The Skinny on Sweet and Low

More that 20,000 years ago, dating back to cave men, there has been a desire for sweetener. Now in the 20th century there are many technologies and comforts to have that added sweetness without all the calories. Fortunately, a low calorie sweetener was developed called saccharin. Saccharin is the world’s oldest sweetener and the main ingredient in the artificial sweetener Sweet N Low. Sweet N Low has been a favorite to many and used on a daily basis for many of years.
Saccharin was discovered accidently in 1879 by researchers at John Hopkins University. A chemist by the name of Constantin Fahlberg was experimenting with coal tar derivatives and discovered its sweet nature. Saccharin is made up of C7H5NO3S and is an organic compound which means that it’s molecules contain carbon. The chemical make up is the element followed by the number of atoms of each element. Saccharin was produced shortly after it was discovered but was first used mostly for diabetics because it does not cause a spike in blood sugar levels like sugar did. Saccharin grew to be popular during World War I to compensate for sugar shortages. By the 1960’s and 1970’s people dieting began to use saccharin because it was calorie free. Saccharin is used as an additive in many foods especially soda’s, medicines and different candies. It is also available in small packets, in a sugar form like you will find in Sweet N Low. It can be added to baked goods and in regular every day meal preparation that calls for sugar or to sweeten your favorite tea.
There are still safety concerns for those who continue to use saccharin. There have been studies that showed that saccharin combined with cyclamate caused bladder cancer in lab rats. However it was stated in 1997 by the Center for the Science in Public Interest that saccharin be removed from the list of potential carcinogens. It was stated, “In 2000, the National Toxicology Program determined that saccharin should no longer be listed as a potential cancer-causing agent. Federal legislation followed in 2001, removing the requirement for the saccharin warning label” (www.fda.gov) Results from the carcinogenicity studies have not been able to prove with clear evidence that it causes cancer in humans. There are unsupported studies that claim saccharin causes some allergic reactions resulting in headaches, diarrhea and skin irritations. Saccharin should without a doubt be avoided during pregnancy because it can pass through the placenta and absorb into the fetal tissue. Saccharin has been under strict guidelines in regards to health risks and side affects. How does Saccharin compare to the ongoing dilemma of obesity? Studies have shown that rats consuming saccharin in any form compared to regular sugar causes them to eat more due to not being satisfied. In humans there are leptin reactors on the tongue that react to the sweet taste. Therefore when saccharin is eaten in any form it confuses the leptin and makes the person take in more food in other meals as well as slows down the metabolism. An article written by Byron Richards in Wellness Resources stated, “The data clearly indicate that consuming a food sweetened with no-calorie saccharin can lead to greater body-weight gain and adiposity than would consuming the same food sweetened with a higher-calorie sugar.” The calorie intake from other meals cause a person to become over weight. Hormones are a main factor in regulation of the body weight gained or lost. When trying to lose or maintain weight there should be a decrease in the amount of sugar taken in, in any form and calorie intake as well as exercise should be concentrated on in order to lose weight and refrain from obesity. Saccharin is one of the most studied food additives and has been around for many years. It has been proven to be safe for humans in spite of the controversy of diseases caused in rats compared to humans. As one of the five FDA approved artificial sweeteners, saccharin has been chosen to be the safest. With the growing popularity of a low calorie sweetener such as Sweet N Low, it will continue to have a significant role as one of the best artificial sweeteners on the market.
