...Discussion 1 - Examples of exposition 9 9 unread replies. 22 22 replies. As our text explains, the general purpose for expository writing is to explain and explore, and typical examples include: - Essays - Nonfiction articles in journals, magazines, and other periodicals - Business and technical reports - Nonfiction books Other examples of expository writing are all around us as instructions--user guides for software, the text on food packaging, and the text on the dashboard of your car--all these are exposition, because they explain things. These instructions can often be single words (Stop) or short phrases rather than longer discourses. Noticing this helps you to put exposition in perspective as something you encounter every day in multiple different contexts, and it affects your everyday life in ways you generally don't notice. Most people will write expositions at school and at work in the form of reports and essays, and will need to be able to analyze expository works like articles, reports, and books. An understanding of the methods, patterns, and typical strategies for effective explanations will help you both in reading and writing this type of text. For this discussion, please do the following: 1. Find two short examples of expository writing from your personal reading over the past few months. 2. Copy a short quote from each example. 3. Write a short post that includes the quote and a short commentary that provides context for it; where...

...It seems that since Ifemelu arrived in America, problems seemed to follow her. Ifemelu found it difficult to make money to pay for her share of the rent; every job she applied for, she did not get. She told her woes to Obinze, who then offered to send her money. She responded by saying, “How can you be sending me money from Nigeria? It should be the other way around” (178). Regardless, he still sent the money which I think was the beginning of when she felt like she failed him. Desperate for more money, she reluctantly recontacted a tennis coach who was willing to compensate her for sexual favors. However, almost instantly, she regretted her decision, and after the encounter, as her depression became more severe, she began to cut the people...

...Matthew Beringer ELE 3010 Parnell February 21, 2016 The Beach Carrier 1. What is the nature of the product? What are its strengths and weaknesses? The Beach Carrier is a bag that is large enough to carry all the items that one needs for a day at the beach. It is large enough to carry a beach chair, but when empty, it can be folded down to 12x12 square inch for easy and convenient storage. The strengths of the product are that is more affordable than the competitor’s products and the material of the bag is perceived as durable. The weaknesses of the product are that the fluorescent colors lessen the perceived quality of the beach carrier and the size of the bag is far larger than necessary. 2. What are the limitations to the assumptions Ricci has made in determining the market potential? What risks do these present? The assumptions Ricci has made in deterging the market potential have a few limitations that present a risk for the product. The first market share objective stated is “People who use suntan and sunscreen products represent the market for The Beach Carrier”. While this may represent a large market for the product, most people who use sunscreen only use it during the summer months or the hot months. This limits the sales of the product due to the seasonality of the target market. Another limitation is that Ricci has perceived the target market to only be women because “men do not buy bags”. This reduces the potential target market by nearly...

...enact changes based on students’ assessment scores. 4. What is the difference between a.. During my placement, I had very little contact with my parents. The only teacher-parent conference was held in the early fall, long before I even knew about my placement. Additionally, there were little opportunities for parents to be involved in the classroom at all. The only contact I had with parents was through the grading system of skyward emails, and class dojo communications that my teacher and I co-wrote. Throughout the semester, we only contacted parents if there was an issue or something that we needed clarification on. In these instances, parents and guardians only seemed to respond approximately half the time, otherwise our letters, and notes home went unread, or we had no response. In the future, I would want to extend parent communication to address any issues with a student, but also have frequent communication with parents about what their students are doing well. Ergo, parents had little say in any assessment process, and I am unaware of how closely many of the parents/guardians monitored their students achievements in the classroom....

...The Damages of Debt In Tracy King and Ellynne Bannon’s “The Burden of Borrowing: A Proposal for Reducing Student Debt,” they describe the financial difficulties that college students go through. King and Bannon explain the majority of college students accrue large amounts of debt by the time they graduate; the power of the Pell Grant is not what it used to be. “Federal need-base grant aid provides low-income students with access to a higher education. Without this aid, many low-income students take on unmanageable levels of debt burden or forgo a college education altogether (King, 161).” The problem of escalating consumer debt is exacerbated by enticing offers, ease of obtaining credit, retroactive rate increases by credit issuers, and the deceit tactics coupled with rampant consumerism and lack of attention by borrows. Creditor’s see the vulnerability in college students, especially. "I think they try to take advantage of students because they know that they’re kind of scrounging for money," said Benjamin Stewart, a senior political science major. "You have books, you have tuition and parking is outrageously expensive, so it’s easy just to swipe a credit card and put it on there, kind of like magic. But you end up (hurting) yourself in the long run (Students, 1).” Arizona State University campus in Tempe students are constantly pestered with offers to sign up for credit cards. I too, have been enticed by offers of free items just to fill out the application, such as...

