Hr Strategy

...Introduction:- Southwest Airlines is the largest airline measured by number of passengers carried each year within the United States. It is also known as a ‘discount airline’ compared with its large rivals in the industry. Rollin King and Herb Kelleher founded Southwest Airlines on June 18, 1971. Its first flights were from Love Field in Dallas to Houston and San Antonio, short hops with no-frills service and a simple fare structure. The airline began with one simple strategy: “If you get your passengers to their destinations when they want to get there, on time, at the lowest possible fares, and make darn sure they have a good time doing it, people will fly your airline.” This approach has been the key to Southwest’s success. Currently, Southwest serves about 60 cities (in 31 states) with 71 million total passengers carried (in 2004) and with a total operating revenue of $6.5 billion. Southwest is traded publicly under the symbol “LUV” on NYSE. The Case:- South West airline who is known for low cost airline was facing completion from other airlines and also called for imitators like Kiwi and Reno Air as well as major airlines like United and Continental. Rhoades an MBA had joined SouthWest airline to transform the so-called people department, because they think that there advantage lies with kind of employees they have. Since its instigation, Southwest has maintained the same strategy by concentrating on flying to airports that are underutilized close in to metropolitan...

...Introduction The intent of this paper it to define critical concepts of strategic planning with Southwest Airlines (SWA) top management and how their organization pursued choices and different strategies to run the business by using superior performance employees that gave them a competitive advantage over their competitors. I will concentrate on the thirteen strategic staffing decisions that are critical for any organization to be successful. I will also emphasis the knowledge, skills, abilities, and others (KSAOs) relative to the staffing process and how the company teaches these skills to the employees. This paper will focus on the success of the employees of the organization through the eyes of its past CEO Herb Kelleher. “We want to show them they’re important to us as who they are, as people. And by the way, one ramp agent - I have not disclosed this - sent me a note one day which I’ve never publicized, and I think you’ll understand why.” He said, “Herb, I finally got it. Your making work fun, and home is work.” (Herb Kelleher 2013) SWA was formed in 1971, to serve the inner cities within Texas but by 1998, it had 24,000 employees and 2,500 flights per day. The business was growing fast and the company worked hard at developing and maintaining a culture that it still emphasizes and instills today; flexibility, family orientation, and fun. Southwest airlines philosophy is about the people. It has been consistently successful with great employees and less than strenuous...

Delta Airlines Marketing

...Title of essay: Exploring Marketing with Delta Airlines as a Case Study Tedlow, Richard S. believes that the history of consumer product marketing in the United States can be divided into three phrases.1 The history of marketing will aid us in understanding the business world today and is thus useful in this essay to explore this in brief before embarking on studying Delta Airlines as a case study to approach the topic of marketing, in the context of the U.S Airline Industry. Phrase 1 is that of fragmentation and this is purely due to logistics reasons, rather than the result of any marketing strategy. This results in transportation of bulky goods from one region to another being relatively expensive and for a consumer product to achieve national distribution, a favorable ratio of weight and bulk to value is required. This phrase happened before the 1880s and the market size is restricted due to a lack of information, and it is characterized by a high margin and low volume. The second phrase of unification is the rise of mass marketing, with high volume and a low margin, which is the direct opposite of the first phrase of fragmentation. The development of this phrase is possible due to firstly, the development of the railroad and the telegraph and secondly, innovations in manufacturing technology. All the above innovations led to a more effective transportation and communication network that lowered the cost of mass marketing products by significant percentages. There is a rise...

Mission Statements

...Criteria of a Good Mission Statement Changing the mission or creating an organization’s first mission statement is a process of gathering ideas and suggestions for the mission and honing them into a short, sharply focused phrase that meets specific criteria. An effective mission statement clearly defines who the customer is and what services and products the business intends to provide. It also serves as a guide for day-to-day operations and as the foundation for future decision-making. The following are criteria for a good mission statement: The Mission Statement is Focuses on Satisfying Customer Needs A mission statement should focused on satisfying customer needs rather than being focused on the product. Products and technologies eventually become outdated, but basic market needs may last forever. A market-oriented mission statement defines the business in terms of satisfying basic customer needs. For examples refer to the following “Market-Oriented Business Definitions” table. (Kotler p.49) The Mission Statement Tells “Who” Our Customers are. (Thompson Strickland, p.30) Who is being satisfied? A company should define the type of customers it wishes to serve. Which customer groups it is targeting. Customer groups are relevant because they indicate the market to be served, the geographic domain to be covered, and the types of buyers the firm is going after. The Mission Statement Explains “What” Customer Needs Our Company is Trying to Satisfy. What customer needs is the...

Leadership

...REGENT UNIVERSITY The Understanding and Practice of ServantLeadership Servant Leadership Research Roundtable – August 2005 Larry C. Spears President & CEO The Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. The best test is: do those served grow as persons; do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? —Robert K. Greenleaf The mightiest of rivers are first fed by many small trickles of water, and an apt way of conveying my belief that the growing number of individuals and organizations practicing servant-leadership has increased from a trickle to a river. Servant-leadership is also an expanding river, and one which carries with it a deep current of meaning and passion. The servant-leader concept continues to grow in its influence and impact. In fact, we have witnessed an unparalleled explosion of interest and practice of servant-leadership in the past fifteen years. In many ways, it can truly be said that the times are only now beginning to catch up with Robert Greenleaf’s visionary call to servant-leadership. The idea of servant-leadership, now in its fourth decade as a concept bearing that name, continues to create a quiet revolution in workplaces around the world. This article is intended to provide a broad overview of the growing influence this inspiring...

Strategic management activities transform the static plan into a system that provides strategic performance feedback to decision making and enables the plan to evolve and grow as requirements and other circumstances change (Dess, Gregory G., G.T. Lumpkin and Marilyn L. Taylor, 2005). Our group decided to work upon Etihad Airways, the flag carrier airline for United Arab Emirates. The name ‘Etihad’ is derived from an Arabic word which means ‘union’. In addition to its main activity of passenger transportation, Etihad controls Etihad cargo and holidays. Aside from that, they have stakes in many other airlines as well. Some examples include Air Berlin, Air Seychelles, Jat airways (Serbian national airline) and Virgin...

...knowledge. Management accounting and control systems play a key role in strategic management. While a management control course will typically take strategy as a given, it is important for you to have a reasonable understanding of strategy before we can begin to discuss management control systems or strategic management. This is because a firm’s strategy is the starting point for the design of effective systems of performance measurement and control. Moreover, the word strategy is used in many different ways, reflecting the fact that it consists of multiple facets or dimensions. Progress on understanding the accounting and control issues requires that we share a common understanding of the term and its various dimensions. The purpose of this essay is therefore to provide you with an understanding of strategy, if only at an introductory level. After reading and thinking about the material in this reading you should understand: the vocabulary used in the strategy literature so that you can feel comfortable talking to people about strategy; how choosing a strategy represents an attempt to achieve a fit between the firm and its external or business environment; a firm’s value proposition to its customers; generic value propositions (strategies); Michael Porter’s key principles underlying competitive strategy and how it differs from operational excellence; and the strategic management cycle and a beginning of an appreciation of the role accounting information plays in it (strategic management...
