriptions characterizing the Defender, Analyzer, Prospector and Reactor strategies developed by Snow and Hrebiniak (1980). Findings: This paper presents empirical evidence supporting the notion that different types of human resources practices more closely complement the unique strategic choices. Specifically there is a significant relationship for the use of the more modern types of human resources practices in the Prospector organizations. For Defender organizations, where more traditional human resource practices were expected to be appropriate, the results were not significant. It does appear that Defender organizations use the traditional HR practices more extensively than Prospector organizations. It appears that regardless of their chosen strategy, most companies still make at least limited use of the traditional HR practices. Research limitations/implications: Further research is needed to confirm and validate these findings with a larger sample which could include a broader mix of US companies as well as global respondents. Within the past few years, numerous examples of data such as Social Security, bank account, credit card, and driver’s license numbers, as well as medical and student records have been compromised. A major reason for the increased awareness of these security breaches is a California law that requires notice of security breaches to the affected individuals. This law, implemented in July 2003, was the first of its kind in the nation. State data security breach notification laws require companies and other entities that have lost data to notify affected consumers. As of January 2007, 35 states have enacted legislation requiring companies or state agencies to disclose security breaches involving personal information. Congress is considering legislation to address personal data security breaches, following a series of high-profile data security breaches at major financial services firms, data brokers (including ChoicePoint and LexisNexis), and universities. In the past three years, multiple measures have been introduced, but to date, none have been enacted. This report will be updated regularly. Scholarly interest in social enterprise (SE) has progressed beyond the early focus on definitions and context to investigate their management and performance. From a review of the SE literature, the authors identify hybridity, the pursuit of the dual mission of financial sustainability and social purpose, as the defining characteristic of SEs.They assess the impact of hybridity on the management of the SE mission, financial resource acquisition and human resource mobilization, and present a framework for understanding the tensions and trade-offs resulting from hybridity.
