...For years, my family and I have saved for a vacation. We have a good sum in our vacation fund and after the past three years of working hard, we deserve some time to relax and enjoy each other. We all have two weeks off in September and are starting to look at where we want to go. Each of us has a place in mind, but no one is committed to any one place. Mainly we want to go somewhere that offers lots of activities to keep us busy, a place we can relax, and somewhere that will add to our family memories. I have researched several popular vacation locations and finally found Bora Bora, one of the islands in the French Polynesian chain, near Tahiti. Bora Bora has all the ingredients for a wonderful family vacation that we will remember the rest of our lives. Bora Bora is known as a popular exotic destination and will be a great location for our vacation. The main requirement for the place I want our family to go for our vacation is that it has a variety of activities so that we can all fill our time with fun. Of course, vacations are supposed to be relaxing, so wherever we go it should be a place that soothes the soul. Bora Bora has all the requirements but is not within our vacation budget, so I did further review on this travel destination in order to show my family this is a once in a lifetime vacation. To meet all of our vacation requirements, I knew the place would have to be tropical. I researched many places including Hawaii and Mexico. Vacations to either one of those...

This was the place where I spent all my childhood, but after the “Mitch” hit nothing was the same. The house in Tegucigalpa, Honduras is a system of changing signs because it has gone from a large family home, a memory making place, to being abandoned zone. The house in Honduras has changed from significantly over the past decade, moving from a small house to a large family friendly space. First, this house was originally made with 5 bedrooms, a huge living room, a enormous kitchen, and dining area, a big backyard and closed front, a big garage, and a little rural...

...Memory works in an odd way. We try to deconstruct and reconstruct memories all of the time in our heads, but it doesn’t often work the way we want it to. Fragments are often missing, things are rearranged or out of place. Time erodes, leaving the memories in a very fragile state. When one goes to recall a specific memory or event, time and time again things and elements are changed whether that be the setting, time, or people involved in the event. There are many different avenues for trying to capture significant events and in turn preserve that moment of time. Whether that be an audio recording or images; such as a drawing, video, or photography. All of these mediums capture the event in their own way but none of them can capture the true...

...My home is where I had some of the best memories of my life. On the day of Thanksgiving we could not prepare our favorite Thanksgiving traditions, so we ordered a pizza from Cost-co. Every past Thanksgiving from what I could remember, was always a massive celebration. All our family came from out of town and across the country to celebrate the Thanksgiving with us. It was one of my favorite holidays, having all our family was together always brought back good memories, but due to our situation, we were not expecting any of our relatives this year. However, when we heard several footsteps rushing through the stairs, we immediately knew who it was. Every single aunt, uncle, and cousin at our door step, everyone was carrying an abundances of food tamales, pozole, and even a turkey. The surprise overwhelmed us with joy. Although we did not any furniture, we...

...I’m from the capital Santo Domingo which has very outgoing people and eye-catching view. The capital is a mixture of Caribbean cultures and a visually enjoyable outdoor museum. Santo Domingo has a hot weather and we can enjoy the beaches all year long. It has become one of the most popular Caribbean tourism destinations. My favorite location is a place near my house called Boca Chica which is the closest beach to my house. Boca Chica runs for 10 kilometers alongside the Caribbean shore; the center stretch of it is kept for casual strolling, family outings and simple sightseeing. You can enjoy ice cream shops and restaurants, plus the nightlife in a number of bars and discos. In the months of February, July and August a lot of different activities happen. The celebration brings with it so much color and tradition from the bright colors of the costumes, the energetic music and animated dancing. In July and August there are two big celebrations one called El Festival del Merengue and Restoration day having live music and different music bands everyday along the Boca Chica Stage. Boca Chica is a treasure. It has been remodeled and includes full work out stations, vendors, chaises to catch a few sun rays. It’s a place to see and be seeing, popular with the tourist and locals. It’s great, safe and secure area to have picnic and family day. The ocean view is beautiful. The beach area, being able to walk bare foot and feel the sand in my feet is wonderful. Watch the waves of...

