...Christina Diaz Due Monday 24, 2013 Rough Draft People spend their lives searching for happiness. Some find happiness in the company of family or friends. Other people find happiness in material possesions. And many others consider finding true love the ultimate happiness. Everyone is on their spiritual quest to find it, and sometimes, when they find happiness they do not know how to handle it. In Anton Chekov’s short story “The Lady with the Pet Dog,” Chekov let’s us into the mind of the character Dmitry Gurov as he seeks to compensate his unhappy life in his many affairs with women. In one of his many affairs with Anna Sergeyevna we see how Dmitry changes his views and attitude as he falls in love. In the beginning of “The Lady with the Pet Dog,” the character Dmitry Gurov is an unhappy narcissistic and a misogynist who is easily bored with women and his lover Anna Sergeyevna. By the end of the story, however, he changes his views of Anna when he realizes he loves her. Before meeting Anna, Dmitry is displayed in an unflattering manner. He is very unhappy with his life and marriage even though his wife was described as “a tall, erect woman with dark eyebrows, stately and dignified and, as she said of herself, intellectual” (156). She seemed like a great woman with beauty and intelligence, yet, he was still dissatisfied, “he privately considered her of limited intelligence, narrow-minded, dowdy, was afraid of her, and did not like to be home” (156). Dmitry is very critical...

...A tale of a love affair, a secret romance between two adulterous spouses and secret meetings, both the original and retelling of “The Lady with the Pet Dog” demonstrate the decisions and actions of two unhappily married persons who meet haphazardly and immediately fall in love. The plot and resolution of the two versions are identical:the love affair between the two lovers resulting in the couple discovering their love for one another, but the emotions and tone of the stories contrast solely based on the point of view perceived. In Chekhov’s version, Gurov is a man who can no longer relate to his wife and loses interest and faith in his marriage. He consistently belittles his wife and condemns her as “of limited intelligence,narrow-minded,...

...Absolutely, love is a very needed and beautiful feeling. But social life imposes on human sort of limitations and restrictions, especially in Russia, at the time when the story “Lady with a Pet Dog’ was created by a famous Russian author A.P. Chekhov in 1899, were very strong patriarchal ideas of love and marriage. It used to be normal to marry and marry not for love but for any "reasonable price" or by agreement between the parents. The composition takes place at the resort called Yalta, and the romance between two Chekhov’s protagonists seems to be just a regular short affair during the holiday, where married people find each other on the one purpose: for a few minutes to forget everyday worries and feel a bit happier....

...Frequently we see a struggle for control within relationships as in relationships there are both subtle and overt ways in which partners seek to exercise control.According to Kate Chopin, relationships reduced to one person’s will controlling another, or sometimes the internal struggle is internal between one person’s conflicting desires. As such it is my intention to examine [Chekhov's] “ The lady with the pet dog” and [Faulkner’s] “A Rose for Emily” and to highlight how control is exercised by the protagonist in both pieces. Anton Chekhov wrote a short story in 1899, entitled "The Lady with the Pet Dog." It depicts an affair involving Anna and Gurov. The story occurs in a Russian town called Yalta. At the beginning of the story, Gurov is "pushed" into having affairs; just as he was pushed...

...October 31, 2012 Point of View The short story, The Lady with the Pet Dog, written by Anton Chekhov is narrated in the omniscient, third person style. “From this point of view, the narrator can move from place to place and pass back and forth through time” (136). Also, “this narrator can report the characters’ thoughts and feelings aw well as what they say and do” (136). The all knowing speaker of this story tells us, the readers, all about the whirl wind affair of Dmitry Dmitrich Gurov and Anna Sergeyevna in such a way that we can draw our own conclusions about their characters. The narrator, who plays no character part in this story, does seem to know everything about the lovebirds. S/he also explains each character’s personality and quips portions of their conversations. The conversations that we are told about give the reader insight into the feelings of Dmitry and Anna. We learn about their comings and goings from the narrator. In Yalta, the narrator tells us of the many social scenes like the esplanade, confectionery shop and a public garden. The narrator sees into the romantic situations of Dmitry and Anna’s hotel room encounters and the private conversations that also welcome the reader into the relationship. The pain and restraints of each character’s home and life are addresses by the narrator also. Whether ensconced in safe houses and relationships or free to roam while on vacation the reader learns it all from the narrator. The point of view of this...

