...Term Paper In No Shame in My Game, Katherine Newman presents a view of inner city poverty radically different from that commonly accepted. The all too prevalent picture we get of the poor today in the media, in the political sphere, and in scholarly studies is of alienated minorities living in big-city ghettos, lacking in values and family structure, criminally inclined, and permanently dependent on government handouts. What Newman reveals, however, as she focuses on the working poor in Harlem, one of the country's most depressed urban areas, is a community of people who are committed to earning a living, struggling to support themselves and their families on minimum wage dead end jobs, and clinging to the dignity of a regular paycheck, regardless how meager it may be. Newman champions poor workers and seeks to reorient the poverty debate. She wants to deemphasize self defeating behaviors like teenage pregnancy, and to stress what she sees as the larger issues, the injustice of low wages and the apathy of more prosperous citizens. He had thought that by leaving his home at 7:00 a.m. he would have been ahead of the heavy commuter traffic into San Antonio’s city center. The explanation for the long queue was announced by the radio traffic service. A large, portable crane, used to set up concrete barriers around road works, had overturned, and inbound and outbound traffic would be at a dead stop for at least an hour. Eric had ended up at Tex-Mark, a computer input-output manufacturer and supplier, through an indirect career route. Brought up in the Hill Country Village district of San Antonio, Eric had graduated from Churchill High School and Baylor University in Waco, Texas with a major in History and a minor in Spanish. His maternal grandmother lived in Tennessee, but was born and grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland and Eric had spent several summers while in high school and at university backpacking around Europe. His facility for languages was impressive and he had an excellent working use of Spanish, French, Italian and German. He could converse in Cantonese, as the result of working in a noodle restaurant during university and had started a tutorial course in Mandarin last fall.
