Steam powered trains developed in Great Britain in the early 1800s, so America decided it was time to hop on the bandwagon. In 1830, Peter Cooper built the first American-built steam locomotive. He called it the Tom Thumb- named after its small size and weight. In August 28, 1830, on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, the Tom Thumb made its first debut. Later on, the Tom Thumb contested in a race with a horse drawn car. The Tom Thumb unfortunately lost the race because of mechanical errors and handed the victory to the horse drawn carriage. This event showed the power and speed a locomotive was capable of.

Research Narrative- Kurt Cobain

...Brittany Peters Instructor Wenrich Eng. 121 7 June 2015 Research Narrative “Okay, so I get to wake up today and have another day he doesn’t.”- Dave Grohl, band member of Nirvana What would music have been like in the 1990s without Kurt Cobain? Or maybe the question to ask is, “What would music be like today if Kurt Cobain was alive?” The grunge movement was brought to life by the front man of the band Nirvana, Kurt Cobain (Kurt and Courtney). He was what most believed to be an iconic man in the 1990s for the music genre known as alternative rock/grunge. Kurt Cobain passed away on April 5th, 1994, in his home, when he was only 27 years old (“April 05”). He recently started a family with his wife Courtney Love, who was also a musician in a band called Hole (Kurt and Courtney). Kurt was in and out of rehabilitation centers for his drug addiction, and soon before his death had, what people considered at the time, an accidental overdose in Rome. The day his corpse was found an electrician reports his findings. The police and fire department arrive. Pictures are taken of the scene, and then handed to detectives to enhance the report of the incident that took place on the street of Lake Washington Boulevard. As news spreads of the musician’s tragedy fans gather at his house and a memorial service is performed in his honor (Kurt and Courtney). I now tell you the story of how and when Kurt Donald Cobain’s body was found. An electrician, Gary Smith, from the company Veca Electric...

Executive Summary INTRODUCTION/ BACKGROUND What is the case about? In July 1994, the president of National Fabricators Inc Mr. Tom Kruger called his bank manager of the confederation Bank of Canada, Mr.Jim Kashmar to ask that the bank continue to extend a temporary line of credit of $ 1,000,000 for a period of sixty days. They needed this extension because there had been some delays in the collection of the company’s holdbacks for that period. After the sixty days they hoped to have collected their holdbacks and other receivables so they would return to their normal line of credit which was $800,00. In the month before however, national fabricators had asked for the same extension in credit as a result of delays in the collection of some payments for locker room installations done. The bank had reluctantly extended the credit on the basis of the confidence in the new president of the company, relations with client and the company’s impact on community. They however stated that, nothing in the application warranted the extension of further credit. As such this new appeal for an extension had to be...

Brainstorming

...What is Brainstorming? Brainstorming is a large or small group activity which encourages children to focus on a topic and contribute to the free flow of ideas. The teacher may begin by posing a question or a problem, or by introducing a topic. Students then express possible answers, relevant words and ideas. Contributions are accepted without criticism or judgement. Initially, some students may be reluctant to speak out in a group setting but brainstorming is an open sharing activity which encourages all children to participate. By expressing ideas and listening to what others say, students adjust their previous knowledge or understanding, accommodate new information and increase their levels of awareness. Teachers should emphasize active listening during these sessions. Students should be encouraged to listen carefully and politely to what their classmates contribute, to tell the speakers or the teacher when they cannot hear others clearly and to think of different suggestions or responses to share. What is its purpose? * to focus students' attention on a particular topic * to generate a quantity of ideas * to teach acceptance and respect for individual differences * to encourage learners to take risks in sharing their ideas and opinions * to demonstrate to students that their knowledge and their language abilities are valued and accepted * to introduce the practice of idea collection prior to beginning tasks such as writing or solving problems...

In the autonomous project organization, each project operates as its own, somewhat independent entity. From the time human beings began forming social organizations to accomplish aims and objectives they could not accomplish as individuals, managing has been essential to ensure the coordination of individual efforts. As society continuously relied on group effort, and as many organized groups have become large, the task of managers has been increasing in importance and complexity. Henceforth, managerial theory has become crucial in the way managers manage complex organizations. The central thesis of this paper is that although some managers in different parts of the world could have achieved managerial success without having basic theoretical knowledge in management, it has to be unequivocally emphasized that those managers who have mixed management theory in their day-to-day practice, have had better chances of managing their organizations more efficiently...

DECRIPTION: This session will first introduce students to factor analysis techniques including common factor analysis and principal components analysis. A factor analysis is a data reduction technique to summarize a number of original variables into a smaller set of composite dimensions, or factors. It is an important step in scale development and can be used to demonstrate construct validity of scale items. We will then move onto cluster analysis techniques. Cluster analysis groups individuals or objects into clusters so that objects in the same cluster are homogeneous and there is heterogeneity across clusters. This technique is often used to segment the data into similar, natural, groupings. For both analytical...

...multi-ethnic, multi-cultural classrooms? • develop and use classroom rules and routines? • use classroom consequences that work? • design positive behavioral supports for challenging behaviors? • avoid career- and health-threatening frustration and burnout? The establishment and maintenance of safe and supportive classrooms that contribute to high quality student achievement are critical skills that are rarely taught at the university. Consequently, those skills must be crafted and honed “on the job.” Each school and each classroom presents its own unique challenges, and because every year brings a new group of students, teachers must become lifelong learners. The foundation of this learning lies in just a few research-supported principles and actions, TeachSafeSchools.com and the Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention and Treatment have condensed the information for ready consumption. Innovations That Will Change Your Tomorrow

...32 Innovations That Will Change Your Tomorrow The electric light was a failure. gets you there. It’s bad financial decisions and blueprints for machines that weren’t built until decades later. It’s the important leaps forward that synthesize lots of ideas, and it’s the belly-up failures that teach us what not to do. When we ignore how innovation actually works, we make it hard to see what’s happening right in front of us today. If you don’t know that the incandescent light was a failure before it was a success, it’s easy to write off some modern energy innovations — like solar panels — because they haven’t hit the big time fast enough. Worse, the fairy-tale view of history implies that innovation has an end. It doesn’t. What we want and what we need keeps changing. The incandescent light was a 19th-century failure and a 20th- century success. Now it’s a failure again, edged out by new technologies, like LEDs, that were, themselves, failures for many years. That’s what this issue is about: all the little failures, trivialities and not-quite-solved mysteries that make the successes possible. This is what innovation looks like. It’s messy, and it’s awesome. Maggie KoerthBaker Invented by the British chemist Humphry Davy in the early 1800s, it spent nearly 80 years being passed from one initially hopeful researcher to another, like some not-quite-housebroken puppy. In 1879, Thomas Edison finally figured out how to make an incandescent light bulb that people would buy. But...

For mature industries, researchers have emphasized strengths in operations and execution, with the implication that innovation-oriented companies must enter early in the product lifecycle or not at all. Here we examine the decision of Apple Inc. to enter the mobile handset business. We link the iPhone entry strategy to its historic competencies and the industry context of commodization and convergence. From this we offer conclusions about openness in mobile phones and prospects for a single dominant design for convergence devices.
