...The ability to choose between good and evil is something that we never really think about too often, or in any real detail. Even so; this decision that comes naturally to most, is something everyone must make throughout their life in order to guide their actions and control their future. This ability to choose, no matter what that choice may be or the outcome of that choice, displays a person’s power as an individual. Any attempts to control or influence that choice will, in turn, govern one's free will and enslave them. In the novel A Clockwork Orange, the author Anthony Burgess uses symbolism through imagery, the characterization of Alex, and a first person narrative point of view to show that without the ability to choose between good or evil, one becomes a slave. Symbolism through imagery explains how Alex's ability to choose between good and evil, is his ascendancy over the weak and innocent. The first of these symbols is the music that he loves to listen to. Classical music is the only thing that Alex's has ever truly cared for. The music represents an element of his choice and free will. When his ability to make choices is taken away from him, in an attempt to make him better, he is unintentionally forced to lose his passion for music, by which he exclaims, "And all the time the music got more and more gromky, like it was all a deliberate torture, O my brothers“. This music that once represented his freedom to choose is gone now, and he has been left without any reason...

When both cohesiveness and performance norms are high, productivity will be high. | Studies consistently show that the relationship between cohesiveness and productivity depends on the group's performance-related norms. If performance-related norms are high, a cohesive group will be more productive than will a less cohesive group. If cohesiveness is high and performance norms are low, productivity will be low. If cohesiveness is low and performance norms are high, productivity increases, but less than in the high-cohesiveness/high-norms situation. ...who cannot choose ceases to be a man."Anthony Burgess A Clockwork Orange is a novel about moral choice and free will. Alex's story shows what happens when an individual's right to choose is robbed for the good of society. The first and last chapters place Alex in more or less the same physical situation but his ability to exercise free will leads him to diametrically opposite choicesgood versus evil. The phrase, "what's it going to be then, eh?," echoes throughout the book; only at the end of the novel is the moral metamorphosis complete and Alex is finally able to answer the question, and by doing so affirms his freedom of choice. The capacity to choose freely is the attribute that distinguishes humans from robots; thus the possibility of true and heartfelt redemption remains open even to the most hardened criminal. A Clockwork Orange is a parable that reflects the Christian concept of sin followed by redemption. Alex's final and free choice of the good, by leaving behind the violence he had embraced in his youth, brings him to a higher moral level than the forced docility of his conditioning, which severed his ability to choose and grow up. The question, "what's it going to be then, eh," is asked at the beginning of each section of the novel. In the first and third part it is asked by Alex, but in the second part it is asked by the prison chaplain. The answer does not come until the end of the novel when Alex grows up and exercises his ability to choose. He progresses...

...Maxwell Husband St. Joseph’s University Moral Foundations T/TR 8:30-9:45 “Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice” Abortion is and forever will be a very controversial topic of discussion. It has been debated for years whether it is morally right or wrong. Abortion is a unique subject in that it involves not only morality but also a large amount of theology, emotion, and law. It is also unique because it forces people to choose one side or the other, there is a very small gray area when it comes to this debate, and the side that I will fall on in this essay is the pro-choice side. In this essay I will attempt prove that abortion is not murdering an innocent fetus and that the arguments for pro-choice are stronger than the ones for pro-life. The main point of disagreement between the two sides is what constitutes life, when does human life actually begin? I believe to construct a sound argument this issue must be examined first. I will then go on to cover other various pro-choice points such as a women’s right to choose, the quality of life for the potential child, and the extreme circumstances that will disprove the notion that abortion is morally wrong. As stated in my opening paragraph, the key issue in the case of abortion is determining the status of the fetus in the sense of its humanity. It is my belief that a fetus does not qualify as a human. I agree with Warren when she states that “human being” is a term that is not often distinguished, she suggests that there are two...

