...STUDY ON THE USE OF CHLORINATED RUBBER PAINT FOR MACHINERY BILGES 1. Introduction:- Maintenance of machinery bilges has always been a challenge to the maintainer due to poor accessibility and unavoidable effects of running machinery such as spillage of cooling sea water, spillage of fuel, spillage of lub oil, high ambient temperature and drainage of hot water below feed quality (in case of steam driven machinery). Coal tar epoxy paint (CTE) has been in use in these bilges. However the expected life of CTE could not be achieved, in many cases, as stringent surface preparation standards (Grit blasting to Sa 2.5) specified for the paint system could not be achieved prior to application of CTE. Creating sufficient accessibility to undertake grit blasting in machinery bilges has also been found to be extremely demanding in terms of time and effort, even during an MR when the engine bearers are thoroughly surveyed. Hence it can be seen that the ideal paint scheme, for machinery bilges, would be one which can accept the standard of surface preparation achievable by means of manual methods, in poor accessibility conditions, typical of a machinery compartment, often with the vessel afloat. Paucity of time required for boxing up of refitted machinery, critical for undocking, often restricts the possibility of undertaking painting in machinery bilges during the docked time. Chlorinated rubber based paint applied by brush has been tried out as an alternative paint system. This...

...PRIMER DESIGN QUIZZ Basing on the properties of primer for PCR process, a primers are designed to satisfy most of the requirements to be a good primer: The forward primer: 5’- VR THGAGTWYTA YRTYRTVG - 3’, the template from nucleotide 399 to 418 The revere primer: 3’- G TGAARTYVCG HACCSKN - 5’, the template from nucleotide 609 - 627 1) The reason for the region chosen: There are two basic reason for the region chosen for primer design: - Firstly, in this region, there are a high similarities of the DNA sequence of 4 organisms. - Secondly, the percentage of G and C are satisfied in the range of 40 - 60%. 2) The forward primer is VR THGAGTWYTA YRTYRTVG and have the direction of 5’ end to 3’ end: 5’- VR THGAGTWYTA YRTYRTVG - 3’ The reverse primer has an opposite direction which is 3’- G TGAARTYVCG HACCSKN - 5’ 3) The ideal length of PCR primer for general application should be between 18 to 24 bp (Dieffenbach, Lowe, & Dveksler, 1993). In reality, if the primer is too short, it will possess low specificity result in non-specific amplification. However, in another case that it is too long, it will decrease the template-binding efficiency at normal annealing temperature due to the high potential of forming secondary structure such as hairpins. The designed primer has the length of 20 bp with forward primer and 18 bp with reverse primer. This length is in the optimal condition for PCR primer. 4) The primers are always specified 5’ to 3’, and in the PCR...

...Primer on Writing an Analytical Essay: If you are at all uncertain how to structure an essay read the following material carefully. Introductory Paragraph: Your first paragraph is the most important part of your essay and should consist of 3 parts: a hook, background, and your thesis: The hook: Grab my attention. Make your first sentence interesting and meaningful Example: If Bill Gates spent $50,000 a minute for the rest of his life, he would still die a wealthy man if he lived for 40 more years. Background: Explain the general issue that you are writing about and the controversy surrounding are assessing, including the title and author’s full name. Example: Many economists lament the growing division of wealth that has marked America in the last two decades. While some this is the basis for America’s economic strength, others feel reversing this trend should be a top priority. In fact, Sue Ackerman in her article “The Rich and the Rest”, suggests that there should be a ten-times rule, whereby the top wage earners could earn no more than tens times the minimum wage. Thesis Statement: This tells me what your position on the topic is as well as how you are going to support it. Example: Her suggestion is ridiculous and should be opposed for three reasons. First of all, it is arbitrary – why should it be 10 times the wealth of the poor and not 8 or 15. Secondly, it is un-American by going against basic...

...general statement that announces what the paragraph is about. By starting a paragraph with a topic sentence, your audience may immediately identify your topic. This construction also helps you, the writer, stay focused on your subject. Consider the following example of an essay introduction: The first sentence is the topic sentence: It tells the readers they will learn about past narratives. The sentences that follow the topic sentence relate to the topic sentence because they provide examples of past narratives. Finally, the last sentence is the thesis of the essay, which expresses the author’s position on the topic and previews what the entire paper is about. You learn more about writing effective introductions later in this course. Supporting Paragraphs Every paragraph after your introduction must be a supporting paragraph. A supporting paragraph supports or proves your thesis. All supporting paragraphs must include a topic sentence. You may then develop the supporting paragraphs within your paper by using one or more of the following methods: • Examples and illustrations • Data, facts, or historical or personal details • A simple story, or narrative • Descriptions • Division and classification • Analysis • Process analysis • Definitions • Cause-effect • Comparison-contrast • Argument The previous paragraph about journals used examples to support the topic sentence. Consider the paragraph...
