Listening with an open mind

While hearing, consider all sides of an issue to avoid defensiveness. Moreover, be ready to put into consideration both new ideas as well as viewpoints. Remember that every opinion that you encounter as you listen should be a hypothesis, which you can both examine and experiment if it works.

Come up with a receptive listening environment

It is important to put away any things that will distract your attention. There is a need that you should have a private and comfortable place where you cannot be distracted (Alessandra, 2014).

Identify with the speaker while asking questions

This involves putting yourself in the place of the speaker. You need to understand the speaker from his or her own perspective. Moreover, you will fuel the desire to listen to the speaker and encourage him to expand on the topic if you ask questions.

Concentrate and show the speaker that you want to listen

Pay attention to the message being delivered by the speaker. There is also a need that you should look and act in accordance to the comments of the speaker (“Learning Tips,” 2012). Apart from just listening, place a demand on yourself that you must understand what the speakers are saying.

Control your emotions and temper

There is a great possibility that you can misunderstand what the speaker is saying if you cannot control your emotions as well as your temper. Moreover, it will interfere with your listening techniques

In order to have good conversation that is beneficial to both parties, both parties have to first become better listeners. Summary Good communication skills are important for every aspect of life. Communication improvement skills can improve relationships, professional development, spiritual growth, and friendships. However, a person cannot improve his/her communication skills if he/she does not improve his/her listening skills. Many people have bad communication because they fail to listen to the other person. In conversation people are more concerned with telling their story than listening to others story (Peterson, 2007, pg. 5). Unnecessary confusion is caused by people thinking they are listening but they do not really hear each other (Peterson, 2007, pg. 7). Peterson (2007) provides helpful communication strategies to improve listening skills. The flow of conversation can be affected by physical emotions. ...Insomnia plagues many people in today's society. Insomnia can be caused by ingesting too much caffeine, noise pollution, stresses and anxieties that won't let the mind rest, excessive computer and television use, and other disorders. The Circadian Rhythm is negatively affected in insomniacs, rendering their bodies incapable of comprehending when it's day and when it's night. As a result, insomnia affects one's ability to work, function in relationships and undertake relaxing activities such as sports. It can even lead to conditions ranging from sleep apnea to death. When unable to sleep, solutions can include trying warm baths, hot drinks, the reduction of excessive stimuli and herbal remedies like valerian root and ginger teas. Other recommendations are a dark room, exercise earlier in the day, and a reduction in daytime napping. There are a few ways to help insomnia but music seems to be some of the most profound. Classical music is also a good option to ease the mind and relax the nervous system. Music relaxation deals directly with cutting away with stress in your life. Effective Listening Skills

...http://vigaexalt.blogspot.com/2014/01/effective-listening-skills.html Why active listening is critical in business? Most of us tend to hear rather than LISTEN. Listen shows that you are serious and committed in acquiring and confirming the information. Paying attentive listening proves significant as an ability to understand thoroughly the defined meanings, understood the read lines clearly and enables to relate to with the speaker. We may have encountered poor listening habit which contributes to repetitive of tasks, poor quality output, customer’s dissatisfaction, wrong interpretation and waste of raw materials. How does a poor listening skill affect the overall operation? Several times when I order the required food and beverages at Mamak restaurants, there is bound to be a mistake. I ordered Tea but the waiter shall bring Ice Tea. One of the key weaknesses I noticed in a Mamak restaurant is their waiters shall take order without jotting down in their order record. Another incident related to poor listening skills was with Astro. I called their customer care line to inform the defects on the decoder due to lightening. Their customer representative had wrongly inserted my address and I had to wait up to 10 days for a new installation. Worse I had to call them every day to find out what went wrong. They only found it out one the 9th day that the address was inserted wrongly. My colleague who works as Quality Manager stated that his newly recruited foreign operators from...

What Can I Take Away from the Experience of Observing This Video That Will Help Me Build Knowledge and Self-Awareness in One of the Following Areas: Therapeutic Communication; or Inter-Professional Communication?

