TDS on payments to contractors 4. TDS on commission & Brokerage 5. TDS on fees for professional & technical services It also has various subsections explaining the procedure, applicability and collection of TDS. It is a very relevant tax in terms of its share in total tax revenue being collected in India. It is complicated in nature and in calculation and hence, needs to be scrutinized properly. INTRODUCTION Tax deducted at source is one of the modes of collecting Income-tax from the assessees in India. Such collection of tax is effected at the source when income arises or accrues. The tax so deducted at source by the payer, has to be deposited in the Government treasury to the credit of Central Govt. within the specified time. ...factors the oligopolists have to consider; type of product, strategic behavior and mutual interdependence, entry barriers, merger’s, some of the shortcomings of this market structure as well as the potential for profits. As the definition of the term indicates, in order to be considered an oligopoly, there are to be only a small number of producers. More specifically, the structure calls for “a few large producers”.2 The textbook, Microeconomics by McConnell, Brue, Flynn and Barbiero goes on to indicate that any industry which uses the term Big Three, Big Four, etc. would be considered an oligopoly. The Canadian banking industry is well known by the “Big 5” banks: RBC (Royal Bank of Canada), TD (Toronto-Dominion Bank), Scotiabank (Bank of Nova Scotia), BMO (Bank of Montreal) and CIBC (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce). To further confirm the fact that the “Big 5” are indeed an oligopoly, combined, they account for more than 85 % of the banking industry in Canada.3 Let us now begin the analysis. Type of Product - Homogeneous Oligopoly Canada’s banking industry produces standardized products, therefore classifying the industry as a homogeneous oligopoly. The Encyclopedia of Business states that standardized products are developed when “the major firms produce identical products, such as steel bars or aluminum ingots.”4 The website goes on to state that prices tend to be uniform in...

...scandals since 2001, which leads to the credibility of corporate financial reports under suspicion, furthermore, shocking investors’ confidence. Consequently, corporate governance mechanism has been a crucial issue discussed again. Sarbanes-Oxley Act was enacted in 2002 to enhance corporate government mechanism which is viewed as the priority of financial revolution, in the expectation that governance mechanism may be reinforced, public confidence retrieved, accuracy and reliability of financial information assured. In Bangladesh a massive stock market meltdown hit the market in the middle of 2010. The DGEN Index was cut by two third and a lot of investor lost all of their money. Then very recently major financial institutions like Sonali Bank, Basic Bank etc. were caught in financial scam which again shook the confidence of the market to such industries. These events renewed and reinforced people’s interest in study of corporate governance and how it could have prevented such mishaps. Corporate governance describes the structure of rights and responsibilities among the parties that have a stake in a firm. System of corporate governance could be defined as a set of processes and structures used to direct a corporation's business. Once implemented, an effective corporate governance system can help to ensure an appropriate division of power among shareholders, the board of directors, and management. It is not just corporate management; it is something much broader which include a fair...

Bashar Deakin University, Australia ABSTRACT This paper explores the relative role of aggregate demand and supply shocks in affecting the output level and inflation rate in a low-income country vulnerable to various economic shocks. The study uses Bangladesh data, and following Cover et al (2006), employs a modification of the BlanchardQuah (BQ) approach, in which the two shocks are allowed to be correlated. Strong evidence is found for the hypothesis that aggregate demand and supply shocks are interrelated in Bangladesh. For the case in which causality is assumed to be running from demand to supply shocks, it was found that an independent supply shock plays significant role for fluctuations in inflation, which was absent in the standard BQ model. The results suggest that a tightening of monetary policy may lead to an adverse effect on the long-run growth potential and some supply-side policies...

...growth rate of 9% p.a. at the earliest. 2. To deepen and broaden the agenda for inclusive development. 3. To improve delivery mechanisms of the government. In keeping with tradition, the Budget proposals are a mixed bag of the good and the bad. Some of the biggest disappointments in the Budget proposals are that there are no provisions for any reforms in the FDI policy, the public sector enterprises such as banks and insurance companies are to remain in the public sector and there is a projected fiscal deficit of 6.8%. The major positives are the proposals to abolish Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT), Commodities Transaction Tax (CTT) as well as to phase out surcharge on income tax starting with its elimination in this Budget from personal income tax. Another significant benefit is the clarification on taxation of Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs). This synopsis prepared by the tax team of ALMT Legal summarises some of the important direct and indirect tax proposals that were made by the Finance Minister in his Budget speech on 6 July 2009. BUDGET 2009-10 – SUMMARY OF PROPOSALS Direct Tax The Budget focuses on improvement on the efficiency of the tax system by proposing setting up of a Centralized Processing Centre (CPC), introduction of a new direct tax code for...

...Abstract In recent years fuzzy set theory has emerged as a transcendental tool to deal with environmental engineering application having uncertainty, ambiguity and subjectivity. Analysis of surface water quality plays significant role in environmental impact assessment studies. For qualitative description of surface water quality, number of physical, chemical and biological parameters are taken into consideration, allotted a weightage factor and calculated into an index called water quality index (WQI). Water quality index uses crisp set to analyse water contaminants and hence deals with standing boundary conditions. This paper illustrates use of fuzzy inference system for analysing physical and chemical parameters to assess surface water quality. A water quality index calculated with fuzzy inference system has been developed and discussed. Introduction Determination of status of water quality of a river or any other water sources is highly indeterminate. The current method of determining water quality index which is in practice utilizes statistical approach and is not precise in most of the time. Nowadays environmental protection and water quality management has become an important issue in public policies throughout the world. Moreover, government is concerned about the quality of their environmental resources because of the complexity in water quality data sets. Many countries have introduced a scheme for river water quality monitoring and assessment, examining...

...Preface: The balance of payment is a summary of transactions between domestic and foreign residents for a specific country over a specific period of time. It represents an accounting of a country’s international transaction for a period, usually a quarter or a year. It accounts for transactions by business, individuals and the government. A balance of payments statement can be broken down into various components. These include payments for the country's exports and imports of goods, services, financial capital, and financial transfers. The current account represents a summary of the flow of funds between one specified country and all other countries due to a purchase of goods and services, or the provision of income from financial assets. The capital account represents a summary of the flow of funds resulting from the sales of assets between one specified country and all other countries over a specified period of time. Thus, it compares the new foreign investment made by a country with the foreign investments within a country over a particular time period. Transactions that reflect inflows of funds generate positive numbers for the country’s balance, while transactions that reflect outflows of funds generate negative numbers for the country. Current Account: The current account is one of the two primary components of the balance of payments, the other being capital account. It is the sum of the balance of trade (net revenue on exports minus payments for imports), factor income...