The veterinarian, Dr. Cathy Langston, explained that Lady was suffering from a chronic kidney failure and suggested dialysis to buy her time to see if a candidate for transplant was obtainable. ...Bilger reports that American spending on pets is extremely high. He is surely right about spending on pets being high because, as Bilger may know, studies and statistics have shown us that Americans are spending upwards of $47,000,000,000 a year on their pets. Just as he implies with his article, Spending on our pets has gotten way out of control. Pet owners spend frivolously on their pets buying them pedicures, expensive brand name clothes, over the top procedures, etc. A pet can not even understand the concept of money or value of the things they have, they could care less. Steven Wise, an animal-rights attorney, categorized the animal kingdom into a Four Tier hierarchy of ascending Intelligence. In these categories dogs and cats fell into...

...“The struggle you go through today will give you the strength you need for tomorrow” It was 6:00 me and my brother were watching TV and not doing much. Our dad offered us to go on a walk with him and our dog Sandi but we both replied with a simple shake of our heads and kept watching TV. I took quick a glance out my window to check on my dad then saw my dad and dog strolling along the sidewalk so I kept watching TV. Then heard a small bark but it didn’t really bother me, but then I heard someone scream. “AHHH” get it away” the lady screamed with fear in her voice. At first I just laughed a little but then I saw my brother with his eyes straight at me and his eyebrows moved down giving me a stern look like saying “Conor this isn’t a joke!” and I soon after figured out that this really wasn’t a joke because I looked out the window and saw one of the most horrific sights ever…....

...Some people think dog breeding is irresponsible and the reason homeless pets suffer in shelters. Let me tell you about my canine mentor, Roxanne LaPaglia, owner of internationally known, Blazin's Bullmastiffs kennel. Roxanne practices responsible breeding programs, educates new owners about the breed and shows Bullmastiffs competitively in American Kennel Club events. Her program catches attention in Dog Fancy magazine during the 1980’s, as she participates nationally, with Bullmastiff organizations throughout the United States. She is known as a tough lady to buy a puppy from. Unfortunately, Roxanne left our world March 11, 2015, however, her legacy continues (Zellman). Roxanne, always shows a competitive spirit throughout her life. In her youth, she won beauty pageants, and attracting further attention as a fire baton twirler, then expressing her natural beauty and competitive nature as a print work model (Zellman). Her breeding program begins in the 1980’s originating with Great Danes. The exclusivity and enormous physique of the Bullmastiff becomes an attraction for Roxanne. As a result, she began showing her first Bullmastiff, titling the dog with a championship through the American Kennel Club. Competing and showing a dog easily outweighing her by...

...Good morning to my teacher and all my friends. Today I'm here to talk about my favourite pet.My favorite pet would have to be my dog Happy. When I got him I was 11 or 12. I don’t remember the day that well. But I do remember seeing her. A lady was letting puppies out of their cages to let me see them. I remember a poodle walking down the hallway. When I said no the lady took it back and let Happy out. Happy came running down the hall. His furry white ears bouncing up and down the whole way. I knew he was the one. Colour of his coat is white. He has big eyes. He looks energetic and cute. As I grew I realized that dogs (and all animals) need a lot of caring. Just like we do. Even though animals aren’t us they don’t want to be stuck on a chain tied to a tree all their life. Think about them like you would think of family. Animals also need you in their worst of times. I’ve experienced that. Daisy once had heartworms. She was very skinny. We had to give her one shot at the end of one month, and a month later she had to get another one. A month after that she had her blood tested and was free of heartworms. When I turned 8 I realized how many cats and dogs were at the animal shelter. Lots of them were put to sleep. So for the birthday where I invite my friends, instead of presents I ask them to bring donations for the animal shelter. When we bring the donations to the animal shelter I go and say something to each one. I try to play with a...
