...Nations are maintaining a variety of welfare programs to rule out the effects of poverty today. In the United States, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is designed to end hunger and improve the health of many low-income families. In addition, this program fights malnutrition and ensures the family to maintain a healthy diet. However, this program is beneficial for some families, yet it has its flaws. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program should consider altering its program requirements and monitor the people who apply for it. Although the benefits of SNAP are admirable, I believe the laws behind the program must be altered. Families accepted for the assistance are not drug tested, but I believe they should be. As an employee at a Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, I experience many men and women coming in and purchasing their food while they are under the influence of marijuana. Standing at the end of my register, I watch families come in, fill their buggies up with name brand food, and utilize their Nutritional Assistance benefits. Although SNAP was designed for the low-income families to maintain a healthy diet, junk food is the only thing that their benefits are used for. The SNAP should emphasize the rule of healthy eating (Are)....

...Running Head: THE FOOD STAMP PROGRAM 1 The Food Stamp Program Patricia Ibrahim PPA 601 Foundations of Public Administration Instructor Raby THE FOOD STAMP PROGRAM 2 The first Food Stamp Program started in 1939 during the height of the Great Depression, a period of high unemployment and widespread hunger. The program was successful, but the need for food assistance in America didn’t last very long. Soon after entering World War II in 1941, the U.S. began a period of booming growth and prosperity.(Cancio, Coleen, How Food Stamps Work) The program operated from 1939-1943, and was seen as an innovative way to respond to severe hunger caused by the Depression while also supporting farmers. The food stamps were made of orange and blue paper in the form of coupons. The stamps were purchased by citizens at a value equal to what they spent on food each month. ...Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Jill Lukas Professor Teeple Sociology of The Family December 16, 2015 Like many anti-hunger programs in the past, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) was designed to alleviate the hunger and malnutrition of the poor. While there are many benefits to millions of people with SNAP, there is also great cost and controversy. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.), as of November 6, 2015, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program assisted nearly 46 million people in almost 23 million households in meeting their nutritional needs. The cost for this assistance was $63,932,308,264.00 in 2015 according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This is how it works: The Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service administers the SNAP program and then gives direction to all fifty states who then will establish who is eligible and who is not. (Blau,Abramovitz 2014, p.434). The state also regulates and administers the benefit for its residents. Once eligible, the recipient may purchase any type of non-prepared food. The SNAP food stamp program is the largest nutrition assistance program offered by the U.S.D.A. The goal of this program is to help poor families put balanced meals on the table in the quest to end malnutrition and hunger. SNAP provides monthly benefits for eligible, low income families in the form of a benefits card which is similar to a credit card and does away...

...These policies are designed to reduce poverty, provide healthcare, and promote equal opportunities. Some of the most significant policies in place that aim to reduce economic inequality include: The Earned Income Tax Credit, The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and the Affordable Care Act. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a refundable tax credit for low-to moderate-income workers, especially those with children. It is one of the most effective tools in reducing poverty, particularly for working families, by supplementing their income and encouraging employment. According to research from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the EITC lifted about 5.6 million people out of poverty in 2020, including 3 million children (CBPP, 2021). The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the largest federal nutrition assistance program, designed to alleviate food insecurity by providing low-income individuals and families with funds to purchase food. It directly reduces economic inequality by ensuring access to basic necessities. Research from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) shows that SNAP lifted 2.8 million people out of poverty in 2019 and reduced child poverty by 13.2% (USDA, 2020). ...prepared each day to face the challenges of feeding families in need. Majority of the people that are served by food banks, have children. The biggest challenge of about serving so many needy families is knowing that without the programs we (the food banks) run many of these people would not be getting any of the nutrition that they need on a daily basis. (FeedingAmerica.org) In the world today there are people who never have to worry about where their next meal is coming from. However, there are other who face those woes every day. Food banks are one of the options people have to help feed their families. The community food bank of New Jersey, along with our partner agencies, feed an estimated 900,000 people throughout the year in the state of New Jersey alone. There are also many other options available to New Jersey residents including the WIC program for pregnant woman and their children and SNAP (supplemental nutrition assistance program). But it is still hard for many residents to make ends meet and provide enough food with enough nutritional value for their families. The rising cost of putting food on the table is becoming a burden on many families. More and more people are turning to food banks and supplemental nutritional programs to help either feed their families completely or to help bring the food to the tables. In New Jersey alone 13.5% of adults and a staggering 18.6% of children are food insecure. This means that this percentage of people do not know...
