The two texts address their audiences very differently in the beginning. Sue, in text A doesn’t seem to want to ask questions outright, so begins with a phatic utterance “how yer doin Kat” to establish a conversation before launching in. This demonstrates her feelings of intimacy, probably because she is familiar with the audience, as seen by this fact that she wants to keep the informality. It also exemplifies the context as this is spontaneous speech and she is not certain which way the conversation will go until it happens. In contrast, text B launches in immediately with the point and purpose with “Now I am fortunate” which demonstrates that he has attitude that precision and direct approaches are necessary, and an attitude he wanted to convey in order to achieve his implied purpose of gaining support. This is also done due to the context as people have shown up to hear this speech and the purpose is very clear and he knows what the audience want to hear. In Text B, the personal pronoun “we” is used to show the feelings are conveyed by the whole audience, which adds a personal touch and creates a sense of belonging and intimacy with a large audience, utilising the fact that we all have a human desire to belong. In Text A, Kat uses the personal pronoun “you” when “one” would be more correct, conveying the information in an informal way. This is typical of spontaneous speech as she has less time to think about what she is saying and she is speaking to a close and familiar friend which suggests that she is comfortable and know that they will not mind if she makes any errors. The language in both texts contrasts clearly. For example, for the most part, a fairly high frequency level of lexical choices are used in the spontaneous speech, where vocabulary can’t be though about beforehand, is seen in Text A. For instance, nouns, such as “stuff” and “a bit” convey the information much less formally, due to the familiar context. However, there is some high frequency vocabulary, such as “your clinical portfolio to do and that could be co-ordinated”, but that is because the nature and of the conversation is one where technical terms around the semantic field of nursing are likely to be discussed. Text B has very high frequency words in such as “the pursuit of wisdom and fulfilment of human potential”. This conveys his feelings in an authoritative tone, because he is the Prime Minister and he is trying to gain the respect of people who are as educated and also more uneducated as him. It is typical of planned speech to have more thoughtful words in which would not necessarily be used in everyday life as the person preparing it has the time to go over it and change and rephrase it in order to convey his own feelings in the best possible way, which again is important to the context as he is trying to command respect and impress the general public. Text A doesn’t convey feelings quite as strongly, with less emotive adjectives being used, such as “cool”. This is most likely due to the familiar audience, so colloquial words are more likely to be used and more emotive language would not fit in the context of the conversation.
