Imagine that face-to-face communication did not involve speaking rather using hand signals, body movements and expressions. Although you may associate communication with the spoken word, nonverbal cues can be just as powerful when it comes to sending and receiving information (Cheesebro, 2010). Many of us already communicate this way. These components are all forms of demonstrative communication. The way in which we stand, look at others and respond with our gestures whether we are sending or receiving information are all forms of nonverbal communication. Demonstrative communication happens in our everyday lives even though we don’t notice it. In face-to face interaction, nonverbal communication can say a lot. Effective communication involves more than just understanding the information.
