“The freedom of workers to join together in unions and negotiate with employers, or collective bargaining, is widely recognized as a fundamental human right across the globe. In the United States, this right is protected by the U.S. Constitution and U.S. law and is supported by a majority of Americans” (Bivens, J., et al., 2017). This strategy is used by every union in the United States to, in hope, improve their working conditions and possibly boost common interests of the group. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics wage and salary workers belonging to unions currently sit at 14.8 million as of 2017. That being only 10.7 percent of wage and salary workers. This is drastically low compared to in 1983, this being the first year that …show more content…
This shows the amount of workers unionizing has dropped drastically, not only affecting the worker but also the U.S. economy. While some may say that a union is a so called “labor cartel” and while “unions can sometimes achieve benefits for their members, they harm the overall economy”(Shrek, 2009). While unions actually promote an overall rise of wages, improvement of working conditions, and many other things not only beneficial to the unionized worker. In addition, workers are able to speak up for themselves without the worry of being laid off or possibly released for doing so. In other words, it can give more confidence of job security without loss of benefits or pensions. Lastly, the American economy’s main industries, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis’s data, produce the highest gross domestic product(GDP) and GDP growth. These industries are mainly all unionized. This shows the American economy benefits from unionization, although the overall percentage of unionized workers and companies has decreased …show more content…
Workers are able to speak out about issues and problems in the workplace without a worry of punishment. In other words, job security is a given when one joins a union. It gives one the opportunity to create a better workplace and life for all who labor without the concern of losing a job, pension, or any benefits. All in all, the sense of job security creates a more enticing picture for the worker to venture into the concept of collective bargaining. While as a non union worker could possibly be punished for attempting the same thing. Furthermore, no worker is able to be discriminated for their age, sex, or race. This also means there is no segregation of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, or transgenders.