...Who would you say you are closest to and why? People, places or things can impact you by having done something to you so you can also remember them no matter what. When people, places or things have impacted others, this can make a big or small change to that person. On Thursday, it was sunny with very nice weather that is the day my grandmother moved to the Memory Care Center and moved out of our home. It all started with my grandma talking about how she thought she should move out. I was thinking like there is no way that she was going to move out. We were sitting in our living room, my grandma sitting in a cream colored brown leathery chair. The house had a scent of laundry detergent, Tide. The taste of this lovely place is cinnamon because...

...Whats memory? Memory is the process by which we encode, store, and retrieve information.(APA) Memory has been around for as long as the Earth started maybe even longer. Back in the day we didn't have maps or clocks. They used the sun to tell what time it was, they also used the sun to remember where North, East, South, and West is. Back then they had to remember where they were by land marks. Encoding is the stage in remembering something, storage is saved in memory, and retrieval is the information stored is located and brought to awareness. There are 3 approaches to memory; sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Sensory memory is the initial momentary storage of information, lasting only an instant. (APA) My example for sensory memory is when I watch the TV show, House. When they use a really big medical term it goes away right away and I forget what they said. Short-term memory is memory that holds information for 15 to 25 seconds. An example for short-term memory for me is when I think of something to write for a paper, then when I get to write it down I forget what I was going to write. Long-term memory stores information on a relatively permanent basis although it may be difficult to retrieve. (APA) For my long-term memory example, when I was in 8th grade I had to take a world map test. When it came to remembering where Norway, Sweden, and Finland it wasn't easy because they’re roughly the same size and right next to each other. The way my class and...

...we gain wisdom and understanding in life. Both nature and nurture shape our personalities. Like our personalities, our memory is unique, too. Our memories can be inaccurate due to biases that influence our ability to recall the past. Our memories are so inaccurate that the science of psychology places more emphasis on scientific studies than relying on a person’s memories and personal experience. There are aspects of my personality that have changed as I have gotten older. I no longer see a situation as having happened only one way. I have learned to look at the various perspectives of a situation. I have learned that things are not always what they seem and not to make judgements. When I was younger I had a need to be around my friends to be happy. Now, I no longer feel that need as I have settled down in life and started focusing on raising children and bettering myself. I have noticed that I have more compassion for other people and the situations they find themselves in. I attribute this to life experiences helping me to understand other people. I have become more cautious and tend to take less risks in my older age. I no longer feel a thrill when I speed in a car. I now keep it within four miles of the speed limit. Taking risks are a thing of the past for me. The thrill I once felt is replaced with fear, so I avoid it altogether. Just as aspects of my...

...Memory Project: Application to Learning and Study Habits Erin Halbhuber Baker College Memory Memory is the capability to learn, retain, store and remember information from previous experiences. Memories are accumulated from prior experiences and recollected, which can influence change of behavior or thought. This ability can assist with learning and adapting to new experiences. Short-term memory is information a person is thinking of at that particular instant, it is also known as “working memory” (Morris & Maisto, 2013, p. 187). Short-term memory is the ability to remember and process information at the same time. “Short-term memory acts as a kind of “scratch-pad” for temporary recall of the information which is being processed at any point in time, and has been referred to as the brain’s Post-it note” (Short-Term Memory and Working Memory – Types of Memory – The Human Memory,” n.d.). When trying to recall a telephone number or a small number of items needed at the grocery store, this information is held for “fifteen to twenty-five seconds and is known as short-term memory” (Morris & Maisto, 2013, p. 195). The problem with short term memory is that only minimal amounts of information are remembered and for small periods of time. Long-term memory is information that is relocated from short-term memory, becoming permanent knowledge that can be recalled later. “No matter if it is a memory from 30 seconds ago or from last week; a memory has to be stored...

...Discuss the process of working memory including the areas of the brain associated with short-term memory and encoding. We received information to our amygdala, and then it’s passed to the hippocampus, which is where short-term memories are formed. The hippocampus forms short-term memories by encoding the new information, which means the hippocampus attempts to link the new sensory input to existing memory via pattern seeking (Willis & Mitchell, 2014). For example, an object is round and bounces (new information), balls are round and bounce (existing memory); therefore, this object is a ball. When encoding takes place successfully, neurons in the hippocampus become active and make the new information available as short-term or working memory....

