...This paper will seek to determine why have school shootings become familiar media events. On April 20th 1999, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, two students of Columbine High School, equipped with multiple firearms including explosives went on a killing spree, before committing suicide (Kohn, 2001). Wounding more than 20 people and causing the death of 13 people, the Columbine High School shooting is considered as one of the most important school shootings in history. School shooting is the action in which ‘multiple intentional killings’ are carried out in ‘educational institutions’ by one or more perpetrators (Böckler et al., 2013, p.3). The devastating event not only appeared on newspapers but it has since been adapted into an Oscar-winning...

...How would you feel if someone you love so dearly went to school one day, a place you thought was safe, and never came back? Well, this happened to many. One day the parents of children sent their children to school and never got to say, “goodbye” or “I love you”. Most likely regretting everything they had done or said to their loved one the day before, or what they did not tell them. Although the Columbine High School Shooting was a tragic event in history, society has benefitted by bringing about school security, practicing evacuation procedures during school, and brought awareness to the issue of gun control. The two boys, Dylan Klebold,17, and Eric Harris, 18, single handedly murdered 12 people and injured another 21. Luckily the bombs didn't go off. Which saved many lives, since it was to go off at the time where there would be the highest number of people at the location. ...April Hope The Significance of the Columbine High School Events CRJU 2110 Assignment #2 Introduction: The Columbine High School Shooting Event occurred at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado on April 20, 1999. At the time of the shooting, I was in the seventh grade of junior high school. I can remember thinking for months after this that it could occur anywhere and I was afraid to go to school. This shooting was the most significant shooting in a school in the history of the United States of America. During this incident, two high school seniors planned and carried out a massacre. These two students were Eric Harris (eighteen years old) and Dylan Klebold (seventeen years old). After all was said and done, thirteen people plus Harris and Klebold were dead and twenty-three people were injured. These events showed this nation that schools are no longer safe and that incidents that occur in schools should be dealt with swiftly and harshly. Schools now focus on security, bullying, and response to these type incidents. Topic I – Security A. Zero Tolerance in Schools B. Preventive Measures Topic II- Bullying A. Profiling B. ...Rayvon Tabron 12-31-11 Gun Control English 2a In 1999 more than 28,000 Americans were killed by gunfire (Violence Policy Center, 1999). Looking back that was not that many years ago and people across the world are still feeling the effects from all of the gun violence. Even though the second amendment gives us the right to bear arms it is just not safe enough for people to own guns. People are allowed to own guns legally but must be kept in the homes away from kids, but since houses get broken into all the time guns get stolen. This is a huge issue because now stolen guns can be sold for lower prices in the streets than what they are really worth in the store. The criminal justice career field will help enforce the safety on firearms. Because the amount of illegal guns is on a rise, guns are easily purchased, schools are experiencing massacres, death rate has increase due to gun violence, and firearm safety has been heavily enforced. Individuals all over the United States are able to purchase an unlimited number of handguns at one time. Many of these individuals are gun traffickers who then re-sell these guns, at a profit, to dangerous people who are unable to purchase handguns due to felony conviction or other disqualifying reasons (Prevent Gun Violence, 2011). Not really knowing the amount of illegal guns on the streets, illegal guns are everywhere and can easily be purchased. For example, I recall watching a TV show that was trumpeting the ban on...

...have been cases of school shootings. In particular the Columbine High School Shooting and Virginia Tech Massacre were both influenced by violent video games. In the Columbine High School shooting, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold shot and killed thirteen people and then killed themselves. At Virginia Tech, Seung-Hui Cho shot and killed thirty-three people, including himself, and injured twenty-three others (School 1). Violent video games played a major role in these school shootings because the games were tools used to practice there plan and give them the ideas for the weapons they would use and how they would use them. Harris and Klebold attended Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. When the two teens had planned the attack it was intended for propane tanks to detonate that they left in the cafeteria in duffle bags. “According to the report released by the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office, the tanks contained sufficient explosives power to ‘kill the majority of students’ who would be in the cafeteria for lunch” (Columbine 1). The tanks did not discharge as the boys anticipated. When they came back to the school they soon realized things were not going the way Miller 2 they wanted so they pulled out there guns. The two boys went on a rampage, taunting students and killing without any hesitation. Similar to the Columbine Shooting, Cho...

