...University of Makati J.P. Rizal Extension, West Rembo, Makati City College of Allied Health Studies Center of Nursing CONTEMPORARY THEORIES OF LEADERSHIP There has been much research compiled that compares the differences of the classic theories of leadership and management versus contemporary style of leadership and management. Both styles have been found to have their unique advantages, depending on the type of organization the theories are being utilized in. In this paper, I will be discussing the key variables needed in a leadership theory to effectively lead and manage others. I will also examine major components of each theory, and how they compare to one another. Finally, I will examine which theory best fits my leadership qualities, and my ability to lead others in an organizational setting. SERVANT LEADERSHIP theory Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and ultimately creates a more just and caring world. While servant leadership is a timeless concept, the phrase “servant leadership” was coined by Robert K. Greenleaf in The Servant as Leader, an essay that he first published in 1970. In that essay, Greenleaf said: “The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because of...

A leader has an ability to see beyond the obstacles and come up with solutions. Different types of leaderships work in different kinds of situations. Different theories have proposed different types of leadership styles. Some of them are related to each other in one way or another. According to the Behavioral theories, the most common types of leadership are as follows (Sullivan & Decker, 2009); * Autocratic leadership: it’s an extreme kind of leadership in which leader exerts authoritative control over the employees or team members, giving them very little room for making suggestions. * Democratic leadership: democratic leader give an opportunity to the team members to participate in the decision making...

...scribes the feminine energy and receptivity part of nursing’s heri- tage, which offers limitless possibilities for a nurse’s self enhancement through an inward spiritual journey, the results of which, in turn, contribute to and facilitate a patient’s self healing. This book invites deep personal/professional reflection on the nurse, the nurse–patient relationship, and the profession’s future direction. Its step-by-step approach guides such reflection from a multi-cultural global perspective. An audience of experienced nurse clinicians and educators will discover practical application of healing presence’s evolutionary link to nursing science and art evident in the practical values guide, the professional development analysis and the leadership develop- ment analysis. In science, the nurse employs the ‘evaluator’ aspect of analytic thought; in art, the nurse ‘interprets’ abstract percep- tions and pattern recognition; and in healing presence, active receptivity permits the nurse to ‘witness’ the patient/person’s inner healing resources. Witnessing implies that the nurse’s own spir- itual journey provides personal knowledge of and belief in the pa- tient’s inner healing resources, and results in expanded conscious awareness, which transcends analysis and perception. This expanded consciousness, essential to healing...

...Virtual Management - a New Business Organization Paradigm JJ Murphy Negotiation Newsletter Calum Coburn Co Ltd ( private paper). This article discusses how traditional organizational management methods and structures are failing to adequately accommodate a complexity-based world view, which is characterized by discontinuous change, hyper competition and the exponential explosion of information science. Virtual organizational management is the needed change in the management paradigm. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This article argues that traditional management methods and structures are failing to adequately accommodate a complexity-based world view, which is characterized by discontinuous change, hyper competition and the exponential explosion of information science and shows how the management paradigm has been updated by the new era of the virtual structures. While the management structures and systems developed by such researchers as Weber, Fayol, Taylor and Drucker in the 19th and 20th centuries established a management paradigm which has endured up to the millennium, these "simple" structures and systems were more suited to a time when competition was slower, less aggressive, and characterized by long periods of stability, and when information science was in its embryonic or primordial stage. It is abundantly clear, however, that the arrival of the 21st Century demands a fundamental rethink, and the development of...

...Leadership Abilities and Traits Leadership Abilities and Traits What type of leader are you? Leadership abilities and traits have been debated many times over the century. The definition of leadership and management are very similar but have some primary differences. To understand leadership qualities and traits one must understand leadership theories, how leadership differs from management and the importance of time management. Leadership Concepts Understanding leadership theories are useful in understanding your style of leadership. There are several different types of leadership theories. The Great Man Theory implies that a leader is born into a leadership role. This theory portrays a person being born into a noble family, and the rights of leadership are inherited. The Trait theories attempt to identify traits that are common among leaders. Situational theories give the situation and the environment important factors in regards to the success of a leader. Other nursing leadership theories are the Contemporary theories. The Contemporary theories combine the situation, the environment, the leader and the followers. Other theories are the Behavioral, the Participative, Contingency, the Quantum, Chaos, the Transactional, and the Transformational Theories. Reviewing the differences and similarities in leadership and management is important in learning leadership concepts. The roles between the two have been widely debated. As a nursing professional, understanding...

