02) Perceived importance of the election Turnout tends to be strongest when, at a national level, the election is seen as being of special political significance voters don’t see sufficient political reasons to vote. They also feel that the election has no change or little upon the seats already presumed as the leading parties safe seats. Many people are also distracted by busy lifestyles.

03) A perceived more importance of the election so an increased local encouragement for voting by including information concerning how their vote could change something or effect an important national issue. They could also increase media exposure of the MP’s party and their policies so increase awareness amongst society without media over kill as termed because of irrelevant political media coverage which puts people off. The disengagement of younger voters and ethnic minorities is another reason for the loss of votes the percentages show that ethnic minorities and young voters are the two categories failing to vote so they need to be engaged for example presentations leading up to votes in education such as universities and could visit high ethnic minority present areas for personal meetings so the audience can feel more thought about and may be encouraged to vote.

04) British Citizenship has been a topic of debate in Parliament for years and has spread to the national public in light of recent events over the last decade such as terrorism attacks and a define lack of community cohesion causing tensions between races, politics and classes. A review for British citizenship was suggested by Lord Goldsmith in March 2008 and sparked an interesting debate about the credentials of his report. The report made several proposals to modernize the concept of citizenship in the UK. The main recommendations include: developing a new national holiday to "become a focus for shared belonging", a citizenship ceremony for school-leavers to launch them towards "full participation in society", a council tax rebate for people who carry out community volunteer work, a reduction in university fees for those who take part in civic activities, the introduction of "citizenship education", a new scheme where companies would allow staff paid time off to carry out community work, establishing mentoring schemes such as a mentoring relationship between young and old to enhance social cohesion, language loans for new immigrants to pay for English lessons, a mentoring scheme for those aspiring to become British citizens, abolishing residual types of citizenship to make it easier for people to obtain full citizenship. The government were keen on these proposals welcomed by Gordon Brown as the shared view was that British patriotism aka as citizenship enhanced communal integration and cohesion which at a wider scale would increase morale, workforce motivation, reduce costs in law enforcement and rebuilding or recovery caused by tensions in society such as riots and even radical extremist activity. Although Britain boasts national that pride ranks European average it is key to note that more than a third of black Britons don't feel such a sense of attachment and one in 10 don't relate to any of the four national identities of the United Kingdom. This is why the government was anxious to adhere and saw it as a possible solution to National problems. The proposal was opposed as so were ideas of identity cards which were seen a derogative and demining to the individual having to disclose personal information publically also many suggest that these proposals were an attempt to record people and keep an eye on them almost suppressing or even a method to find illegal immigrants and enforce British imperialism.
05) I would strongly agree that patriotism in Britain has definitely became out dated, the changing world where capitalism and dominant ideologies have been influencing British culture majorly. Previously religion had been the prime source that bonded people nowadays communities are more dispersed and segregated and mostly share the view of atheist or antagonist in the new generations. This is evident in society as ethnic minority communities such as Islam and the Muslim faith often congregate together and isolate themselves in their own communities with strong community bonds and those from other ethnicities who do integrate have to change their ways as such to adopt the new culture of the host nation which is not orientated around patriotism. In this age of individualism it seems we have lost collective rights in addition to this European Union, globalisation and internationalism has defined our everyday lives in unifying and creating multi-culture society which has encouraged compromises in British society. Imperialism has been lost and the proposal of swearing allegiances to the Queen has been suggested as a method to counter this but evidently in today’s culture there is ignorance for such acts in young people modelled and manipulated around capitalistic ideas which create individuality. In conclusion there has been a great loss in single nation patriotism in Britain which is evident in other cultures of such as America and this is because the foundation of attitudes values and beliefs being wrongly or misinterpreted or even completely ignored by the newer generations.

Science of Toys

...for ceremonial purposes and as a toy. It is an object in the middle of a cord and can be made to buzz by winding the cord while keeping the end stationary. The object moves by pulling and releasing the tension on the cord. The most common way that it was made was with a large button and some string. History of the toy As children in the 1950's, this was a favorite toy. It is interactive and although it doesn't seem to do much, the hypnotic whirring and the pulling to keep it moving kept us busy for a long time. There are several different kinds of spinning tops. In East Asia the conventional way of spinning the top is by using a string. By the late 16th century, tops like these were being used by adults in Britain. The Museum has a varied collection of spinning tops, humming tops and gyroscopes. A number of optical toys was developed in the early 19th century and it is used as spinning to create moving pictures. One of these is the zoetrope invented in 1834. It consists of a metal drum pierced by a series of thin vertical slots. Paper strips, depicting a moving figure or object, are placed inside. When the child spins the drum and looks through the slots, the pictures appear to move. This is due to the principle of “persistence of vision”; the brain remembers what the eye has seen for a fraction of a second and so “pieces together” the separate pictures. How to make a Button-String Toy? Note: You can make spinner by using either button or bottle cups. 1. Find a large...