...understanding of effective communication therapy techniques. What stands out to me the most from the first video is the trust that both sally and her husband have in the paramedics. There is a sense of complete faith and willing participation from both Sally and her husband. How the paramedics achieve this involvement is by implementing a holistic approach and some great communicative skills such as expressing empathy, active listening, encouragement and providing information. 'The focus needs to be person-centred rather than nurse- or task-focused and the relationship is a key element’(Bach and Grant, 2011). By taking time to do this, health care workers can advance their therapeutic relationships with patients, encouraging compassionate care. From this we can therefore see that it is different from social and collegial communication. In this essay I will discuss the communication techniques used and demonstrated in the first vignette, how they are applied and explain why they are successful. Empathy in one of many ways can be described as the ability to supportively communicate a sensitive awareness and affirmation of another person's feelings and the unique meanings attached to them (Mearns and Thorne, 2007). Healthcare workers who are committed and compassionate also must use empathy as a tool to build a rapport with their patient. This is demonstrated in the first vignette through the paramedics active listening and understanding of concern by Sally and...

How Would Improving Your Listening Skills Increase the Effectiveness of Your Communication in the Workplace?

...Improving my listening skills at work would increase the effectiveness of my communication because the person or people that are talking to me or trying to explain something to me will know that I am being attentive they will know that they can trust that I am hearing what they are saying, understanding what they are saying, and most importantly hear what they are saying. I know that if my managers know that I am actively listening it could definitely have positive outcomes on where I want to be in my career. The main strategy of effective listening that I think I need to personally work on would be “Mindful” (Wood p 160). In my work situation being mindful would be me learning to in our group meeting situations to let people speak all the way through even if they are totally off topic, not to try and dominate the talk stage. At work I would also want to work on my “active listening skills” (wood p160) which I know is hard work but it will force me to ask questions and let the other person know I am interested in what they are saying and I am actually taking it in. It would also force me to ask questions because I know myself personally, if I am not actively listen my mind wanders on to other things and I won’t ask questions and I won’t retain a word that was said. These same techniques can help me in my personal life as well because a lot of times my husband will have important information that he needs to discuss with me, and to be honest with you I would really only use my...

...EFFECTIVE LISTENING IN THE WORKPLACE Jeff Bernier Abstract “Listening is perhaps the most critical element in language and language learning, for it is the key to speaking, and beyond that, reading and writing. At all levels --- from entry level to managerial --- listening is perceived as crucial for communication. Yet listening remains one of the least understood processes in language learning” (Allene Grognet and Carol Van Duzer, 2002, p. 1). The ability to listen to employees and colleagues is an essential skill for developing a productive environment. By improving listening skills, supervisors and employees can create a “listening environment” within their own organization. How to Be a Good Listener in a Vet Practice

...Wiegreffe 06-12-2014 Every successful person and every satisfying relationship became so through using good communication skills as part of the process. However, listening is the part of communicating that often gets short shrift in favor of talking. There is a practical side to improving listening skills, especially for anyone in a service profession such as veterinary medicine. How well you listen impacts your relationships with clients, coworkers and suppliers. Better listening builds better partnerships. (The American Veterinary Medical Association, 1997) Personally or professionally all of us could use some practice on our listening skills. For example; a client asks an interesting question, but is mumbling so you can’t exactly hear what he is saying. “Excuse me sir, you’re talking to low can you please repeat that for me, thank you” This is a great way of politely letting the person know that you can’t hear them. Hearing refers to the sounds that you hear, whereas listening requires more than that: it requires focus.  Listening means paying attention not only to the story, but how it is told, the use of language and voice, and how the other person uses his or her body.  In other words, it means being aware of both verbal and non-verbal messages. (Listening Skills, 2011-2014) Techniques for reflective listening include echoing, paraphrasing, and summarizing. Echoing involves repeating the last few words that a client said (i.e. ‘‘So, Friskie threw up twice last night’’)...
