...Sixteen years after a sixteen-year-old wrote this book, Francis Ford Coppola turned this novel into a movie. The book is a coming-of-age novel, but the movie focuses on the characters' loss of innocence. The movie follows the story line very closely. The reader is only told that this story takes place in the southwest, but the movie places it in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the year 1966. It also changes the conflict from the East Side versus the West side to the northside versus the southside. This minor directional change was probably made due to the relative time proximity to the musical West Side Story, which won the best picture Academy Award in l961. However, as with all movies, character insight that is critical to understanding the story is lost when the format goes from the written word to the screen. Ponyboy is telling us the story, the same as in the book, but the 91-minute film only glosses over many character relationships. With the exception of Ponyboy, the viewer misses out on knowing most of the novel's characters. ...in their genes (positivists theory). In 1897 Durkheim in concentrated his efforts to understand society and was investigating social facts. In his book Suicide (1897) Durkheim explained the anomie concept where he outlined the causes of suicide and described a condition or malaise in individuals, characterized by an absence or diminution of standards or values and an associated feeling of alienation and purposelessness. According to Thompson 1984, Durkheim felt that his empirical study of suicide had discovered the structural forces that caused anomie and egoism, and these forces were natural results of the decline of mechanical solidarity and the slow rise of organic solidarity due to the division of labour and industrialism. Also of importance was Durkheim's discovery that these forces affected all social classes. A major figure in the development of Criminal theories is Robert K. Merton. He introduced his social theory of deviance first in 1938 and extended and revised it in 1957. Merton argued that individuals in different social class positions in the social structure do not possess the same opportunity of realizing the shared values of success, and this situation generates deviance in terms of an individual’s adaptation to the goal of success. He went on to identify social class as casual factor in the generation of deviance (Newburn, 2007). Merton believed that conformity leads to crime and deviance. This is the opposite of Durkheim’s conception of Anomie where he suggests...

...1.) Why do you want to join the Urban Honors College at Portland State University? I have always been a student who enjoys being challenged, and I want to continue to challenge myself in college. During high school, stretching my abilities meant taking AP and honors classes. At Portland State University, the Urban Honors College would be ideal for me to continue this pattern of participation in advanced academics. Additionally, the closer-knit atmosphere that the Honors College perpetuates is hard to find at many larger universities. I believe I would benefit from participating in the academic community that this fosters. Moreover, the combination of research opportunities and internships offered through the Honors College would be valuable for my research-oriented major, Environmental Science. Overall, I think I would be a good fit for the Urban Honors College at PSU and would like to continue challenging myself academically through its rigorous program and educational opportunities. 2.)...

...Teen Mothers Overcome Challenges Latasha Pressley ENG/147 11/02/2015 Jennifer Fielder Teen Mothers Overcome Challenges Do you remember how you were in high school? Where you mature or where you still oblivious to the hardships of life? Could you have raised a child and continued to finish your education? These are questions that teenage mothers have to answer in a very short time when they are told they are pregnant. Teen pregnancy is a topic that is a concern in many family homes all across America. The biggest issue that teen mothers encounter is the lack of encouragement and the willingness to tell them they are not fit to be good parents from almost everyone around them. Despite the many challenges teen mothers face they are capable of being good parents if they have a support system, counseling and a proper education. As a teen parent, it is merely impossible to overcome the many challenges that are faced without a strong support system. Teen parents are considered outsiders in society and are often shunned and bullied by their peers and family members. Imagine discovering you are going to be a parent in the middle of your adolescence and immediately following the news you are ridiculed by mostly everyone around. One form of support can be the support that is provided by the government. As a teen mother it is important to have medical insurance. Medical insurance is provided by the government and can help not only the baby, but also, the mother. Utilizing free...

...At twenty-three, Carly Fiorina had dropped out of UCLA Law School with no plans about what she wanted to do with her future. However, almost twenty-two years later, she became president and CEO of Hewlett-Packard Company - the first woman CEO of a Fortune 20 company. She was given a mandate by HP’s board of directors to “shake things up” and was later named the "Most Powerful Woman in Business" by Fortune magazine. Prior to joining HP, Fiorina spent nearly twenty years at AT&T and Lucent Technologies, where she held a number of senior leadership positions (Cara Carleton Fiorina. (2014). In 1999, Hewlett-Packard hired Carly Fiorina, former senior executive of Lucent Technologies, as its Chief Executive Officer. Carly brought nearly twenty years of knowledge and expertise in sales and marketing to the company, which was seeking to reverse a declining market position relative to its competitors such as Apple. Her successes included recreating HP's image from that of an ordinary printer manufacturer to one as a supplier of a variety of Internet products. Fiorina overcame a number of challenging hurdles in undertaking the merger of HP with Compaq Computer Corporation, while enduring the public-relations uproar associated with a proxy fight initiated by the Hewlett family, who strenuously objected to the acquisition of Compaq. She bolstered HP's image as a state of the art American engineering company while taking the company into what was becoming known as the Internet Age. However...

