...Architecture and the Environment Brigette Tarwater PSY 460 October 4, 2012 Nancy Lees Architecture and the Environment Psychology primarily focuses on the behaviors, thoughts, and emotions of organisms. There are many influences that contribute to these aspects of growth and development in a variety of areas. Not only does the concept and theories of nature versus nurture graduate an individual into the person that they will ultimately form into, but social elements, the environment including architectural surroundings, life experiences and many more fundamental characteristics form the foundation of a human. Research plays an explicit role in the comprehension process to explain the cause and effect of many different scenarios which may surface throughout an individual’s life; the outcome of different supporting roles can potentially support or consequently change the path which an individual may stroll towards throughout that life. The illusion that the comfort of our surroundings or the exhilaration of a new area whether it is a preference as an urban or rural area can cause peace or stress which has been noted in scientists theories and research. There are many different structures that are built in ways to produce peaceful, spiritual, aggressive, zealous, etc. ties causing behaviors to act according to the emotions that are being felt. ...displacement in the position of a celestial body, when viewed along varying lines of sight” (Biography.com Editors). Although he had concrete ideas, he lacked specific evidence that the earth orbited the sun. The Roman Catholic Church was a major criticizer, along with Martin Luther and his supporter Andreas Osiander (Lutheran). A mini biography of Copernicus stated that the church banned his work shortly following his death, and the works were not available until about three decades after his death (BIO). In a paper titled “Tischreden”, written by Luther in retaliation to Copernicus’ first book, Luther challenges the logic of the heliocentric theory, and states that “this fool wants to turn the whole art of astronomy upside down.” Under the influence of Luther, Osiander shared his views on Copernicus. He also claimed the heliocentric theory was an abstract hypothesis, and had absolutely no basis or logic behind it. As well as spreading his opinions through word of mouth, he also added his text to the beginning of Copernicus’ books, leading people to believe Copernicus was disowning his own work, when it reality it was Osiander defying...

...We Alone? The answer to the elusive question: Are we really alone? Still remains shrouded by controversy, mystery and new discoveries. Humans have struggled with the possibility of the existence of intelligent life out there in the galaxy. The developed world has spent billions of dollars in deep space exploration in an endeavor to understand what exactly is out there. People have been fascinated by alien life forms a fact which can be seen in the many successful movies on the subject. The many reported cases of unidentified flying objects that are still a mystery and which have generated conspiracy theories that have fanatical believers (Arnold.112). There are tales of flying saucers and elaborate accounts of encounters with aliens. With all these conspiracies theories, TV shows, movies and alien life form fascination, it hard to decipher the fiction from the reality. E.T. moved movie audiences with a story of friendship between an alien and a human. Star Wars stretched the human imagination and demonstrated the possibility of an enterprise with human and alien life forms out there in the galaxy. The Stargate series adds the concept of time travel and the use of alien technology to defend the earth from hostile aliens. It depicts a complex relationship between humans and aliens in strategic alliances driven by mutual interest and the greed for power and influence on a universal level. Hollywood is dynamic on the issue of aliens because it has cast good aliens such...

...‘Confused and inconsistent.’ How accurate is this assessment of Khrushchev’s foreign policy? Khrushchev's foreign policy throughout his rule is often characterised as “inconsistent” by many historians. Despite outwardly appearing as if he wanted to achieve peaceful relations with the U.S and the West in general, several of Khrushchev’s actions directly contradict this. "There are only two ways- either Peaceful Coexistence or the most destructive war in History. There is no third way." - Khrushchev After the death of Joseph Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev took over in control of the USSR. Khrushchev made multiple efforts to appear to work towards a serious “peaceful co-existence.” Though many of the events which took place during Khrushchev’s leadership brought the world closer to another major war than ever before, Soviet domestic and foreign policy during this time is often regarded as a “thaw” in Cold War tension. From this we can gather that his foreign policy was in fact successful. Not only did he manage to avoid nuclear warfare with the U.S, but he also gave a speech in 1956 where he formally announced a new policy of “destalinisation” - political prisoners were set free, Beria (Stalin’s Chief of Secret Police) was executed, giving up bases in Finland, abandoning vetoing admission of new countries to the UN, allowing greater freedom to satellite states and re conciliating with Tito in 1955. In 1961 Khrushchev declared that the period of 'the dictatorship of the proletariat'...

...International Journal of Communication 6 (2012), 2609–2627 1932–8036/20120005 Mapping the Nation and Security in Global Space: A Comparative Study of Danish, Egyptian, and U.S. Action-Adventure Fans KARIN GWINN WILKINS1 University of Texas at Austin This article explores how being an action-adventure fan resonates with articulations of national identity, attitudes toward other nations, and fear of global terrorism in the United States, Denmark, and Egypt. Action-adventure film relies on global Hollywood production, yet the reception of this genre works quite differently in the cultural contexts of communities and affinities of fans. Being an action-adventure fan appears to bear a close relationship with a tendency to exhibit fear of global terrorism and to conceptualize Americans as heroes, particularly among U.S. audiences. Danish and U.S. fans seem more likely to want to cast Egyptian characters as villains than their non-fan counterparts, whereas Egyptian fans prefer Danish characters to be villains. Limited characterizations in this genre inspire and reinforce the imagined scenarios of fans in which American heroes are justified in crucifying foreign villains. Keywords: action-adventure, political attitudes, United States, Denmark, Egypt This work explores how action-adventure fans based in Egypt, the United States, and Denmark map their own and others’ nations and fear of terrorism through their engagement with action-adventure film. Research on the potential...

