WALKING INTO LIFE
(an article on the learning development of toddlers)

This statement is something I occasionally hear from my brother who has five children, eldest of them is 7, and from my sister who also has five children, of whom the eldest is also 7. These nieces and nephews of mine are indeed a bundle of joy for all of us. Being an aunt seems to be a favoured position: I get to pick them up from their house, play with them, enjoy tricks with them, and when they start whining for milk or demanding for something I cannot give, or they simply have to be tidied up, I can easily return them and avoid the task of being more than an aunt. Being in this position gives me a different perspective of toddlers. For an aunt, toddlers are simply cute and adorable. But for parents, they are not only adorable and cute; they are one crucial responsibility to carry as well.

So, are toddlers “Terrible Twos” or are they “Terrific Twos”?

When children learn to walk, they are called toddlers. Although the term is usually applied to one and two-year-old children, “toddler” is not a specific age, but a stage in the growth of a child which is unique to each one. Children have their own time-table. Some can walk, eat on their own, dress on their own earlier than others in the same age. Each child’s developmental pace differs, but one thing is common among toddlers: they all start to learn to be independent. That’s why 2 to 3-year-olds want to do things for and by themselves. In the classroom, the teacher delegates work to each student, who immediately feels he is capable of responsibility and can get something done. It’s funny and amazing how they grab the first opportunity to be given a responsibility in school.

Here are some guiding ideas about toddlers ... for parents, aunts, grandparents, and all the others surrounded by toddlers:

✓ Toddlers learn the most using their five senses: seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, and tasting. ✓ Toddlers treasure their toys so much that they won’t share them easily. Sharing is a learned skill, that is why it is important to introduce your toddler to a social setting. ✓ Toddlers want everything right now. They can barely wait. That’s why it is important to gradually train them in the virtue of patience. ✓ Expand your toddler’s vocabulary by constantly introducing new words. This can be reinforced by making known to the toddler the meanings of these new words. “Zip it” with a zipping action on the lips would mean “ssh!” ✓ Toddlers tend to generalize objects until around age four. Don’t be surprised if your child calls all meats ‘chicken’ or all vehicle ‘cars’. It takes time for toddlers to learn about categories. They think all pink stuff are for girls only and all blue stuff are for the boys only. ✓ Children become their parents, so do what you can now to help them become great parents later. ✓ Traditions are important. They have to be passed on from one generation to the next, and children do look forward to them. A simple classic tradition is how birthdays are celebrated. A party doesn’t always have to be there. But you surely cannot miss out on the birthday cake and chocolate ice cream!

For you parents, here are some activities which you can do with your toddlers ... to keep them away from the TV, to enhance their different senses, and to build the bond, the friendship and the love between them and you.

Wish List

this is easy. You will just need paper and pen.

When your child wants something at a store, take out the paper and write it down together. This just shows your child that you are listening and what he thinks and wants matter to you as well. This would also eliminate crying or tantrums.

This list can be used as a proof of reward for good or loving behaviour. Cross out each wish that is granted so your child can look back and appreciate your loving deed.

SING AND MOVE

Sing a few familiar songs together with your child. As you sing, march, clap your hands or stomp your feet in the beat of the music. Take turns reciting or singing your favourite nursery rhymes aloud. Agree on a certain nursery rhyme which both of you can sing together. Add some hand and body actions as you say the words. “Seven Days of the Week”, popularized by Barney and his friends, is a big hit with the kids. There is a set pattern for this but it is better to tap into the bodily-kinesthetic creativity of the children by asking their suggestions on how they think the actions should be. It is amazing how they can come up with such groovy dance steps that you wouldn’t have thought yourself!

I LOVE YOU Tell your child four things that you love about him / her. Write them on a sheet of paper and give it to your child to keep.

Likewise, let your child say or write four things he or she loves about you. Assure him/her that you will keep the paper among your belongings.

