Summary: Sharecropping

When discussing the current economic state with friends, you are not typically discussing your love life, are you? Why would you? Because, many economists argue that the economy shapes our marriage patterns as well as our decision to marry.

Two concepts that support the correlation between the economy and marriage are the Sharecropping era and the start of the Industrial Society. Throughout the sharecropping economy, household wealth was not only measured by only by finances but also by harvest and land. For an example; if two families that are land and harvest wealthy merge through marriage it is beneficial to all. However, many fathers in that time period discouraged marriage with young man who is unable to produce wages from land or harvest. Alternatively, the young couple with no assets, moved onto farms who were struggling and that’s the beginning of the sharecropping era. During this period many household were comprised of two or more components of a conjugal family. …show more content…
Stephanie Countz refers to this as consolidation of power. When consolidating powers; families that normally would be classified as lower class were able to somewhat re-class themselves by marriage. Through marriage, came children. In the sharecropping economy, children were as source of labor, and the more labor the more labor one could produce the higher in society one’s family could be viewed. So out of the need of cheap or free labor, many couples opted to have large families in addition to

Landbank

...HISTORY August 8, 1963 - Land Bank was established as part of the Agricultural Land Reform Code In 1965 - Land Bank's by-laws were approved and its first board of trustees was formed, with the Secretary of Finance as chairman. October 21, 1972 - Presidential Decree No. 27, signed by former President Ferdinand Marcos, emancipated all tenant farmers working on private agricultural lands devoted to rice and corn, whether working on a landed estate or not. The system was implemented through a system of sharecropping and/or lease-tenancy. Land bank was tasked to collect 15-year land amortizations from beneficiaries at the cost of the value of the land plus six percent interest per annum. 1973 - LANDBANK was in financial distress. It lacked the resources and the capital needed to implement the land reform programs and lacked the structure to implement the programs efficiently. July 21, 1973 - Marcos signed Presidential Decree No. 251 which revitalized the bank. The decree granted LANDBANK a universal banking license with a social mission to spur countryside development. The decree expanded Land bank's power to include lending for agricultural, industrial, homebuilding and home-financing projects and other productive enterprises, as well as lending to farmers' cooperatives and associations to facilitate production, marketing of crops and acquisition of essential commodities. Land bank was also required by the decree to provide timely and adequate support in all phases involved...

Slavery: A Short Story

...“Shick, shick” my landowner’s hoe turning up the soil as my bronze arms burned under the blazing sun. Working on as a sharecropper was no better than being a slave after a few years of harvest the landowners have you so far in debt you have to give them 100% of the crop, little to no pay and then you are a slave. I hadn’t let that happen to my wife, daughter, and I, not yet. Everyday I was up at six and didn’t return home until nine except for supper. The sun slowly had begun to set and I had slowly begun to finish my work. My daughter’s head bobbed up and down as she picked crop and placed it in her wicker basket, my wife could barely be seen in the rows of wheat, the scythe in her hand moved swiftly, like me she worked like a bull trying to get our family up north. It was hard enough living in Virginia in 1926, with the Jim Crow laws, but the constant fear of being lynched by the Ku Klux Klan, was unbearable. After the sun had set we began our return to our three room, unheated cabin. “We gon’ be able to pay da’ whole we owe to da’ landowner dis’ season.” My wife noted as we walked back. “Mm Huh,” I replied, “we may even have ‘nough ta make a profit.” “It be heaven if we da have ‘nough to buy Ella a present fo’ her birthday o’ Christmas.” “Yeah,” I said ending the conversation. Delicious scents wafted through our house from the rusty old pots my wife had been roasting food in, since early this afternoon when we had returned to eat lunch. We all propped our tools in one of the...

What Does This Contract Reveal to You About the Nature of Sharecropping? Was This System a Good One for Both the Sharecropper and the Landowner?

