Qualitative documents to investigate suicide would be favored by interpretivists. These documents are personal to the family and friends of the person who took their own life. They might include suicide notes, emails, texts or personal diary ect.
The strengths of using personal documents is that they are free from the Hawthorn effect because at the time of writing them they were unaware that anyone would be using them for an investigation on suicide. Qualitative documents, will most likely include lots of detail, rather than just statistics. Therefore, the researcher will have a lot of material to study, and get a much clearer idea as to why the individual committed suicide. Interpretivists would like qualitative documents as they are likely to include lots of rich detail which would give the researcher a good chance of finding out why the individual decided to end their life.
However such great details does come with its limitations as so much information means that the sociologists has to look though so much. Not only this but you are going to need plenty of personal documents from lots of different people to be able to spot a pattern. Durkheim noticed that there were 4 different reasons as to why people commit suicide. These included egoistic, altruistic, anomic and fatalistic. Although Durkheim’s research was useful when it come to studding suicide he missed out that people may choose to take their own life due to psychological reasons or due to a long term illness. This proves that there are so many different forms of suicide and that each case is individual and all personal documents differ when it comes to each person. Therefore, personal documents are not representative.
One reason why its hard to collect personal documents is the ethical issues. Its very difficult for family’s/friends to give their documents of those who have taken their own life. In

Using Material from Item C and Elsewhere Assess the Strengths and Limitations of Using Qualitative Documents as a Means of Investigating Suicide. (15 Marks)

...Using material from Item C and elsewhere assess the strengths and limitations of using qualitative documents as a means of investigating suicide. (15 marks) There is very important debate over the investigation of suicide, and which methods are best suited to do so. As said in Item C “suicide is a difficult topic to study because those who commit suicide are not available to research” and therefore some research methods are ruled out, for example observation. Qualitative documents include written texts such as diaries, letters and medical records; they can often include the writers’ feelings and attitudes and therefore can often provide rich, detailed information that Interpretivists can use to gather evidence. However there are both strengths and limitations to using this research method as a means of investigating suicide. One practical issue to using qualitative documents is gaining access to them. As said in Item C “many friends and relatives will be in a state of shock and grief” and so may be reluctant to allow researcher’s access to personal things to the victim such as their diary or suicide note, which could be key to discovering the real reasons behind the suicide. However a practical strength is that a lot of people who do commit suicide do leave a note which often gives an insight into the reasons why they did it, and so although it may be difficult to access; extremely useful qualitative data is there. An ethical issue when investigating suicide using qualitative...

Once can also define research as a scientific and systematic search for pertinent information on a specific topic. In fact, research is an art of scientific investigation. The Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English lays down the meaning of research as “a careful investigation or inquiry specially through search for new facts in any branch of knowledge.”1 Redman and Mory define research as a “systematized effort to gain new knowledge.”2 Some people consider research as a movement, a movement from the known to the unknown. It is actually a voyage of discovery. We all possess the vital instinct of inquisitiveness for, when the unknown confronts us, we wonder and our inquisitiveness makes us probe and attain full and fuller...

I f you were to ask 100 people, “Why do couples marry?” it is a safe bet that at least ninety would reply, “People marry because they fall in love.” Indeed, it is hard for us to imagine a happy marriage without love; likewise, when people fall in love, we expect them to think about marriage. But is the decision about whom to marry really so simple and so personal? There is plenty of evidence that if love is the key to marriage, Cupid’s arrow is carefully aimed by the society around us. In short, society has a number of “rules” about whom we should marry. What are they? Right off the bat, society rules out half the population because U.S. laws (despite recent actions in cities such as San Francisco and likely...