...slides) The case study was an experiment to study the dynamics of isolation in long-term space travel by a team of psychologists at Moscow's Institute for Biomedical Problems (IBMP). Within the confines of a replica Mir space station, three international researchers, including a Canadian, Japanese and Austrian participant were isolated with four Russian cosmonauts for 110 days. At the New Year's Eve party, the participants partook in the drinking of vodka, which was allowed by the Russian space agency. What evolved was a series of events which involved violence, sexual harassment, and questionable ethics. A violent fight erupted between two of the cosmonauts, which was resolved quickly. Later, the Russian commander aggressively kissed, twice, the only female participant, Judith Lapierre. All three of the international participants appealed to the IBMP regarding the Russians behaviour, requesting disciplinary action. The experiment ended in controversy as the Russians downplayed the kiss, saying it was a fleeting kiss and blaming an emotional female participant whilst Lapierre claimed sexual harassment. Thus, was it really sexual harassment or a stolen kiss? Or is the question here that the parties involved here had attached different meanings to the same incident. Cultural differences amongst the participants led to the conflict, which were exacerbated by the influence of alcohol. The Russians responded by claiming that ’In the West, some kinds of kissing...

...According to the U.S. Department of State, hip hop is "now the center of a mega music and fashion industry around the world," that crosses social barriers and cuts across racial lines. National Geographic recognizes hip hop as "the world's favorite youth culture" in which "just about every country on the planet seems to have developed its own local rap scene." Through its international travels, hip hop is now considered a “global musical epidemic,” and has diverged from its ethnic roots by way of globalization and localization. Although some non-American rappers may still relate with young black Americans, hip hop now transcends its original culture, and is appealing because it is “custommade to combat the anomie that preys on adolescents wherever nobody knows their name.” Hip hop is attractive in its ability to give a voice to disenfranchised youth in any country, and as music with a message it is a form available to all societies worldwide. From its early spread to Europe and Japan to an almost worldwide acceptance through Asia and South American countries such as Brazil, the musical influence has been global. Hip hop sounds and styles differ from region to region, but there is also a lot of crossbreeding. In each separate hip hop scene there is also constant struggle between "old school" hip hop and more localized, newer sounds.Regardless of where it is found, the music often targets local disaffected youth. Hip hop has given people a voice to express themselves,...

...population found, “Of the 232 countries and territories included in this study, 50 are Muslim-majority” (p. 5). The Center also found “While 80% of the world’s Muslims live in countries where Muslims are in the majority, significant numbers – about one-fifth of the world’s Muslim population – live as religious minorities in their home countries” (p. 7). With so many countries adhering to Islam and the growth of the Muslim population here in America and worldwide; how will this affect how non-Islamic countries communicate and interact with Islamic countries and how we communicate right here in the United States? If Muslim fundamentalists were not at the forefront of controversy in the war on terrorism, would Islam be a religion that sparks so much debate? Even before September 11th, there had been much controversy related to Islam. However most of it occurred on foreign soil. With significant bombings and terrorist attacks in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, many Americans were more fearful of travelling abroad, not realizing that such an attack could occur right here at home. Unfortunately it happened; and when it did, due to human nature, we have a propensity to over-generalize and draw conclusions based on the limitations of our ethnocentrism. Terrorists are Muslim. Muslims practice Islam. Therefore anyone who...

...HS-404 Homosexuality in Popular Hindi Cinema Abstract:India is a country with vibrant popular culture. Nowhere is the collective consciousness of the nation probably better essayed than in the cinema, which is viewed with passionate enthusiasm. Taking Popular Hindi Cinema as a mainstay of Indian culture, this article tries to create a link between the depiction of homosexuality in Popular Hindi Cinema and the society. Different viewpoints are looked from and observed in Indian popular culture, such as the non – acceptance of homosexuality by some quarters, the crude stereotyping and the slowly emerging new wave of thought that treats the subject with a compassionate eye, and gives it a humane treatment. Submitted by : Vivek Maheshwary 0800206 INTRODUCTION : Many Bollywood movies have explored various social issues such as child marriage, polygamy, dowry system, casteism and terrorism. However, homosexuality, a taboo subject in Indian society and religion, has yet not been fully explored in Bollywood. “Homosexuality refers to sexual behaviour with or attraction to people of the same sex or to a homosexual orientation.” Gay refers to male homosexuality whereas lesbian refers to female homosexuality. ...plastic bags daily, or one trillion ninety five billion per year, according to China Trade News. (Plastics News) In 1965, Celloplast came up with the design on which all modern plastic shopping bags are based: a tube of plastic sealed at the bottom to allow for the packaging of goods, an open top to insert such items into the bag and handles for convenient carrying. This bag is commonly known as the T-shirt bag or single use plastic shopping bag. By the end of 1985, 75% of U.S. grocery stores carried plastic bags in addition to paper ones, and today, plastic bags have secured more than 80% of the grocery and convenience store market. When Exxon Mobile introduced these bags to the U.S. in the late 1970’s they were immediately met with controversy. Not only were people worried about the environmental impact of the plastic, but suburban shoppers preferred paper bags that would stand upright in the trunks of their cars, while city folk liked the handles on the plastic bags to carry on their walk home. Plastic bags won the minds and hearts of business owners worried about their bottom line. (Petru) Plastic bags are much cheaper to purchase than paper by up to 4 times. The plastic is also waterproof and can hold up to 1000 times its own weight. These bags are made from High Density Polyethylene or type 2 plastic (the same type used for plastic bottles and plastic lumber). To produce these single use shopping bags fossil fuels are used. Petroleum and natural gas are...