Top Girls Facts

...Women are motivated by money and success in Top Girls. This is evident when (2)However, Success for women in The Handmaid Tales is not defined by money but by surviving while keeping their values intact. The Handmaidens “learned to whisper without sound” and “learned to lip read” so that they could “exchange names”. By using the verb “learned” Atwood shows these women capable to acquire knowledge to adapt to situations while doing this together the women exchange pieces of their identity with one another establishing a stronger relationship. (3)In the past women hadn’t had the same freedom they once did. For example the character, Lady Nijo in Act One stated how she “belonged” the Emperor a position she was “brought” up from a “baby”. The word belonged suggests how she is a possession, an object, a thing without feelings to her a woman capable of making her own decisions. It implies it is the purpose of women to serve men; it’s what they’re bred for. The recurring b’s her conveys that she felt angry but there was very little she could do about it.(4) By contrast the women in the future dystopian novel once had freedom before and lost when Gilead came into power. Offred compares the value of the board game Scrabble when it was “once the game of old women”, “Now of course”; the value is “Now it’s different” it “is freedom”. Atwood uses the repetitive “Now” to emphasize how the sight Scrabble is intoxicating Offred and how she longs for freedom. It also demonstrates how the short...

Graham Coxon's a+E

...Frantic riffs, motorik grooves and "perverse sounds" define Blur guitarists eighth solo album... A series of heavy squalls rather than a settled spell of fair weather, Graham Coxon’s eighth solo album travels many miles from the serene, crafted almost-folk of his last release, 2009’s The Spinning Top. That record was a long, themed exercise in sustained mood and atmosphere featuring guests as venerable as Danny Thompson, Martin Carthy and Robyn Hitchcock. In contrast, A+E is short, loud and brattish. It’s also tremendous fun. Driven by some of Coxon’s most innovative and uninhibited guitar playing, A+E’s trump card is its sheer sense of adventure. It’s not an album for lovers of the perfectly turned pop song so much as those who prefer to be bombarded by sonic extremes. The scratchy, angular pop of fizzing opener “Advice” sets the scene: melodic precision makes way for lopsided rhythm, abrasive textures, extemporised experimentation and vintage electronic equipment running riot. Much of the album takes delight in what can only be described as the sound of machinery arguing. The element of chance effectively becomes another instrument. A+E is produced by Ben Hillier, who worked on Blur’s Think Tank and – perhaps more pertinently – Coxon’s second solo album The Golden D. Like that record, A+E is self-played, relatively lo-fi and rhythmically eccentric, making little attempt to ingratiate itself to the listener. The major difference between the two is that this time Coxon generally...

How Far Do You Agree with the View ‘That Women Do Not Possess Innate Maternal Desires’? Compare and Contrast the Presentation of Motherhood in Top Girls with Atwood’s Presentation of Motherhood in the Handmaid’s Tale

...do you agree with the view ‘that women do not possess innate maternal desires’? Compare and contrast the presentation of motherhood in Top Girls with Atwood’s presentation of motherhood in The Handmaid’s Tale It could be argued that women possess innate maternal desires, however some would argue that women are socialised by their environment to be maternal. Churchill’s feminist play ‘Top Girls’ explores the idea of natural maternal instincts through characters such as Joyce and historical figures Lady Nijo and Patient Griselda. ‘Top Girls’ is set during Thatcher’s government and explores the role of motherhood, with an all female cast Churchill uses theatre of alienation and characterisation to constantly keep the audience aware that the play is not realistic, this technique is done purposely so the audience focus less on the plot and more on the political and social issues. Similar to the play, feminist author Atwood explores ideas of motherhood and how women treat each other within society through her cautionary tale; The Handmaid’s Tale, the fictive autobiographic novel presents characters such as Offred, Ofwarren and Serena Joy who all share problems with maternal identity. Most of the women presented in the texts have a desire to be a mother yet the societies they live within prevent them from successfully realising this desire. Top Girls is set in 1979 at the end of the decade and the beginning of Thatcher’s tenure. Marlene is representative of all of Thatcher’s...

Chuck Taylor Past and Future

...other brand has been independent enough to be tied to so many market segments. This paper will provide insight into how Converse and the Chuck Taylor All Star was able to maintain its prominent position in the shoe market for over 100 years, despite competition, an ever changing market, and even bankruptcy. History Of Converse In 1908, Converse began as a rubber shoe company specializing in tennis shoes, rubber boots and automobile tires. The All Star shoe was created in 1917 as a specialized basketball shoe. It was competing with A.G. Spalding, U.S. Rubber, and Goodrich. Spalding invented the basketball as we know it today, and the basketball shoe, which included a rubber sole for traction. Previously, athletes competed in a high top shoe with a leather sole. At this time, the sport of basketball was still primitive and lacked the national prominence it has today. In 1921, Converse brought on Charles “Chuck” H. Taylor as a traveling sales representative to help promote the brand. Chuck was previously a professional basketball player who was looking for an off-season job. He was brought on as an athlete to help improve the shoe. Chuck made design changes for traction and added the ankle patch for extra support. He later went across the nation putting on basketball clinics to teach children the sport of basketball. While on these tours, Chuck would...