...What does this contract reveal to you about the nature of sharecropping? Was this system a good one for both the sharecropper and the landowner?  Explain.  I believe what the contract reveals about the nature of sharecropping is that it was set up to set the “freed” African American for failure and to put them in such debit that they basically became slaves to the landowner once again. The landowner has left a lot of responsibility to the sharecropper obviously I think a good example of this in this contract is that the landowner has agreed to provide the team but the sharecropper has to feed the team Saturday nights, and every other day morning night a day and if he fails to provide the meal he will then owe the landowner 5 cents, which was a lot of money at the time especially for a poor sharecropper. He also has to pay for his half of the manure which the landowner designates as enough of the crops. This system is so beneficial to the landowner but only allows the sharecropper enough to thrive to live. I don’t believe this system was good for both the sharecropper and the landowner. I believe as earlier stated it was one sided to the landowner. The sharecropper had a lot of responsibility while all the landowner did was provided the land and horses for the sharecropper and then reaped all the benefit finically. He got a low cost of labor and once the debit piled up from the landowners harsh expectations basically free labor out of this. This landowner even went as far...

...as an Confederate soldier, and several stereo typical southern references as well as the use of common southern accents.. The use of “N___er” (AFRAKA) is used multiple times in this story. It is used openly and without shame in regard to any person of color referenced in the story. This term is not as acceptable as it used to be, in reference to people of color, the term black is acceptable now in the south even though it doesn’t matter what one’s skin color is, we are in fact equal. “It is probable that n---er is a phonetic spelling of the white southern mispronunciation of nego” The family that is the focus of this story is sharecroppers, Landless laborers who rent land from landowners in return for a portion of their crop. The sharecropping system was developed as a way for landowners to establish a work force after the abolition of slavery in the south. To this day landowners still rent their land to the landless so that both can make a profit. Plantation houses of the classic antebellum style are indicative of the southern society before and after the civil war. The one referenced in the story is described as huge and white such as the antebellum style. It is indicated to be of the plantation by a comment by the father. “Pretty and white ain’t it, that sweat n___er sweat, maybe it ain’t white enough yet to suit him.”.” (Faulkner)” The father was indicated as being in the civil war. The Was Who Was Almost a Man

...The Man Who Was Almost a Man President Abraham Lincoln signed the Proclamation Emancipation. This document gave slaves their freedom. Sharecropping was also called tenant farming. Blacks viewed this as the only opportunity to become self-sufficient. Knowing that slaves had nowhere to go and all they knew was farming or domestic work; through this system, the landowner still exercised a great degree of power, illustrated by the terms of a contract. Some plantation owners took advantage of majority of the black population, because they could not read, write or count. The plantation owners needed them to keep maintaining the fields and crops. The owners would over charge them for equipment, tools, and even rent if they lived on the land. As the most common farming arrangement, former slaves did not receive payment until the crops were harvested and turned into the landowner. In return, they would be paid, but not equally. They were typically given a portion of the crops instead of money. Many times they were told or cohered into signing a contract with the plantation owners saying they must pay back any advances received, cost of tools, and rent. Richard Wright’s short story “A Man Who Was Almost a Man” from the book of Eight Men clearly illustrate the continuous enslavement by means of sharecropping. A young boy named Dave decides the time has come for him to be a “Man”. Therefore, he makes an adult decision to purchase a gun. After purchasing a revolver he makes a series of...

...Consulting Case Memo -- Outline Executive Summary While this section appears first, it should actually be the last thing you write. * The executive summary should be no more than one page. * Executive summaries are not “introductions.” They do not provide background. * Everything discussed in the executive summary should be explained in greater detail in the body of the memo. * If the only thing someone reads is your executive summary, your reader should have a good understanding of the problem, your proposal, the most important cost(s), and the most important benefit(s). Problem Statement Identify the problem in business terms. State clearly why the owner, president, or CEO should care about addressing the problem you’ve identified. Proposed Solution Identify the one most important action the company or organization needs to take to address the problem. Be as specific as possible in describing your solution. Costs of the Proposal Be as inclusive as possible when thinking about costs. Consider things like opportunity costs and the impact of the proposed change on the organization’s culture in addition to the more obvious financial costs. Identify every possible objection to your proposal. Why hasn’t the company already taken this step? The quickest way to have your recommendation rejected is to hear an objection to which you must reply, “I hadn’t thought of that.” Benefits of the Proposal How will your specific proposal address the problem you’ve...