A TEXTURE FUN Children greatly learn when they use their sense of touch. For your materials, gather different textured objects, such as cotton balls, scraps of velvet fabric or felt paper, aluminium foil, sandpaper, “katcha”, dried leaves, and other such textured objects. Lay the textured objects on the ground, all visible to your child. (This activity is also fun done with more than one child.) Talk about the different ways things feel. Now, help them group together like-texture objects. Use describing words by saying, “This one feels soft. This one feels bumpy. ... Can you find another one that is soft? Can you find another one that is bumpy?” The, give them time to explore. Instruct and help them to put together in one place all the soft things, in another all the bumpy things, and do likewise for the other objects. This will enhance their skill to sort and categorize things. To make it more fun, after making the groups, let them mix them all up and go through the sorting process again. To go further on the activity (which can be done on another day), let them get hold of one of the objects they categorized, go around the house or the garden, and look for another object with the same texture. When they find something which they think have the same texture, let them ask the other children if they feel the same texture. This part of the activity will help enhance their comparative thinking.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN!

It is a fact that toddlers love to tear things down or pull things off. You can’t run away from this reality at this stage of your child. For it not to get into your nerves, turn this behaviour into something constructive for you and for your child.

Print out on a sheet of paper several butterflies (or planes, or cars, or any object of interest). Put a number on the portion of each picture before you cut them up. Now stick them on the wall high enough for your child to reach only when he jumps. They can be stuck in different heights so his reaching level also differs. Stick them in the order of the numbers from left to right. (This would be a good preparation for reading skill.) Then, let your child start jumping high and forcefully tear down the piece of butterfly (or whatever picture). Let him put what he tears down in a basket or a small bag. Make sure he pulls off the pictures in the right numbering order. You will probably have to guide him in looking for the next in sequence. Celebrate each item torn down in the right order with “hoorays” and clapping of hands.

Do this activity again on another day in another wall of the house. A variation of the activity is to stick the pictures in different pieces of furniture where they will have to work on the right sequencing.

READING TIME

Here are several tips to help promote love for reading at home.

✓ Choose a quiet time for reading, like before “siesta”, or bedtime, or after dinner. ✓ Choose a cozy place for reading, like a bean bag, or pillows piled on the floor, or on a rocking chair. ✓ Let the child choose the book he wants you to read aloud. ✓ Hold the book so that he can see the pictures. Better yet, let him also turn the pages. ✓ Don’t just read the story. Talk about it with your child. Point out the pictures, letters, shapes. ✓ Show interest in reading. It will be transmitted to your child. If they don’t see the interest, or if they see the boredom, they will also lose the interest. ✓ Make him also “read” a story and tell you about it. Make him tell you a story. ✓ Read to your child everyday.

All these activities would be more fun and more meaningful only if you are there playing with them. It is your presence that they need.

The list above is just to help you hone the development of your toddlers, who indeed are a big bundle of joy, which definitely makes them the “Terrific Twos”.

...anywhere is better than walking, don’t you think? We all know driving has its negative points while walking is great for our well-being, but most people prefer to drive any day of the week. First, let’s put as an example our jobs. Just thinking about walking to your job at 5:45 a.m. makes us feel real tired. Then, if you add to that walking for 5 days a week plus the roundtrip because you will need to get back to your home at some point, the thought of it just gets worst. At the same time you will be sweating, and sweating a lot! It just doesn’t look right if you get to your job at 7:00 a.m. all sweat and smelling as if you just got out of the gym. What if at the end of your work day you need to do something else? Or if you just crave an ice cream? Well, guess what? You can’t go because it is going to set you off track and is going to be a long walk back home. Meanwhile, if you like driving like the 86% of the population, your life gets a little bit easier. First, you don’t have to wake up as early as if you walk to get where you need to, and as a result you can rest a little more. When you get to your destination you will be fresh and clean, no sweat! Why? Because cars have air conditioner! In addition to that, if you need to do something else at the end of your day, like if you are craving ice cream, want to go to the movies, or just want to drive around, you can do it all because you have a car and prefer driving than walking. As I already said, walking has its benefits for...

Barn Burning Dichotomy

...In a cycle of repression, a person may need to do the unexpected. Maybe a courageous act of defiance is needed to get hope back into a life. In “Barn Burning” by William Faulkner, Sartoris, the main character, is a young boy on the path for a dim future because he is in a poverty-stricken family with a father who shows no care for him. After losing his hope, Sartoris must go against the ways of the rest of his family to ensure that he has a brighter future. Faulkner emphasizes that Sartoris has escaped misery and is heading down the path for a better life with the contrast of the family dynamic and the hopeful tone of the last two paragraphs. All of Abner’s emotion is reserved for society and everything except his family, and the small amount...

