...Harvard Business School 9-898-171 Rev. December 11, 2000 Nantucket Nectars Well, we knew we were in an interesting position. We had five companies express interest in acquiring a portion of the company. Sometimes you have to laugh about how things occur. Tropicana (Seagram) and Ocean Spray became interested in us after reading an article in Brandweek magazine that erroneously reported that Triarc was in negotiations to buy us. (See Exhibit 1 for a copy of this article.) At the time, we hadn’t even met with Triarc, although we knew their senior people from industry conferences. We have no idea how this rumor began. Within weeks Triarc and Pepsi contacted us. We told no one about these on-going negotiations and held all the meetings away from our offices so that no Nectars employee would become concerned. It was quite a frenetic time. The most memorable day was just a few days ago actually. Firsty and I were in an extended meeting with Ocean Spray, making us late for our second round meeting with Pepsi. Ultimately, Tom and I split up: Firsty stayed with Ocean Spray and I met with Pepsi. Ocean Spray never knew about the Pepsi meeting. Tom and I have learned under fire throughout our Nectars experience, but this experience was a new one for us. —Tom Scott, co-founder of Nantucket Nectars Research Associate Jon M. Biotti prepared this case under the supervision of Professors Joseph B. Lassiter III and William A. Sahlman as the basis for class discussion rather...

...Wales ( /ˈdoʊnəl ˈweɪlz/; born August 7, 1966[3]) is an American Internet entrepreneur best known as a co-founder and promoter of the online non-profit encyclopedia Wikipedia and the Wikia company.[4][5] Wales was born inHuntsville, Alabama, United States, where he attended Randolph School, a university-preparatory school, then earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in finance. While in graduate school, he taught at two universities, but left before completing a PhD in order to take a job in finance and later worked as the research director of a Chicago futures and options firm. In 1996, he and two partners founded Bomis, a male-oriented web portal featuring entertainment and adult content. The company would provide the initial funding for the peer-reviewed free encyclopedia Nupedia (2000–2003) and its successor, Wikipedia. On January 15, 2001, with Larry Sanger and others, Wales launched Wikipedia, a free, open content encyclopedia that enjoyed rapid growth and popularity, and as Wikipedia’s public profile grew, he became the project’s promoter and spokesman. He is historically cited as a co-founder of Wikipedia, though he has disputed the "co-" designation, declaring himself the sole founder.[6][7] Wales serves on the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit charitable organization he helped establish to operate Wikipedia, holding its board-appointed "community founder" seat. In 2004, he co-founded Wikia, a for-profit wiki-hosting service. His role in creating Wikipedia...

...electronics shop in a department store building in Tokyo. The company had $530 in capital and a total of eight employees.[11] In the following year he was joined by his colleague,[clarification needed] Akio Morita, and they founded a company called Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo[12][13] (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation). The company built Japan's first tape recorder, called the Type-G.[12] In 1958 the company changed its name to "Sony". Name[edit] When Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo was looking for a romanized name to use to market themselves, they strongly considered using their initials, TTK. The primary reason they did not is that the railway company Tokyo Kyuko was known as TTK.[12] The company occasionally used the acronym "Totsuko" in Japan, but during his visit to the United States, Morita discovered that Americans had trouble pronouncing that name. Another early name that was tried out for a while was "Tokyo Teletech" until Akio Morita discovered that there was an American company already using Teletech as a brand name.[14] The name "Sony" was chosen for the brand as a mix of two words. One was the Latin word "Sonus", which is the root of sonic and sound, and the other was "Sonny", a common slang term used in 1950s America to call a boy.[5] In the 1950s Japan "sonny boys", was a loan word into Japanese which connoted smart and presentable young men, which Sony founders Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka considered themselves to be.[5] The first Sony-branded product, the TR-55 transistor...

...Entrepreneurs in a Start-Up Support Program meet „Bird-in-Hand“ Impressions, Findings and Conclusions from an Experiment Author: Michael Faschingbauer, August 2008 In fall 2007, I set out to test effectuation principles and dynamic process in a publicly founded start-up-program in Austria. The results where compiled into the MBA master thesis Entrepreneurship with Effectuation: Testing an Innovative Approach to Business Start-UpSupport (Faschingbauer 2008). In this paper, I would like to present the outcomes after introducing the effectual “Bird-in-Hand” principle to a group of seven novice entrepreneurs in the process of their start-up preparation. 1 Abstract of my master thesis The support structures for business start-ups in Austria are based on causal assumptions about how one should start a business. One starts with the recognition of an opportunity, which needs to be concretized and developed through analysis and planning. According to the effectuation framework by Saras D. Sarasvathy (Sarasvathy 2008), expert entrepreneurs choose a radically different way. Effectuators allow goal ambiguity, they prefer partnerships and alliances to competitive strategies, make use of risk reducing schemes and opt for controlling the future instead of relying on predicting it. In my thesis, the learnable and teachable elements of effectuation were practically tested in a training scheme with entrepreneurs during start-up preparation. It was shown that effectuation training can directly...

