Her fairly godmother was glad that Cinderella called her to help her because it is an honor. Her being a fancy lady, who loves to dress and decorate, she started helping her. She told her that when you are getting ready to go to a prom that the first thing you do is to have everything in place. She went ahead and told her that since they don’t seem to have nothing in place that this is time for them to get going. She took her to a beauty supply and bought some shampoo, comb, hair dryer, brush, makeup, deodorant, shave lotion, soap, and toothpaste. After shopping, she took her home. ...This is the very well-known story of a young woman with a wicked stepmother. The young woman was kind and sweet with a gentle nature. But her two stepsisters had their mother’s (wicked stepmother) mannerisms and bad temper. In-turn, the kind young woman (Cinderella) got her kind and gentle nature from her mother, the first wife of the worthy man. The second wife showed her true colors shortly after getting married to the worthy man. The stepmother’s bad temper and wicked ways came out into the open. Cinderella was given very hard tasks around the house to do. After the chores, Cinderella was to sit among the cinders around by the fireplace chimney, from this she was to be known as Cinder-clod. Cinderella also had to sleep on a wretched mattress in a garret on the top of the house. Even though Cinderella was a pretty girl, her wretched clothes still did not prevented her from being hundreds of times more beautiful than her stepsisters. Plus her stepsisters had resplendent garments. In this classic story, I had originally forgotten it to the point that all I reread in the packet was mostly new to me. But after being familiarized with it, this wonderful story stored in memory came back in full force. When the king’s son (the prince) gave a ball, he invited all the higher up people. The two mean stepsisters of Cinderella were invited, but not her. What I found mean and reprehensible was the fact that Cinderella had went over the two meanies linen and ironed out their ruffles so they...

...class (peasants) triumphing over the higher class (nobles). In their original versions, most folk tales are not children's stories because of the violent nature of the story. Most folk tales come from true stories with tragic endings or violent and horrific events. For example, the “humpty dumpty” story was about a man who tried to commit suicide several times and succeed at the end. Also the “little red riding hood” story masked the ending of little red riding hood falling victim to a rapist. Unlike a folk tale which has cultural background, a fairy tale involves magic and fantasy. Examples of fairy tales are, “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, “Beauty and the beast”, and Disney’s “Cinderella”. Usually fairy tales include fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, giants, gnomes, and talking animals. Since folktales usually mirror the values and culture of the society from which they originated, a fairy tale can be a folk tale. In essence a fairy tale can also be a subgenre or genre of a folktale. Up until 1450 folktales were passed on orally, so not all folktales were the same. Because Folktales have been told by so many different people there were many different versions. In 1450 the printing press was invented and the folk stories were written in books. People around the world began to put more of their efforts in recording their cultural history by collecting regional folktales into books. That’s how our wonderful folktales from the 17, 18th, and 19th centuries emerged. There are three...

...Great Expectations and Fairy tales Tolkien describes the facets which are necessary in a good fairy tales as fantasy, recovery, escape, and consolation - recovery from deep despair, escape from some great danger, but most of all, consolation. Speak- ing of the happy ending, all complete fairy stories must have itHowever fantastic or terrible the adventure, it can give to child or man that hears it,a catch of breath, a beat and lifting of the heart near to tears. (Uses of Enchantment, pg.143) Great Expectations shares many of the conventions of fairy tales. The one dimensional characters, the use of repetition, and the evil women seem to make the similarities strikingly strong. However, are they strong enough to conclude that it is indeed a fairy tale? It can not be ignored that it also falls short on some important areas, such as the traditional fairy tale ending. Is there enough evidence to classify it either way? Fairy tales have characters of complete good or complete evil. There are no characters who posses both of these qualities. In reading Great Expectations it is plain to see that there is indeed total goodness and total evil. This can be seen in many of the characters. There is no goodness to be found in Orlick. He plays the role of the bully. His hot temper results in the near death of Mrs. Joe and in the near death of Pip. Compeyson is another who has no goodness to be found in him. He is full of evil and hate. It was said that "He had no more heart than...