...The hypodermic needle theory regards the audience as passive and the power of media messages strong and that media influences people to behave in a certain way. The effects debate is the argument that the media has the potential to influence an audience, to affect them in negative ways, and that there is a need to protect people from material which might cause harm of one kind or another. The messages in the media are injected into the audience like a drug, but they don’t notice the effects that it has on them. The effects of messages in the media tend to be associated with bad behavior, and negative actions, especially regarding sex and violence. An example of this is the Sandy Hook Shooting, where the boy’s ruthless actions were blamed on the influence of the game Call of Duty by the New York Times, which he supposedly spent a lot of time playing alone in his basement. The hypodermic needle theory is also known as the hypodermic-syringe model of communications, and is referred to as the magic bullet theory. It implied mass media had a direct, immediate and powerful effect on its audiences. The mass media in the 1940s and 1950s was perceived as a powerful influence on behaviour change, yet according to Katz and Lazarfeld (1955), the model is rooted in 1930s behaviorism and is concerned by many to be obsolete today. The hypodermic needle model suggests that media messages are injected straight into a passive audience which is immediately influenced by the message. The study known...

As one of the first major school shootings, the Columbine High School Massacre prompted a national debate on school security. Since then, many other shootings have happened, including a recent shooting in a high school in Florida. In other words, school security has become a serious issue. Because of recent shootings and attacks, schools have continued debating on whether or not increasing the amount of security is a good idea. Security changes such as uniformed officers, cameras, and check in and out policies, are some of the things being considered. Increasing security, even though...

...Review Bowling for Columbine: -by Kasper Jørgensen Rating: Michael Moore’s documentary “Bowling for Columbine” is inspired by the school massacre at Columbine High School back in 1999. The film explores what Michael Moore suggests could be the reasons behind such a tragedy. An early scene of the movie shows how Michael Moore gets his hands on a hunting rifle, simply by opening a bank account (!) Just before leaving the bank, Moore asks, "Don’t you think it's a little dangerous handing out guns at a bank?" A clear indication of his point of view, so early in the documentary. Michael Moore uses several effects to affect us, the whole setup of the movie is so messy and cleverly cut, that you have to be a true-blood American and blissfully unaware about things around you, not to feel that he has a point with this documentary. He uses the shock effect many times, best illustrated by the video montage of some of the awful American foreign policy decisions. Along with this montage of video footage, the song: What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong is playing, which of course is ironic as hell. His strongest argument for all the gun violence in the U.S.A. is the fear that gets thrown at the Americans, throughout their entire lives, all broadcasted by the media. He also shows the American history, through a hilarious animated movie, with a bullet as the narrator. All in all, if you want a good laugh, try to understand other countries mentality or just want some possible...

...Youth violence in America is an ongoing discussion that has been in the news for quite some time now. Kids are so easily influenced that it is normal to see them in some type of negativity. This matter causes children in our society to engage into violent crimes in school and in their communities. Some say the reason for this is because lack of attention in the homes or parents just not being available for their children. Are these reasonable excuses and why do our kids act in such violent behavior? For many years we try to get our youth involved into extra-curricular activities to stay out of troubles. Sports teams, educational activities, and tutorials can keep children busy when they are not in school. Many factors are mentioned when the media discuss youth violence including: video game interaction, trouble in our schools, and dysfunctional communities. Parents should be aware of signs that their child can be in danger of either committing a crime or being a victim. Something should be done to convince the kids that trouble is so easy to get into but so hard to get out of. The research will continue to grow in the upcoming years to investigate the youth violence and to find ways to keep our children out of trouble. During the teenage years of a child’s life, they are exposed to quite some violence in the media. The main source is video games. ...They feel laws restricting gun use punish honest citizens. They believe that the governments continuously implementation of laws that restrict guns use is unconstitutional. In my opinion, the government should enforce more restrictions on gun use and gun possession to ensure the safety of children and the people in America. I will support my claim with events, incidences, and statistics that prove guns pose a threat to children. Loose restrictions on gun use or gun possession have had a negative effect on the safety of schools. Because of numerous school massacres, parents are no longer assured of their child's safety in school. There have been various cases of school massacres that have led to the death of many children and students in schools. Very popular cases of school massacres include the Sandy Hook Elementary School, The Columbine High school, and the Virginia tech massacre. All these cases illustrate the danger guns pose to children in...