...Under the Surface I believe the American flag symbolizes unity, freedom, and a strong nation. Red represents hardiness and valor, white represents hope, purity, and innocence, and blue represent vigilance, perseverance, and justice. Since 9-11, America has been filled with hatred and the blame went on more than just a few of people but on an entire religion. Often times Muslims that has no affiliation with the attack has been categorize as terrorist. The Islamic as a whole is a great faith for one to follow but a small group associated with the religion has caused much shame to the community. Al-Qaeda is a militant Islamist organization founded by Osama bin Landen in the late 1980s, which was the terrorist organization solely responsible for the attack of 9-11. Al-Qaeda has redefined the way we look at the Islamic religion. Al-Qaeda is the reason many Americans view the Islamic religion in such a negative way and classifies all Muslims as terrorists. Al-Qaeda is a political movement with a demonstrated military ability, which has sought to bypass the state while co-opting its attributes and channeling its resources (Mohamedou 42). The organization, which coalesced in Afghanistan under the initial troika leadership of Palestinian teacher Abdallah Azzam, Egyptian surgeon Ayman al Dhawahiri, and Saudi businessman Osama Bin Laden in August 1989, was born more in context of a major international armed conflict, namely the Soviet Union’s failed take –over...

...The U. S. Congress is failing the American people Politics have always been a topic of debate and expression of strong personal belief. To hear the discussions of relevance lately would to be of the budgets and how Congress is failing to make decision that the American public deems right and at least acceptable for even those who opposed the outcome for whatever reason they felt justified. To have a statement of Congress failing the American people brings to life the question that is the American people failing Congress and their constitutional rights? The Atlantic.com published a reading with the heading "Congress is failing" with Major Garrett being quoted as saying "If Republicans and Democrats can't solve their latest stalemate, disaster victims will go without federal relief." The statement is referring to the Disaster Relief Fund that was projected to run out of money within a week of this article. Hurricane Irene left thousands in shambles and the victims were turning to the U.S. Government for help and more at the disaster relief fund the government controls and distributes. Mr. Garrett claims that "Everyone is to blame" in Congress and goes on to point out how each department plays upon another and without a cohesive group it is deemed to fail and very quickly. The personal opinion of Mr. Garrett is the debate is no longer about what is right for the fund but the parties involved solely. If Congress is failing then why do we have Congress? Some have...

...Facebook & Yelp: A Platform for Redemption Blake Brown Arizona University Facebook & Yelp: A Platform for Redemption Introduction In 2004, private-equity firm Elevation Partners launched amid the fanfare of having U2’s Bono as a co-owner and a $1.9 billion investment fund. Bad bets on companies coupled with the high turnovers between some of the firm’s initial six founders, left Elevation Partners in a far too precarious of a state for their investors. Elevation initially promised their investors they would have their money back after ten years along with annual returns starting at 8%. 2010 saw the firm only able to return $8 million in profits to investors, but 2012 is an entirely different story. Elevation is hoping that investments in Facebook and Yelp will make their investors forget about the several missteps they have endured along the way. Analysis Backed by technology-industry veterans and the front man of the world’s most successful rock group, Elevate is in the process of raising $1 billion for a new investment fund. Attempting to rise from the ashes after investments in Palm Smartphones, Forbes Media LLC, and other companies left Elevation’s investor’s pockets far less deep then they had been promised. Despite rival private-equity funds questioning the stability of the management of the two funds, Elevation’s luck seems to be changing. Their lottery tickets of sorts lies in the performance of two social media titans, Facebook and Yelp. After...

...Islam are monotheistic, meaning they both believe in one God. In both religions God is the creator of everything and is loving and forgiving. He also has a special relationship with humans, and has made covenants with them. However, there is one major difference between the beliefs of Christians and Muslims regarding God. While Christians believe in the Holy Trinity, or three persons in one divine nature, Muslims believe that God is only one person. The trinity mentioned in the Christian religion is the belief in three God’s. The first major difference between these two religions is their founders. Muhammad is the founder of Islam. He, like all other Muslim prophets is believed by Muslims to be infallible and sinless. He was not only a religious leader, but also a political leader, which explains the common practice of integrated church and state in many Muslim countries. The founder of Christianity is Jesus. Although both Muslims and Christians recognize Jesus, their beliefs about him differ greatly. Both believe that Jesus was sinless, infallible, and born of the Virgin Mary. Both religions accept that Jesus preformed miracles, and was ascended, or raised up, to God. But while Muslims see Jesus as a highly regarded prophet, Christians see Him as God Himself. They believe that Jesus was crucified and resurrected on three days later in atonement for the sins of all mankind. Jesus was a spiritual, but not a political leader, and today most dominantly Christian countries practice...
