Elia’s main thesis is that Renfrew ignores the condemnable relationship between art collectors and looters in The Cycladic Spirit. Elia begins the article by explaining the historical context of Cycladic figure collections. Originally, collectors and looters rejected Cycladic figures due to them not being aesthetically pleasing like Classical works. However, in the 1950s and 1960s, collectors became interested in acquiring these figures as the modern view of art changed. The rapid demand for figures led to an increase in looting graves and an increase in forgeries (pg. 64). After this explanation, Elia moves on to address the issues with scholars and collectors in studying these figures. First, Elia discusses how scholars will condemn looters,