...! “Wrong Timings, Mixed Signals, and the Great Wall of China” Have you ever wanted something? And I mean REALLY wanted it? More than wanting that Hogwarts letter to arrive via owl courier service. More than you wanting to somehow unread and “unwatch” the Twilight Saga. But then, the stars just won’t align for you and you feel like you are the only exception to the “happily ever after” everyone is supposedly entitled to? More often than not, these feelings are attributed to troubles of the heart and that’s what we’re going to discuss in this article. DISCLAIMER: Sorry folks but you’re not going to find advice or love wisdom in this article. This is solely meant for ranting and if you’re interested in that, well then, be my guest. ! First order of business: wrong timings. When one is single, the other is taken. When one is ready for something serious, the other just isn’t. One word: FRUSTRATING. This makes you want to go home to mama bear and throw a tantrum then cry afterwards. You actually wish someone would just pop their head in and say, “Oops! We just had a slight mistake in scheduling your lives. We will fix that right up for ya. Here’s a pie! ”. But noooo. Instead, they will tell you, “If you guys are meant to be together, then in the future you will find your way back to each other.” or “In another time, another place, maybe.” and my all-time favorite, “All this is part of God’s great plan for you”. Yes, you appreciate the effort to cheer you up but frankly, it...

...On a day-to-day, business communications must allow and employee to be connected to multiple members of their team. These members must be able to collaborate with each other even when these members have non-traditional schedules and workplaces. Not only must members be able to connect internally but also externally with customers and/or vendors. Members must also be proficient with tools that allow them to create effective business communications. Technology is facilitating access to such communication tools and changing the way businesses communicate. Internal communications are vital to any organization. The most used tools today in business communication today are email and mobile phones. Email is used to connect team members with information and creates documentation of projects being collaborated on by a team. Thru e-mail, a team can communicate in a detailed manner about daily needs from others and update the status of projects or tasks. Mobile phones can connect team members almost immediately. In business the preferred device is a “smart phone.” A smart phone has expanded capabilities aside form making phone calls. These devices give team members’ access to email and text messages. An advantage of text messaging over email is that messages are limited in character count; therefore messages must be more succinct. These tools are a great resource for connecting a few people in an organization, but to connect a larger group other tools exist that are web-based. Intranets...

...Make Customers Come Back - Winning Customer Retention Strategies Customer Retention marketing is a tactically-driven strategy to keep relationships with customers going and increase customer interest. This strategy relies on the study of customer behavior. Here are the basic tenets of a marketer that seeks to increase customer retention: 1. Past and Current customer behavior This is the best predictor of how customers will behave in the future. They are the characteristics marketers should most often look at. Analyzing customer tendencies and trends allows the marketer to anticipate, if not predict, the customers reaction to different situations. The marketer must take note that behavior is action oriented, not a description. For example, being a 35-yearold woman is not a behavior; it’s a demographic characteristic. For example if you know from history that customer A is likely to make a purchase if presented with a discount promotion, then you might want to change your marketing tactics to include promotional selling when approaching this customer. A great deal of observation is needed if you desire to predict your customers’ behavior. This involves a great deal of notetaking as well as watching what reaction the customer has to different situations. 2. Active customers are happy customers Happy customers are retained customers. If your keep your customers involved, they develop a sense of contentment from the fact that they are in control. Marketers will take advantage of this...

...conversations, restocking pantries, making payments, and ranking human beings. The company’s leaders wear zip-up hoodies, of course, and enjoy surfing, yet they are known with reverent remove as the Three Wise Men. It’s serious business—so serious that even the parties are work, since attendance is monitored by your boss—and Eggers emulates this sobriety in his writing, which plods across the corporate campus resentfully. New hire Mae Holland, the novel’s protagonist, bounds forth into the communal ethos of her overlords, embracing her first assignment, answering e-mails that provide a “human experience” to small advertisers. Eggers seems bored by the task—Oh, must we spend another day at the Customer Experience desk, minutiae un-inspected, e-mails unread? He doesn’t want to be in the grind, or even playfully tease it. Disclosure is the story of “The Circle,” yet Eggers hardly tells enough. But even without the searing wit of “1984,” the book is capable of landing on point—when it’s at its most irksome. Where “1984” has the vigilant Police Patrol and Thought Police, “The Circle” has SeeChange and Clarification. Surveillance isn’t a bad word; it’s a gift, even a human right. “I truly believe that if we have no path but the right path, the best path, then that would present a kind of ultimate and all-encompassing relief,” Wise Man Eamon Bailey, standing in for the role of Internet...