...plant that I currently work at. Margaret Wheatley talked about how everything evolves around relationships. She stated that there are no independent entities anywhere at the quantum level. It’s all relationships (London, 2015, p. 1). The chaos theory was discussed and some very valid point were discussed. Wheatley stated that people shy away from chaos. When people gather data if they don’t feel comfortable with their findings they ignore the data and choose an easier path. People feel confused and uncomfortable. Wheatley stated that if you don’t go through a period of confusion you are not learning and challenging yourself. Margaret Wheatley has a depth of knowledge that is clearly demonstrated or showcased during this article. While reading this article I thought about the organization that I currently work at. Margaret Wheatley mentioned autocratic leadership in organizations. This is clearly the leadership style that is displayed on a daily basis is my job. In an autocratic leadership style, the person in charge has total authority and control over decision making ("Autocratic Leadership," 2008, p. 1). Direction is set by individuals and when the performance goals aren’t met employees are scrutinized and talked down to. Sustainable results have been hard to achieve. People are tired of this leadership style and have begun to seek employment elsewhere. These ideas do support the New Business Realities of the 21st Century. There are 5 driving forces. I feel that Margaret...

...Helyear and Lee (2012), suggest redesigning the approach to safety so it includes everyone. Combine the patient safety committee that looks at environmental safety and employee issues into one committee that evaluates and makes recommendations to promote culture of safety. Enact a safe patient-handling program that shows nurses you care about them and their ability to work without the risk of injury as well as protecting patients from improper handling and injury. Make the safety program visible and universal, including all shifts and arenas Managerial changes/ Leadership Strategies Preparing nurse managers for the challenging role of leading the future workforce is going to assume a new look. According to Wieck et al. (2010), the young workforce wants to be led, not managed. Nurse managers need to be mentored to develop and transform management skills into leadership behaviors. They will need support and motivation to effectively communicate their interest in developing staff potential, encouraging staff participation in decision-making, expressing respect for the individual effort and achievement, which were indicated to be desirable for all age groups. Nurse managers must begin to see positive reinforcement on a daily basis as a skill essential to effectively retaining younger staff. Attention to leading the multigenerational workforce must be part of the ongoing development off current nurse managers as well as an essential building block of the orientation of future nurse...

...I feel that my style of leadership most fits the Quantum based theory. Definitely, I don’t favor the traditionalist concept. I see myself as a liaison between, coworkers, patients, family members, physicians and ancillary staff. I would like to always keep in mind, that the focus of our services is to provide quality, proficient healthcare. Thus I acknowledge that I must consult multidisciplinary teams ranging from radiologist, surgeons, physical therapist, to building rapports with immunologist and pulmonologists. I have learned to intertwine my primary focus of one-on-one patient care to being (unofficially) a social worker, financial counselor, educator, and even negotiator. Thus leading me to appreciate all disciples and know that there must be a continuum of communication and cooperation to reach the best outcome. I am a patient advocate, thus I must be a leader in assuring that optimum care is received. It takes a collaboration of devoted team members to build and sustain an infrastructure all the while adjusting daily with change. While leading others, I attempt to emphasize my teams’ strengths, and encourage self- sufficiency and growth. I motivate others to embrace teamwork by punctuating the common goal and taking time out to familiarize oneself with one another to develop a work relationship. In the past, I have been in positions of leadership where I was under micro-management. It did not work at all. However, I have realized that most of my struggles in these positions...

...Leadership Style Faye D. Baker HCS/475 – Leadership and Performance Development December 16, 2013 Shawn Matheson, MBA, LNHA, FACHA Leadership Style Transformational leadership is particularly important in the health care industry in today’s modern world because of past reputations. Some time ago the health care industry went through negative change. The health care industry was known as uncaring and cold toward patients. Transformational leadership style is known as a new effective model which was greatly needed to implement change in every aspect of the health industry. This paper will provide further research information on how transformational leadership style implements new change to the health care industry effectively. Someone Who has a Successful Leadership Style A person who is responsible as transformational leader would be successful because the leadership transforms, inspires, and motivate followers. Transformational leadership emphasizes the importance of interpersonal relationships and how change can become effective within organizations and human services. Transformational leaders focus on desires, values, goal, and emerging motives ( Sullivan and Decker, 2009). This style of leadership goal is to generate employee’s commitment to the vision or ideal rather than themselves as a leader. A successful leader enhances morale, motivation and performance through a various mechanisms, this includes connecting the...

