...Technology is Detrimental to Intelligence According to Merriam-Webster, technology is the application of scientific knowledge to other fields of inquiry in order to accomplish a task (“Technology”). Light bulbs, refrigerators, microwaves, and computers are all technology. However, this argument will be focused towards technology with self-luminous screens-computers, laptops, tablets, phones, etc. Self-luminous devices are common in everyday life and affect many spheres of life. One sphere affected is intelligence. Technology has a definite impact on intelligence; the impact is negative. ...In the novel 1984, by George Orwell, technology plays a major role in the society. Similarly, it has made living in the 21 st century a very controlled society in which people solely depend on it to live their lives. Technology is a very large factor in a way that the social media has taken control of the human race. People tend to look at their cell phones right when they wake up and right as they are about to fall asleep. For some people, they rely on technology to begin their daily routine. Though it makes life most sufficient, there was a time before this generation that did not need it. Security cameras today can watch what is happening and what we are doing without the people even knowing it. When technology are put to good use, it is possible to save...

...In today’s society modern technology has helped us live longer, healthier, cleaner, and more comfortable lives than our ancestors did. Yet we are all aware of some technologies disadvantages, ranging from the minor frustrations we have with technology gadgets to the thousands of lives lost from automobile accidents. Technology has changed the way we as humans live; it changes our understanding of the way things work and changes the way we interact with one another. In science, our goal is to get further and understand everything there is to understand about our earth and our capabilities with technology. But the way we are viewing technology now these days is making our life more efficient for us. When you look around what do you see? You see certain individuals walking around with a phone up to their ear, holding laptop cases, or just listening to music from their Ipod. From a Christian perspective, technology must be judged for its value in realizing the good and fulfilling the moral lessons that Jesus taught. When it comes to people, technology is important in providing food, clothing, shelter and supplies. Through technology random helpful people were able to send books to Africa to support a school ran by the Peace Corps by airplanes. Church’s sent much needed food and clothing to Haiti after the earthquake on airplanes and ships. Also many people went to help after hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. People were able to use technology to contact loved ones either by phone...

...Recent advancements in technology have led to many changes in our daily lives, but some people would argue that we are becoming too dependent on technology and that not all of these changes are beneficial. Give your opinion and support your argument. Nowadays technology is so developed that people have the opportunity to use improved computers, labour saving devices and many other items, thus making their lives easier. We have more leisure time for taking a rest, partaking in some sports, listening to music and playing a variety of computer games etc,. Computers have also had a positive influence on children. Computer games can encourage children to think much more about themselves, and gain valuable experience which is relevant to the 'real' world. Contemporary children's software is highly educational and teaches a child about the world outside the classroom in a way that was impossible before. Family carers who previously spent all their time doing housework can now enjoy more leisure time, and office workers can work more efficiently and quickly. In spite of the benefits that advanced technology offers there are some supporters of the idea that people are becoming too dependent on technology. These days researches show that children spend too much time in their homes, playing computer games and watching television instead of reading books and being outside with their friends. The families spend less time together than 20 years ago. The trend is towards individual...

...As technology advances in today's world, people start to lose confidence and skill in themselves and others. By that I mean, we start to have computers do everything for us, ex: we use calculators to do our math, GPS’s to navigate, and lets face it, we all look up answers for our homework on google. We rely on technology to do basic things. Remember the movie series that goes by the name Terminator? Yeah the movie when the robot man goes berserk and kills everybody. Im aware that that's Hollywood, but consider the following: We programmed the robot, We created it, We told it what to do, It learned, It turned on us. So when we program for say, a car, what makes you think that it won't go out on its own. The car would have GPS systems that can take it wherever it wants on land, It has sensors to know when itd need gas, and it doesn't have to stop if its systems said otherwise. What i'm saying is that with some slight corruption, somebody can create a faulty program in the car, that causes it to do something that the operator doesn't like....

...The Intelligent Essay Assessor: Applications to Educational Technology Peter W. Foltz, New Mexico State University Darrell Laham, Knowledge Analysis Technologies Thomas K. Landauer, University of Colorado Abstract The Intelligent Essay Assessor (IEA) is a set of software tools for scoring the quality of essay content. The IEA uses Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), which is both a computational model of human knowledge representation and a method for extracting semantic similarity of words and passages from text. Simulations of psycholinguistic phenomena show that LSA reflects similarities of human meaning effectively. To assess essay quality, LSA is first trained on domain-representative text. Then student essays are characterized by LSA representations of the meaning of the words used, and they are compared with essays of known quality in regard to their degree of conceptual relevance and the amount of relevant content. Over many diverse topics, the IEA scores agreed with human experts as accurately as expert scores agreed with each other. Implications are discussed for incorporating automatic essay scoring in more general forms of educational technology. 1. Introduction While writing is an essential part of the educational process, many instructors find it difficult to incorporate large numbers of writing assignments in their courses due to the effort required to evaluate them. However, the ability to convey information verbally is an important educational achievement...

...In her article Face time vs screen time, Chandra Johnson says that technology has impacted our lives very much and we are losing the personal touch or what she says as the emotional intelligence i.e. how the other person reacts to certain situations differently while they are texting or while communicating face to face. I agree with all her points and I also feel that there should be a balance about how often we use technology. We should use technology but not at the cost of our smartness, as some people nowadays rely too much on technology. Technology helps us in communication. For example, You have a friend who just moved somewhere else and if you want to contact him you can just call him or even face time him but then instead of talking with him on face time, you start looking at his images on Facebook or other social media platforms, that’s where it creates more distance between the two of us. Unfortunately, of what we use our screen time for is not creating intimate connections. Our time with our screen is mostly spent consuming information and because of this you may end up endlessly scrolling through information which is not even important. What once was our free time to connect with friends is now spent at staring at our...

...Throughout history, society has developed and grown through advances in technology. These have proved both advantageous and detrimental to society as a whole. Technology has helped connect the world and help make everybody happier. However, at what cost? When does technology cease to be beneficial and begin its destruction? Technology has led to the illusion of multitasking, the chronic and widespread abuse of prescription drugs, and the downfall of society as a whole through virtual realities. The article “Why the modern world is bad for your brain”, by Daniel J Levitin shines light on many of the societal norms in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. “Multitasking has been found to increase the production of the stress hormone cortisol as well as the fight-or-flight hormone adrenaline, which can...