Google's Future of Television

...alternative to the traditional cable-set top box. Milo Medin is the vice president of access services at Google. Medin predicts that Android TV, which is Google’s platform for smart televisions, will eventually develop something that allows consumers to avoid having to use current cable boxes. If Google successfully moves ahead with this potential endeavor, Fung says that it will mark another turning point in America’s rapidly changing media landscape. Medin believes that Google, Apple, and Amazon will not be the only companies who will offer their own device that can deliver cable channels. He thinks that there will be a tremendous amount of competition among television manufacturers who will be able to connect their smart televisions directly to cable connections. Medin says that Google has no immediate plans to develop a cable box, but because of a government proposal to crack open the market for set-top boxes, Google has gained interested in this market. Fung states, “The Federal Communications Commission's forthcoming plan would force cable companies to relinquish some control over how cable content is displayed on your TV.” This plan would allow third parties such as Google and Apple to access that content and design new ways to interact with it. Google would also view a new opportunity if the FCC’s proposal were approved. They would get the chance to gather more data on consumers. According to Gung, if Google were to produce its own set-top box, it would gain a new level of...

E-Business

...of dot.com companies in the late 90's to the way we do e-Business in today's market. Dot.com companies were a collection of start up companies selling products or service using the Internet. e-Business on the other hand is opening new avenues of collaboration in the apparel and retail industries, and companies across the supply chain. They proliferated in the late 1990's dot.com boom, a speculative frenzy of investment in Internet and Internet-related technicial stock and enterprises. The name derives from the fact that many of them have the ".com" internet top level domain suffix built into their company name. (Remember why the dot. com companies tanked?) Modell's Sporting Goods is the nation's oldest, family-owned and operated, retailer of sporting goods, sporting attire, for men, women and children wear and brand name athletic footwear. Modells.com (e-Business) currently offers a large collection of products from top name brands in the sporting goods and clothing business and has prospered from its e-business. Modell's has taken full advantage of its e-business opportunity like most of the dot.com companies but survived the rise and fall of the boom. The electronic medium (Internet) has reduced or eliminated many costs associated with doing store front business. For example: investment in real estate and facilities are reduced, and certain administrative costs related to these stores have been eliminated. Report

...A strong organizational culture is one in which there is a deeply held consensus on values, symbols, beliefs, and assumptions among the organization’s people. The first is that people tend to be attracted to work, and more likely to stay in an organization when there is a good fit between their patterns od behaviors, value, and assumptions, and those of the organization. The second is that employees become enculturated as they work in the organization, tending to adopt the behaviors, values, and assumptions of the mainstream organizational culture. A strong organizational culture is not simply characteristic of some organizations, but is an asset that leads to success. Since sales and marketing director noticed that Pace plc had an inflexible and unresponsive organizational culture which was restricting business performance by 2006. The business lacked customer focus, the culture was weak and management was remote to the rest of the business. The Set Top Box industry is highly competitive, and Pace was reliant on only a few key customers. A transformation of the culture and operations of the business, putting the customer at the heart of the business, was needed to make Pace a market leader, being the first to market with the new technologies demanded. Organizational culture change focuses on two of these: artefacts and values. By removal of four of the eight layers of management, it achieved the goal of jointly accountable and close enough to know what they wanted. The...

One Direction vs Big Time Rush

...Just another one-hit-wonder or a true star? One Direction. Nickelodeon wannabe or really committed? Big Time Rush. These are both questions when thinking about these two bands, but both bands have strengths and personalities which allowed them to strive. I really can't say if the pop music in this generation has gotten better or worse, because there are so many posers out there you can't tell who's autotuned and who isn't. At first glance, the bands seem identical, because they both have a fan base populated by girls and they're both boy bands. People also think that these bands' will fade out in a couple of years just like Hannah Montana and But truthfully, their music videos and acting, hit singles, and what they could do to have fans staying happy are completely different. Both One Direction and Big Time Rush are great bands, but both have to work to make it to the top. Originally, the members of One Direction each wanted to be solo artists. Yet if it hadn't been for that twist of fate and the discovery from "X Factor", One Direction wouldn't have been where they are today! Other than music videos, the boy band has no acting experience, yet they have 80 MILLION views on YouTube! The closest this boy band has gotten to acting is when Nickelodeon made their online diaries into a weekly television show as of March 2012. Only one of their singles, "That's What Makes You Beautiful" was on the Billboard Top 100, but that doesn't mean they aren't famous! They have performed on...