...Von Glinow, pg. 319) is a vignette about the hiring of Clark as the CEO of the Smith Foundation. The Board that hired her is somewhat dysfunctional. She faces many challenges in dealing with the board. Clark has to use her influence, abilities, networking and power to maneuver the board so that she can accomplish the goals she has set for the Smith Foundation. The following is an analysis of the effectiveness of her sources of power and the types of influence she used at the Smith Foundation. 1A. Power Let’s see how “A Model of Power in Organizations” applies to Clark’s situation. We will also identify and discuss both Clark’s sources of power and any contingencies of power. Goltz and Hietapelto say, “In the operant model of power, leadership is defined as being an individual’s skill in using the consequences under his/her direct or indirect control to influence behavior toward goals that will obtain rewards for the unit.” And I think being a good contingency manager is an important attribute of a good leader. Clark used a variety of differing powers to deal with the board, the types of powers she used consisted of legitimate, reward, coercive, expert and referent. Clark used female members of the board with “referent power”, she used this power to influence them by having them identify with her. She used expert power by possessing skills that others valued. Clark had the ability to apply punishment because she controlled government grants that the foundation wanted access...

...Leader, 2012) Leadership refers to the process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in accomplishment of a common task. (Chemers, M., 1997) It is the course of organizing a group of people to attain a common objective. A manager is a person who is in charge of a certain group of tasks, or a certain subset of a company. A manager often has a staff of people who report to him or her. (Definition of Manager, 2012) Management refers to process of getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives using available resources efficiently and effectively. It includes the processes of planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling an organization or effort for the purpose of accomplishing a goal. (Management, 2012) Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard provided us with a clear and concise explanation of the difference between the two terms. These two are different concepts with overlap. Leadership is a broader concept on its own and is not a concept exclusive to or within management. According to them, management is considered to be a special kind of leadership in which the achievement of organizational goals is vital. Leadership is influencing the behavior of someone, whereas Management is setting up an intention and achieving that purpose of that intention. Leadership requires a follower and a leader has to outline out how to influence the follower. Manager has to define a goal and in theory he may do the job...

...Reflective Leadership Plan Donald Graham University of Phoenix Reflective Leadership Plan I have had many leadership courses throughout my life, this course Leadership Theories and Practice has been the most profound for me. The theories and self-assessments have caused me to reflect on my current knowledge and application of leadership style and theories. I have discovered that my skills and mind set as it relates to leadership needs to develop and grow into the person and the leader I wish to be. I have developed the following action plan for the development and improvement of my leadership skills. Leadership Theory The assessment of my current leadership style or theory is the situational approach. Clawson (2006) described a situational leader as one who is concerned about the contextual factors of the nature of work required (p. 386). According to Hersey and Blanchard as quoted by (Clawson, 2006) the situational theory can be identified using a two dimensional grid of task orientation and people orientation. The situational approach used a contingent pattern of task and relations behavior with little evidence that this approached increased the effectiveness of the leader (Yukl, 2006). I have been an action or task orientated leader to this point in my life. I want to become a transformational leader to realize effective leadership. Yukl (2006) described a transformational leader as a leader that affects their followers to make necessary self-sacrifices...

...quality results with its techniques and quick fixes – not effective at all. Paradigm The book talks a lot about paradigm shifts and I remember having to look it up in the dictionary to find the true meaning of it; paradigm meaning: model, theory, perception, assumption, the way we see world. Conditioning affects our perceptions/paradigms (old/young lady drawing example in the book worth checking out). We see the world not as it is but as ‘we are’ through our paradigms. Different people can have different views and still both be correct. The more aware we are of our basic paradigms the more we can examine/test them against reality, listen to others and be open to their perceptions getting a larger picture and far more objective view. Paradigm shifts move us from one way of seeing the world to another. They influence our relationship with others. Not all are good. If we want to make relatively minor changes in our lives we can appropriately focus our attitudes and behaviours, but to make significant quantum change we need to work on our basic paradigms from which our attitudes and behaviours flow. Paradigms are powerful because they create the lens though which we see the world. The power of paradigm shift is the essential power of quantum change whether that shift is instantaneous or a slow and deliberate...
