...Contemporary psychology deals with a vast range of topics; while at the same time looks into human +behavioral patterns and mental processes from the cultural level to the neural level. Psychologists study all matters pertaining to human mental issues that begin right from birth and continue until the death of the person. So, by gaining full understanding of the history of psychology, you will be able to better understand how the individual topics are studied and what has been learned so far. Doubts, Questions at the Beginning Right from the beginning, the study of psychology has been faced with a number of difficult questions. The first question of how is psychology defined established it as a separate science, separate from philosophy and physiology. Other additional questions that psychologists were also faced with throughout the history of the subject were: What issues and topics should the subject of psychology deal with? What methods of research should be used when studying psychology? Should research be used in order to influence education, public policy and other aspects of human behavior? Is psychology a science? Should psychology focus on internal mental processes or on observable behavior? Physiology and Philosophy While psychology did not really emerge as a separate science until the latter half of the 19th century, its initial history can be traced right back to the ancient Greeks. During the 1600's, the famous French philosopher, Rene Descartes, introduced...

...Reflections on Getting Tings Done Getting Things Done-How to make a team work was written by Maurice Hardaker and Bryan K. Ward. The author introduces a technique to get a team to achieve its mission, which is called PQM or Process Quality Management. The PQM session is a two-day meeting of relevant managers to define goals, assume responsibilities and determine actions. The session includes the following steps: (1) The fist step in PQM is to develop a clear understanding of the team’s mission, what its members collectively are paid to do. It is important that the mission statement must be explicit and expressed in short. (2)The second step is to define the subgoals for the mission, which are called the Critical Success Factors or CSFs. Consensus on these aims is vital. In listing the CSFs of the mission, a team should be guided by a necessary-sufficient rule. That is, the CSFs should be necessary and sufficient to accomplish its mission. The list should be a mix of tactical and strategic factor. The maximum number CSFs is eight. (3) The third step is to identify and list what has to be done so that a team can meet its critical success factors. The author recommends an effective approach to list the business processes sufficient to accomplish the goals and assign one owner to hold responsible for each business process. A grid is used to list the CSFs and business processes. Graphing makes priorities clear. (4) The PQM process is never-ending journey that needs follow-through...

...Stella Ting-Toomey and the Face-negotiation theory Face-negotiation theory seeks to explain and understand the roots of conflict in terms of identity management on both individual and cultural level. Face can be defined as “the claimed sense of favorable social self-worth and/or projected other-worth in a public situation” (Ting-Toomey & Kurogi, 1998). Namely the public image of an individual, or group, that their society sees and evaluates is based on cultural norms and values. The concept of face has been used to explain linguistic politeness rituals, apology acts, embarrassment episodes, requesting behaviors, rapport-building, and conflict interactions (Ting-Toomey 2010). Born in Hong Kong, Stella Ting-Toomey (Ph.D., University of Washington) is a professor in the Department of Human Communication Studies, California State University at Fullerton. Being an author and scholar in the field of intercultural communication for over twenty years, Ting-Toomey is the leading researcher on “mindfulness” and “facework” in intercultural communication. The theory and its central issues such as face-saving, face-losing, and face-honoring “resonate with diverse ethnic groups and cultural groups on a global level,” as she says (Rinderle 2002). Currently, her research focuses on testing and fine-tuning the conflict face-negotiation theory and the cultural/ethnic identity negotiation theory. Back in the 1980s, the mainstream, Western-based interpersonal and workplace conflict research literature...

...Shu Ting compares an assembly line to several different things. The first thing that Ting compares an assembly line to is the stars in the sky; the stars form lines in the sky. Ting also compares the trees alongside the road, to an assembly road. As the trees are “standing numb.” One might also say Shu TIng compares the people walking home to an assembly line, as the people walking home are “Stripped of their colour and shape.” These comparisons make the mood of the poem very melancholy, as Shu TIng talks about how day after day, the workers just work. The speaker even admits they’re numb to their own existence. Shu TIng is interpreting Bei Dao’s “All” as a poem that’s saying there’s no hope left. Dao’s “All” is saying that life is pointless, and that “All is fated”...

...out in court. Trying to make the netbooks useable is probably the best choice for Nicholas to handle the current situation, as the other two options will further delay getting the needed correct netbooks and will cost more money. As for Ting, the best way for him to handle the situation would be to provide the best customer service and training to the Medina Office Store, preferably at the lowest cost possible. It appears that Ting knew that Nicholas’s need was for Windows XP compatible netbooks since Ting both spoke with Nicholas directly and read his follow up letter. Legally Ting was correct the netbooks met the requirements of the RFP, but the transaction could be viewed negatively and could have an effect on future business sales. Also Ting had guaranteed that Nicholas would be pleased or given his money back. If Nicholas can document and prove he is not pleased, Ting should follow through with returning Nicholas’s money. Question 2 answer. Nicholas needs to remember the poor communication that got him into the situation of the wrong netbooks and strive to become better at communicating to vendors in the future. Also because this situation is not over with delivery, Nicholas needs to focus on building a “win-win” relationship with Ting. The situation is already tense, but escalating and making the situation more volatile will not be beneficial for...

...facts right on GST BY IVAN LOH SECOND Finance Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah’s special assistant Ting Tai Fook has travelled around the country to give talks about the goods and services tax (GST) to the community. In all his talks, Ting explained extensively about the tax system that would be implemented from April 1 to replace the existing sales and service tax. The Star talks to Ting to get more answers about GST. 1. What was your first impression of the GST before the Government decided to implement it? Ting: I read and knew about GST when it was first mooted by the Government couple of years back. It is also known as Value Added Tax (VAT) and I knew that it was a good system. I think most people are familiar with VAT’s concept which is used overseas. We show the receipt to the Customs officers and get a tax refund. Many other countries around the world have already implemented the GST. 2. What are the biggest misconceptions about the GST? Ting: Most people think that the GST is a new taxation mechanism. They think that the Government would include both the GST and SST together, increasing the people’s burden, which is wrong. GST is not only implemented in developed countries but also other countries. About 160 countries have it. 3. How will GST affect or benefit the people from the lower- and middle-income groups? Ting: The GST will let people in general be more aware about consumerism. With increased awareness, they can make comparisons...

...Face-Negotiation Theory (Conflict) Dr. Stella Ting-Toomey developed the Face Negotiation Theory as a way of describing how people from different cultural backgrounds handle conflict with each other. She bases her theory on two basic concepts: Face (how we want people to see us/our public self image), and Facework (ways of handling conflict). She has identified 7 core assumptions and 5 empirical propositions that when used in tandem illustrate the Face Negotiation Theory as of 2010. A copy of the assumptions and propositions has been attached at the end of this document. Regarding the first concept—Face (also described as self-face concern), to people from the east and some middle-east countries (China, Japan, Egypt, Iran) the concept of face is multi-faceted with its origins going back to the time of Confucius. For them, face involves the feelings of respect, honor, status and connection. The concept of Face is a very serious issue. Infact, under some conditions, it can be a life or death issue. One can save face, give face and have face taken away from them. For people mainly from the west such as the US, face is not a complicated thing--it usually just means the saving of face—we know we have it, and we don’t want to lose it (i.e. embarrassment in front of others). As you can see, there are huge differences in how each culture views the concept of face. This is a prime example of something that can and will cause serious intercultural conflict. To help...
