...On Monday, September 29 I went to the Faculty Artist Concert Series on campus. This particular concert was titled “Faculty Showcase”, obviously that means throughout the concert, the faculty at the University of Indianapolis would showcase their particular strengths. The concert was in fact free and open to the public and everyone on campus. I earned L/P credit from attending which meant there were several other students there. The concerts on Monday nights usually only provide four, five or six pieces. All of those pieces are centralized by a theme to govern the concert. Because this concert was a Showcase for the faculty, they got to choose the pieces despite a theme to observe. Therefore, there was a diverse spectrum in the age and genre of all the pieces. In this concert, there were four pieces each representing one or multiple members of the faculty. Each of the pieces were very different in tone, structure, instrumentation and style. The faculty who represented the university was Nemanja Ostoich (guitar), Peter Hansen (double bass), Gregory Martin (piano), Kathleen Hacker (soprano), Tamara Thweatt (flute and alto flute), Larry Powell and Vu Nguyen (trumpet), Darin Sorely (French horn), Blake Schlabach (trombone), and finally Glen Dimick (tuba). Most of the performers were dressed in black. The men either did not wear a tie or wore a solid colored neutral tie. The two women involved in the concert were both wearing a long dark skirt and a dark professional top. Neither...

...Access the importance of any two perennial national festivals in the Caribbean Carnival is Bacchanal! It is an annual celebration of life found in many countries of the world. Carnival is the time when individuals releases themselves and parade with enjoyment of the various Caribbean local art forms. According to Julia Hewitt “in the Caribbean, carnival as a mode of performing resistance, the memory of repression and sacrifice but also of hope, in a sense of becoming other”. “Caribbean festivals embody an aesthetic formally rooted in the early European, African and Asian traditions brought to the West indies between the 15th and 19th centuries, as well as from 20th century publications, broad casts and artistic movements. Caribbean festival arts are evidence of the transformation worked by a creoles aesthetic.” Judith Bettleheim et.al. Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago and Jonkonnu in Jamaica are two perennial festivals in the Caribbean. These festivals have been celebrated in the Caribbean for years and play an integral role in the maintenance and development of the region. Moreover, they contribute significantly to the nation’s social, economic, cultural tourism welfare. The Caribbean has many festivals such as Jonkonnu and Carnival. Jonkonnu has several schools of thoughts but according to Richard Allsopp denotes that Jonkonnu is more likely related to Yoruba word Jonkoliko, one elevated as a figure for fun or disgrace. This seems logical, especially since many of the...

...Nature of Thought Processes University of Phoenix PHL/251 Nature of Thought Processes The brain is one of the most prevalent and studied organism within the human body. The processes of thought and everything around anyone situation is different. Rather a circumstance around a predicament is the same for two individuals; ones perception versus another can be analyzed completely in a different mindset. The way beings project certain situations within their environment can uphold the title of who that being might become in their future. Thinking is what makes functionalism a reality for any being that is living in society. Without the standards set by organisms that have brain cells, life would not be possible and chaos would occur. This is what makes all beings on planet earth individualistic and unique. Also factoring the realization that even twins of any kind, fraternal and even identical may grow up with completely different personalities although they are from the same origin or cell. The nature of thought and how the thinking processes are perceived from one to another within one’s life may vary dramatically. Thinking is mandatory along with necessary to any individual for bettering one to familiarize themselves to any situation that is in front of them. Humans throughout time have acclimated themselves whether they knew it or not. Within the human race, thought is the process of trying to perceive, analyze, and comprehend about a situation. ...Case Study Research Report Christine Y. Harris Grand Canyon University RDG 581 October 12, 2011 Action Research Plan: Effective Interventions for Vocabulary Acquisition in Children of Disadvantaged Backgrounds The Purpose Research suggests that students can be taught phonics skills that are needed to become proficient readers. The use of strategies such as guessing from context, predicting and re-reading may aid, to some extent, with reading comprehension. However, according to Becker (1977), a primary difficulty in developing comprehension in the early years in reading is an inadequate vocabulary. An insufficient vocabulary will have an adverse impact on reading comprehension. E.D.Hirsch states “It is now well accepted that the chief cause of the achievement gaps between socioeconomic groups is a language gap.” The purpose of this research is to determine how explicit instruction using interventions can help close the vocabulary deficits with children from disadvantaged backgrounds The Problem Children of lower socioeconomic backgrounds enter kindergarten with a less extensive vocabulary than those of higher socioeconomic environment. One study showed that three year old children from affluent families had larger vocabularies than children from impoverished families (Hart and Risley, et al 1995). Unfortunately, once the deficit in vocabulary is established, differences in vocabulary knowledge are hard to eliminate. This leads to continued gaps as students...

...concussions and other sports- or recreation-related brain injuries in the country in 2009. That was an increase from 150,000 in 2001 (Cleared to Play). Did you know that high school athletes sustain an estimated 136,000 to 300,000 concussions per year (Moms Team)? How about that 24.7 percent, out of all the patients who were admitted into an emergency department with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), obtained their head injury while playing football (Swarm Interactive)? That is higher than any other sport or activity associated with TBIs. Brain injuries contribute one third of all injury-related deaths in the United States and 75 percent of those injuries are concussions (CDC). It is easy to conclude that head injuries are extremely dangerous and can be easily obtained. For these reasons, people should be informed of how football can be immensely risky to play and how the sport is associated with brain injuries. Numerous retired professional football players now suffer from a degenerative disease called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). This disease is caused by countless hits to the head or body, causing small concussions (ESPN). CTE is a build up of a protein that garrotes brain cells that control one’s emotions, memory, perceptions, and more. As far as we have seen, the disease also causes serious depression, dementia, and memory loss. There is no known cure, but scientists and researchers at UCLA have developed an effective method to determine if someone has CTE and to...

I sincerely hope that you pause and take a minute and reflect on your personal experiences. Television was fairly new and the screens were hardly there at all let alone being 60 inch plasma or LED units. If one’s family splurged or were well heeled they owned a fancy console TV, a huge piece of furniture who’s cabinet was made of very fine finished wood. Some even had flip top record players in them and ultra-fancy ones were super hi-tech stereo units. When Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin or Andy Williams records weren’t playing the TV was on. There was Lucy, The Honeymooners, Milton Berle and Jack Benny. Sunday nights were special and the line-up was exceptional starting around...

...Ryan Gengler EN1320 Cypert Monday, October 14, 2013 Unit 4, Lab 1 Have you ever almost drowned? I have and I’d like to describe the event. Some people may get a little chuckle to a large belly laugh because now that I am safe, I look back and part of it is really funny. Most of it gave me the scare of my life. Anybody who has had a loved one, acquaintance or even themselves almost drowned can relate to the fact that things can go from having fun to a life threatening situation in a matter of seconds. Hopefully, my memory of this event will enlighten someone enough to be a little bit more vigilant when around water. My memory of this event begins at Lake Wakonda near Beloit in north central Kansas. We had just finished a day of boating and the boat was parked at the shore where we had made camp. My dad, brother and sister were on shore huddled around the camp fire. Although, I believe my brother was huddling around the fire because he had crashed and burned so much when he was trying to water ski. I think I was about five to seven years old so I can’t remember certain things but I think I had some aunts and uncles there as well. I, however, could never get enough of playing in the water so I was out on a raft in the water. I didn’t think I was out too far because it looked like I was only about five feet passed the boat. As it always is with being that young, looks were a little deceiving and I was either out farther then I thought or there was a wicked drop off under the...
