The Runaway Dialectical Journal

... Solitary confinement was a really depressing scene. People were banging and begging to escape the terrifying prison. John woke up groggily asking himself, Why do I do these things? He then appeared to identify some type of infection spreading amongst the prisoners, but ahead he could say anything else he was thrust into the dispiriting concrete cell. By the time John looked up, the metal bars trapped him in, without an outflow. “You need to learn how to be a real leader!” John wanted shout with anger and distress. But, he tested to not leave his anger to take the best of him again. There has come to be a path to amaze out of here! John thought frantically. He sat down at the steel table and he heavily exhaled to reveal an old map covered by dust. The map seemed to be there for weeks and ant the bottom of this revealing map it said: Cover with dust when finished John stared at the note curiously and took off his glasses as he continued to analyze the map. “It’s a map of the underground, but how will I get to those pipes?” He carefully peeled the tape that held the old, thin paper from the banged, concrete wall and revealed a hole. The hole seemed to be dug by a fellow prisoner and in the makeshift hole was an old, red screwdriver, which was blooming with rust. John grabbed the screwdriver, confused, “Why do I need this screwdriver? It’s not like I could dig myself out of here!” He shared a chuckle with himself and went to bed, and thought about how that screwdriver...

In Dealing with Prison Procedures

...In dealing with Prison Procedure, I feel that many things are put into perspective all the way from intake to the release of an inmate back into the community or until they have served their sentence and their time is up. Everything in a prison must be on close watch. The workers should be watched just as well as the inmates. All the prisons procedures should be followed under a very strict manner to ensure that the prisonfunctions properly and effectively.      Prison procedure should be very strict in every aspect pertaining to the institution. From the intake, the guards should evaluate every inmate entering the facility and then place them accordingly. There are many different things to look at when considering the placement of an inmate. The age and the nature of the offense are some key ones, also their race. All entering inmates must have full cavity searches prior to being placed in a cell; this is for guard and inmate safety purposes.      In running the prison the prison should be well advanced and should have only skilled and trained workers working under the institution. There should be no excuse for not knowing the proper prison procedures and rules. Punishment should be inflicted on those who don’t abide be them, for both the workers and the inmates.       In considering the proper procedure you should think about the inmate’s life, and how to control them. There are many things that can be done to maintain a controllable environment for an institution....

Genetic Disorder

...A genetic disorder is a disease that is caused by an abnormality in an individual’s DNA. Abnormalities can range from small mutation in a single gene to the addition or subtraction of an entire chromosome or set of chromosomes. Most disorders are rather rare and effect one person in every several thousands or millions. Three examples of genetic disorders are Down syndrome, Turner syndrome, and Breast/Ovarian cancer. Down syndrome, also called Trisomy 21, is a developmental disorder which is caused by an extra copy of chromosomes 21. It is named after John Langdon Down who is a British physician who described the syndrome in 1866 (Living With Down Syndrome). The extra genetic material causes delays in the way a child develops, both mentally and physically. The physical features and medical problems associated with Down syndrome can vary widely from child to child. While some children with Down syndrome need a lot of medical attention, others have healthy lives. Children with the disorder tend to share certain physical features such as a flat facial profile, upward slant of the eyes, small ears, and a protruding tongue. Although some children with DS have no significant health problems, others may experience some medical issues that require extra care. One medical issue is pulmonary hypertension which is a serious condition that can lead to untreatable damage to the lungs. To detect this issue all infants should be evaluated by a pediatric cardiologist. Two other medical issues...

Brazilian Agriculture and the Wto

...1 AGRICULTURE IN BRAZIL: FROM THE 1980’s TO THE G-20 MAURO MASON DE CAMPOS ADORNO Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements of the Degree of Master by Coursework in International Policy Studies School of Politics Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences La Trobe University Bundoora, Victoria 3083 Australia 2 July 2005 Abstract The Brazilian economy transformed from a state of financial crisis in the 1980’s to become a leading agriculture exporter in the late 1990’s. Economic reforms implemented by the Real Plan were a response to a bankrupt decade of failed economic plans and high inflation rates. In this period agriculture played a key role in the control of the inflation and in the stabilization of the economy. The domestic environment of the Brazilian economy and the role of agriculture helped Brazil to develop a more active role and led it to seek for a leadership position in the international agricultural negotiations. On the eve on the WTO’s Cancun Round of negotiation a new coalition of developing countries formed the G-20. The Group was born from a Brazilian initiative and for the first time a group of developing countries stood up against the developed countries in the agriculture negotiations. 3 Acknowledgments I would like to dedicate this thesis to my mother Ana and my brother Matheus. Who believed in me even when I did not. I love you guys. I would like to thank my Father for the support, during the whole process,...

Introduction to Psychology

...TPS 101: INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY TPS 101 serves as the beginning course in psychology; as such, it is broad in scope. The course will introduce students to the history of psychology, and current paradigms and theories. We will cover neuroscience, sensation, perception, memory, and language, stress and health psychology, personality and social psychology, intelligence, and developmental psychology. Because of time limitations, none of these topics can be covered in great depth. The reference textbooks and the material presented in class will serve as the primary sources for the material to be covered. INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF PSYCHOLOGY Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes. It is an academic and applied discipline involving the scientific study of mental processes and behaviour. Psychology also refers to the application of such knowledge to various spheres of human activity, including problems of individuals' daily lives and the treatment of mental illness. It is largely concerned with humans, although the behaviour and mental processes of animals can also be part of psychology research, either as a subject in its own right (e.g. animal cognition and ethnology), or somewhat more controversially, as a way of gaining an insight into human psychology by means of comparison (including comparative psychology). Origins of the psychology Near the end of 19th century things started drawing together. Questions raised by philosophers were being...