...tall fat kid who goes around terrorizing the other ten year olds. The new aged bully no longer steals your lunch money, pushes you around and calls you names, now it’s far more psychological than it appears. But what are the affects that a bully has on the person that they harass and push around. The story we always hear is the bully will eventually get what’s coming to them and the defenseless kid rides happily off into the sunset. Is that true and is that what really happens? Reports have shown that 77% of students have reported being bullied in school and in fact an estimated 160,000 students miss school each day for the fear of being bullied. When your child comes running home from school upset that one of the bullies at school has been picking on him, as a parent your first initial react could be that your child may just need to ignore him or your other reaction to the situation could be that you’d like to go up to the school and talk with the teacher or principal. The proper way psychologist say you should react to speaking with your child is to try to be empathetic and ask them, “What do you think might help?” This will help make your child feel that everything is fine and that the problem will be addressed and give them a feeling of reassurance. This is the proper way to handle a situation where someone is being bullied, but it’s not always the most likely situation to happen. The majority of kids who are being bullied do not tell anyone that someone is making fun of...

...Delinquency Theories Arache Lotfalian UMUC CCJS 350 Professor Donovan 11/29/2012 CASE STUDY PAPER 2 In the middle class suburban town of Littleton, near Denver Colorado, a 17 year old murderous fantasy is beginning to take shape. Eric Harris and a friend known as “Vulcan” or “V” intend to commit an act so violent that it will secure their place in history. The following is an expert from Harris’s Journal, mastermind behind the Columbine Shooting: “Sometime in April next year, me and “V” will get revenge, kick natural selection up a few notches. If we’ve learned anything about the art of making pipe bombs, we’ll set hundreds of them around roads, bridges, buildings, and gas stations; anything that will cause damage and chaos. It will be like the L.A. riots, Oklahoma City bombings, WWII, Vietnam, Duke and Doom all mixed together. I want to leave a lasting impression on the world.” One year later on April the 20th 1999, Eric Harris and another Columbine student, Dylan Klebold, committed the worst High School massacre in American history. They killed twelve students and one teacher; injured twenty three others and then turned the guns on themselves (Avila, 2000). Immediately following the mass shootings, media, sociologists and criminologists set about the difficult task of discovering the motives of the killers and answering the question of whether or not problems within society allowed this to happen. As early as the day after the shootings, blame had been...

...Is it ethical? Mary Ashley Badgett Communication Ethics November 6, 2013 Violent Video Game Advertising: Is it ethical? Section I: Summary Controversy over violent video games resurfaced in 1999, when two armed high school students instantly became killers of their peers. On April 20, 1999, at a Colorado high school, known as Columbine High, two students Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris opened fire, shooting 20 people and killing 13. The media revealed that Harris and Klebold constantly played violent video games, including “Wolfenstein 3D,” “Doom,” and “Mortal Combat.” Following the allegations of the Columbine case, it was announced that the rapid use of violent video games perhaps caused the tragedy to occur (Columbine Massacre). Is it ethical to advertise video games that display violence and encourage violent behaviors, specifically on television networks such as Nick and Cartoon Network, channels subjected to children? According to the Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, advertising has a pervasive influence on children and adolescents. Per year, young people on an average view more than 40,000 ads on television alone, not including the types of advertising one could be exposed to in magazines, on the internet, or in school. “Video games carry ratings, and supposedly no one under 16 is able to buy a "mature" game, but the Federal Trade Commission found more than two-thirds of underage teens could buy such violent video games (The Christian...

It based on 1999 Columbine High School massacre, and two students murdered 13 student and teacher. Students who experienced that massacre would fear people who have similar personality with two murderers, even though they survived. They would never forget that place and moment. Moreover, similar school shootings happened in past years. The common thing is murderers are extremely interesting in violence things such as game and social media, and have mental problems. They liked to record their plan and to reveal some information before their massacre, but most people would not believe that they were really going to kill somebody. 3.