...“The Vice-President of the US has no real importance, only potential importance as the next president.” How far do you agree with the view? The executive is the core of the government, where policy is formed and executed. In the USA there is a presidential executive, providing the political leadership of the country. The role of the president is outlined in Article 2. All executive power is vested in one president, elected separately from Congress with his own mandate. It is a single-person executive and president’s cabinet has no constitutionally derived power or electoral mandate, and the president may or may not seek their advice when making decisions (unlike the “cabinet government” in the UK, which is a plural executive drawn from Parliament). Although the president does have enumerated powers, more media attention than the Vice President and more overall power in the executive, the Vice President has more importance than just potentially becoming the next president. The president has formal enumerated powers, which makes him more important than the vice president who is elected under him. The president is chief executive and executive power is only given to the president, rather than shared between the president and the vice president. The executive branch is under presidential control and he is responsible for the federal budget, setting out and implementing the policy agenda for the USA. The executive powers also include the power of patronage and pardon. For example...

...QUESTION 1(a) WHAT IS STRATEGIC PLANNING? 1(b) USING ILLUSTRATIONS, DISCUSS THE BASIC STRATEGIC PLANNING MODEL. To meet the many demands of performing their functions, managers assume many roles in management. Management is one of the important human activities and has critical impact on life, growth, development or destruction of an organization. In an organization, managers with any rank or status should understand their basic duties, that is, managers would not be able to perform their duties unless they are aware of their managerial roles. In this paper, the terms management, roles and organization will be defined, management’s research history will be briefly looked at and then Henry Mintzberg’s ten managerial roles will be discussed. Stoner(1992:4), define management as, “the process of planning, organizing, leading and controlling the work of organization members and using all available organizational resources to reach stated organizational goals.” McShane and Steen(2009) define management as a process of assembling and using sets of resources in a goal-directed manner to accomplish tasks in an organizational setting. Therefore it can be said that management is what managers do, it is not passive, but an activity that involves coordinating and overseeing the work activities of others so that their activities are completed efficiently and effectively in achieving the organizational goals. According to Mintzberg(1973) cited...

...I am a white, healthy young woman of 20 from a middle class, single-parent, Catholic religious background. I am a lesbian. Dominelli (2002) imposes that identity is formed through processes that are rooted in a person’s sense of self of who they want to be, and draws upon group or collective identities depicted in their cultural components, which are socially used to define or specify a way of life or being. My social location is easily identifiable as a white female however, due to the dominance of white supremacy, I am not judged by my racial background much like a woman of “color” may be. These distortions on sexism provide awareness, that oppression is not only in terms of sex and in our patriarchal power system, white privilege is a benefit. Social Identity Although sexism is a problem in society, I do not suffer the same oppression faced by women of color. Lorde (1990), discusses the impacts of this built-in-privilege of whiteness and how it forces women of color to become an outsider. As a Catholic woman, I am faced with a similar power relation by identifying as a lesbian in my community, which is neither considered the societal norm nor accepted by the church. This disadvantage I face allows me to be socially aware of the impacts oppression has in society and agree with Mullaly (2002) who states that oppression “assumes a ‘fixed identity’ on the part of both oppressors and oppressed – that the world is divided into two groups and people belong in either one, but...

Haiti, a name that means "mountainous country," is derived from the language of the Taino Indians who inhabited the island before European colonization. After independence in 1804, the name was adopted by the military generals, many of them former slaves, who expelled the French and took possession of the colony then known as Saint Domingue. In 2000, 95 percent of the population was of African descent, and the remaining 5 percent mulatto and white. Some wealthy citizens think of themselves as French, but most residents...

...female beauty are exceedingly prevalent and constantly managed and reproduced. These ideologies carry with them the notion that in order to obtain ideal female beauty one must be very thin, young, have long hair, and wear expensive or revealing clothing (Stern, 2004). In addition to this there is also a raced definition of beauty, which predominates Western popular culture and dictates that White women with light hair and eye color can only attain true beauty. By looking closely at fashion magazines, television shows, movies and advertisements it is easy to see how Asian, Black and Latina women are underrepresented and misrepresented; and more importantly beauty is not typically associated with these and other nonwhite races. The power and importance of popular culture in today’s society has further supported beauty ideologies that are racialized. Feminist and cultural scholars have often...

... A competitive advantage can be gained by offering the consumer a greater value than the competitors, such as by offering lower prices or providing quality services or other benefits that justify a higher price. The strongest competitive advantage is a strategy that that cannot be imitated by other companies”. One of these sources of completive advantage for a company or country is Labor cost. Hiring and training better people than the competitor can become an immeasurable competitive advantage for a company. A company's employees are often overlooked, but should be given careful consideration. This human resource-based advantage is difficult for a competitor to imitate because the source of the advantage may not be very apparent to an outsider. If the company can achieve this and still keep its cost down, it will have a competitive advantage over its rival. Citing the China price, Publisher weekly states, “Dreaded by competitors, the China price has become the lowest price possible, the hallmark of China's incredibly cheap, ubiquitous manufacturers”. UC Berkeley in its study, Living Wage Policy and Wal-Mart states, and another important question to address is how a $10 per hour minimum wage would impact consumer prices charged by Wal-Mart. It is not necessarily the case that Wal-Mart would pass on the total cost of a wage increase to its shoppers through higher prices. Part of the cost could be absorbed through accepting a lower profit margin; leveling or reducing management...