...action is caused by external occurrences, thus humans have no free will, and free will, possessing the ability to make our own choices, can somehow interconnect. To clarify, in determinism, a choice is a result of a previous choice that was also caused by a previous choice; it is a chain. This sequence is endless which further vindicates the determinist belief that everything has a cause and is established before a “decision” is even reached. A simple illustration of this is someone entering a coffee shop, debating between ordering a Chai tea or a vanilla latte, and ordering a vanilla latte. Many determinists would say that, resulting from previous actions, it was impossible for the person to choose tea as it was already determined they would choose the latte. As for the free will side of this situation, one would say that even with the same proceedings, the person still possesses the ability to choose to order tea. With every action, this same deliberation exists....

...“We do not possess any genuine freedom to act ethically” Discuss (35 marks) A person who acts ethically is one who will choose to make good decisions, those that are morally right and are good avoiding the wrong decisions which may have negative consequences. We can link the idea of acting ethically with morals, as an ethical person will have a good set of morals, this is because it is our morals that help is to freely decide which decisions to make, and encourage us to act selflessly and ethically. Eventhough, we have the ability to exercise our free will in all manner of ways and make choices, do we always have free will ? I believe freedom to be the ability to make your own choices, which are not influenced by anyone else’s opinions or decisions, when faced with either a difficult or easy decision. Some philosophers believe that our ability to make free choices is an illusion which means that we are not free at all. Others state that there is something else beyond our understanding that may cause our actions to be determined. These theories can be linked to Determinism. Determinism says that there are laws that exist outside of our control that cause the things that happen-laws such as gravity. Scientific laws determine all our actions based on what has happened before. Previous events have consequences that may be determined and which in turn will cause more consequences. This can be linked to Aristotle’s teachings which stated that every action has some sort...

...There are so many books in the world, but wouldn’t the reader of the book rather have chosen a book for themselves, or have had a teacher chosen it? Students should be able to choose the books they read in class. First, they would be more engaged with the book, Second, they would understand the book better, Finally, students would score better on reading tests. Although teachers may choose books that the students would be engaged in, students would be 100% engaged knowing their book of choice is something they will enjoy. If students choose a book that they know they would be interested in, they would enjoy the book and not be weary or bored with the book as if the teacher chose the book. Wouldn’t the reader want to choose a book that just came out and was part of the readers favorite series, or let a teacher choose a book that has never been heard of or know anything...

We divide our memory in three “pieces” the short-term memory and the long-term memory and the sensory memory. This memory model was explained by the researchers Atkinson and Shiffrin 1968. First is the sensory memory, it can memorize things only for a few seconds. The visual system possesses iconic memory for visual stimuli like the shape, the size and the color of an object. Second is the short-term memory, in this case we can store some information for a longer period so that we can be able to use them for example we can memorize a telephone number long enough to dial it and use it, after...

...from learning to start a fire to survive the cold, to the ability to hunt game for food, to the discovery of the vaccine, to the invention of incredibly fast transportation, to the fabrication of Wi-Fi, to the ability to connect to others around the world with a simple device called the iPhone. Without doubt, no other species has come to rival our intelligence and ability to progress and adapt to new environments. The value of a human life is so extraordinary because of the potential of the human intellect. Furthermore, it is because our extensive spectrum of emotions including the ability to empathize for others. This is the ultimate evidence of the greatness of man. Yet the question remains: is it wrong to choose a baby’s life over the life of an animal? Undeniably, animals are not equal to humans however, this doesn’t justify the horrors of animal cruelty that go on in today’s world. In evolutionary terms, we are biologically programmed to choose human life over a life of another species. If we didn’t follow this instinct we never would have been able to evolve. None of the above accomplishments would ever have happened. Likewise, animals that are intelligent don’t consider themselves equal to humans. They also don’t consider their own species above humans. All species value the life of the same species. Furthermore, according to Aristotle’s hierarchy of life only humans have a “rational soul” that gives us the ability to think logically and intellectually. It also allows us...