...The Effects of Emotion, Imagery and Negative Feelings on Memory Retrieval My Memory Here I was, at the 2013 U.S. Synchronized Figure Skating Championships, standing in the well-known “kiss and cry” area with my team. We just skated our second program of the competition, the long program, and it felt absolutely incredible. I remember completing each element and taking a deep breath of relief each time knowing we made it through another section of our program without a fall. Our team’s goal this season was a pewter medal, 4th place, and we were moments away from achieving it. The short program, which we skated the night before, was also incredible and it gave us close to a four point lead ahead of the team behind us. All we needed to do was get our scores and celebrate. I remember the image of the stands where our organization’s younger team and our parents stood, cheering and going crazy and waiting for our scores as well. Brooke and Alexis had those silly Shamu whale costumes on in honor of our music to a song from one of the SeaWorld shows. They started doing that silly Shamu hand signal and the rest of our cheering section did it too. I held the hands of two of my teammates, one of them my sister, tighter than I’ve held anything in my life. We stood there, anxious, staring at the screen hanging above the crowd, waiting and waiting for the announcer to come on and our scores to appear. They showed recaps of some of our best moves we performed just a few minutes ago and...

...Writing If I could share one memory with any person, I would share the memory of seeing my older brother’s first improvisational comedy show. I didn’t know it at the time, but this memory would change me as a person and shape my personality forever. I would share this memory with my older brother, since he was in the show and I would want to show him the impact the memory had on me. I would share this memory with him by writing a story about it, since I like to write down my thoughts rather than speak them aloud. The memory of seeing my brother’s first improv show had a major impact on me. I remember it like it was yesterday. I’m sitting in the back row of seats to the stage in the Sadler Center at the college of William and Mary. It’s my brother’s freshman year at William and Mary, was accepted into the IT (Improvisational Theater) comedy group at the college a week ago. People cram into the room, filling all the seats and even standing to see the show. The smell of food from the food court and the sound of people chattering makes the room seem like a carnival. I’m bursting at the seams with excitement to see the show. I’m bouncing around in my seat like a kid in a candy store....

...experience as I spent time in my favorite city. I also feel that it would be relevant to other people as it is a famous city and many people would be interested in visiting it as it has many famous landmarks and buildings. I live in Essex in England, which is 30 minutes away from London by the train. I have visited London many times to visit friends, see the sights and to attend soccer training sessions. I became reasonably emotional; as it was the last time I would see London for many months. I feel that London is an amazing city and that it has so many sites to visit and I have many memories from visiting London. It is also the capital of England and it is one of the biggest cities in the world and it makes you feel like you are in an important place. I visited London with my friend that I have known for many years and we spent the day travelling around our favorite areas of the city. It was a hot summer’s day in July and I remember feeling excited the entire day and looking forward to enjoying the city. We arrived at London Liverpool Street at approximately 11:00 am and then took the tube to Oxford Circus station. We walked around Oxford Circus going into different shops and observing the busy street. I enjoyed the feeling of being able to enjoy the city as I noticed that many people in the street were rushing around and seemed stressed and I felt lucky to be able to enjoy myself and be able to enjoy what I do. Oxford Circus is a famous area in London and it has many classy shops and...

...The Process of Memory Reginald Singleton Student ID: 21978330 February 13, 2015 Essentials of Psychology SSC130 Essay 25072400 You’re at a large gathering where family, friends, and people you are not familiar with are present. Some of the people there you’ve met once or twice before, and as you engage in conversation with them they use your name several times. You on the other hand, can’t recall any of their names, and this causes you much embarrassment. Later you ask yourself, ‘why couldn’t I remember their names, it was less than 6 months ago when we all spent time together playing volleyball?’ The answer to that question might best be found by considering the process by which we encode, amass, and recover information. Based on the three-system approach to memory (Atkinson & Shiffrin, 1968) as information passes through or enters the sensory stage, which is the first step, and repetition is not carried out, this information, such as a person’s name can be lost within a second or so. Therefore, when I relate an example of my personal experience of how I forgot the name of those who I had played a game of volleyball with, I could have helped my chances of remembering by perhaps using their names frequently as we played together. Doing so would have lead to the second stage where information moves into short-term memory. In this stage, information can be stored for about 15 to 25 seconds before forgetting. I could have increased my chances of remembering...