...obtain education and knowledge. Where regulations have started to change is the ability of students to jump from school to school without earning his or her Pell Grant disbursement. This guidance describes the Department's efforts to prevent fraud and abuse in the Federal Pell Grant Program by identifying students with unusual enrollment histories and describes how institutions must resolve the resulting ISIR ‘C' codes for students with these enrollment histories (FAP - Dear Colleague Letters; n.d). The government finally saw the abuse and fraud that students were intentionally and unintentionally committing. Many students will just go to a college or a school to get a check or refund. They are not educated in multiple schools on the proper management of the funding or how it works. Although regulation requires written communication on what the funding is for along with authorization. All colleges, schools, and universities are required to have printed or electronic material that is often unread or overlooked by the student due to the inundation of the documents during the registration process. That is why the government requires a student to provide official or unofficial transcripts for review if he or she has attended three different schools within three different financial aid years and received Pell grant funding. This regulation is helping to reduce the number of students not completing programs or abusing the system. Although this is a new regulation, it is a regulation...

...Internet Security Internet security in one of the hottest topics in the e-commerce industry today. Industry experts predict security issues on the Internet are the primary reasons many companies and consumers are hesitant to do business online. If there are security policies or laws they constantly need to be altered because of the changing technology. You are always up for an attack or an intrusion of your own privacy. Survivability is the key. Just the simple task of checking email, browsing, chatrooms, or even shopping can be harmful. ...José Rizal, a Filipino nationalist and medical doctor, conceived the idea of writing a novel that would expose the ills of Philippine society after reading Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. He preferred that the prospective novel express the way Filipino culture was backward, anti-progress, anti-intellectual, and not conducive to the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment. He was then a student of medicine in the Universidad Central de Madrid. In a reunion of Filipinos at the house of his friend Pedro A. Paterno in Madrid on 2 January 1884, Rizal proposed the writing of a novel about the Philippines written by a group of Filipinos. His proposal was unanimously approved by the Filipinos present at the party, among whom were Pedro, Maximino and Antonio Paterno, Graciano López Jaena, Evaristo Aguirre, Eduardo de Lete, Julio Llorente and Valentin Ventura. However, this project did not materialize. The people who agreed to help Rizal with the novel did not write anything. Initially, the novel was planned to cover and describe all phases of Filipino life, but almost everybody wanted to write about women. Rizal even saw his companions spend more time gambling and flirting with Spanish women. Because of this, he pulled out of the plan of co-writing with others and decided to draft the novel alone. Plot Having completed his studies in Europe, young Juan Crisóstomo Ibarra y Magsalin comes back to the Philippines after a 7-year absence. In his honor, Don Santiago delos Santos...

...Public Opinion Quarterly, Vol. 69, No. 2, Summer 2005, pp. 232–245 THE COST-EFFECTIVENESS OF ALTERNATIVE ADVANCE MAILINGS IN A TELEPHONE SURVEY LARRY A. HEMBROFF DEBRA RUSZ Michigan State University ANN RAFFERTY HARRY MCGEE Michigan Department of Community Health NATHANIEL EHRLICH Michigan State University Abstract Advance letters are being used increasingly to combat the decline in response rates, but their effectiveness depends partly on their being read. In the face of the post-9/11 anthrax mailing scare, the Office for Survey Research (OSR) converted to using advance postcards rather than advance letters. Subsequently, the OSR conducted an experiment to test the effectiveness of sending letters, postcards, or nothing to directory-listed numbers selected in a large random digit dial (RDD) telephone survey. In terms of response rates, the results clearly indicate that sending advance letters is more effective than sending postcards, which, in turn, is more effective than sending nothing. A detailed cost-effectiveness evaluation indicates that sending letters actually saves money, despite the increased costs associated with the mailings, compared to sending postcards; sending postcards is also more cost-effective than not sending anything. Introduction Response rates in surveys have been declining for several decades (Groves and Couper 1998; Steeh 1981; Steeh et al. 2001), and the rate of decline increased after the mid-1990s (Curtin, Presser, and Singer 2005; Smith...