Walking

...there is so much more to walking than just simply walking. Mentally while walking around now, whether I am walking around UTC’s campus or walking around the mall, I think more about the way I am walking. I always think of the way I hold my hands and the way I pick up my legs and roll my feet. I have also learned from walking for fitness class how to walk distances in a shorter time and I also feel as if I can walk longer distances with less energy. When this class first started I felt so silly walking the way we were told to but now after I have walked that way so much I feel silly walking the way I did before. From this walking class I have learned that when I am walking I have learned that I always need to walk in a relaxed manner and try to walk tall and hold my head high. I am all the time constantly checking to make sure that my posture while walking is very good. I also have learned this semester from walking for fitness class that walking is the easiest way to start getting more active. It is also such an easy solution that can help with weight management. I find it to be really helpful considering I am always dealing with such a busy schedule. Another thing I have learned from this class is how walking helps reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. I find this knowledge so helpful because with such a busy schedule just finding the time this semester to take study breaks and to go walk for an hour or so really does help me. Walking also helps with reducing...

...LIFE. Life may have many definitions. Through out the centuries, people have sought to understand life in different ways. The mid-day of life is when one has become a full adult. The person could at this stage be married and have children or his or her own nuclear family. One at this stage is independent and makes his own decisions; self actualization can also be found at this stage. Many times, the focus of people at this stage is their family and work. The Pedestrian Analysis

...As B. F. Skinner once said, “The real problem is not whether machines think but whether men do”. In the story, The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury, the main character, Mr. Leonard Mead, lives in a futuristic world where technology has completely taken over human life. The problem that B. F. Skinner talked about has come true in its entirety; people fully rely on the machines that think for them, rather than thinking for themselves. This further proves that technology negatively affects society and its inhabitants. When technology is mistreated, the community and the people in it become destroyed. In the long run, a society that is overrun by technology becomes antisocial and disapproves of individuality. As seen in the story, technology takes...

Mosuo Walking Marriages

...The Mosuo are a small ethnic group living in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in China. Probably the most famous and most misunderstood aspect of Mosuo culture is their practice of walking marriages, also known as zouhun in Chinese. The coming of age ceremony, also known as the bonfire party, it’s the occasion when boys and girls at around 12-14 years of age get to know about each other. It is one of the most important events in a Mosuo child's life. Before this ceremony, Mosuo children will dress the same, and are restricted from certain aspects of Mosuo life. But once they come of age, girls are given their skirts, and men are given their pants (thus, it is called the “skirt ceremony” for girls, and the “pants ceremony” for boys). During the ceremony, boys and girls dance together, and decide whom you are interested in. For women to express love to men, double clicks in the men’s hand is okay. For men to show the good will for the particular woman, however, they are supposed to click three times and send out their knife, the symbol of their coming of age to the woman at the same time. After coming of age, Mosuo females can get their own private bedroom; and, once past puberty青春期, can begin to invite partners for walking marriages.  Traditionally, a Mosuo woman who is interested in a particular man will invite him to come and spend the night with her in the room. Such pairings are generally conducted secretly, so the man will walk to her house after dark, spend the night with...

Diabetes Mellitus

...Walk 30 Minutes a Day to Cut Diabetes Risks By Wendy Bumgardner November 9, 2014 No excuses - get out and walk for 30 minutes a day as your minimum daily requirement for health and to prevent Type 2 diabetes. A study by the Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh, published in the Oct. 1, 2003American Journal of Epidemiology discovered that walking for 30 minutes a day cut diabetes risks for overweight as well as non-overweight men and women. Reduce Diabetes Risk by Walking 30 Minutes a Day Complications of Type 2 diabetes are the leading causes of misery and death in the US - amputations, impotence, blindness, kidney failure, and shortening life by five to seven years. Yet this disease is preventable by lifestyle changes. Walk outdoors or on the treadmill each day, eat healthier and enjoy life rather than heading down the road to a life governed by blood sugar readings and disabilities. "We have found that men and women who incorporate activity into their lifestyles are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who are sedentary. This finding holds no matter what their initial weight," said study author and principal investigator Andrea Kriska, Ph.D., associate professor of epidemiology at GSPH. "This suggests that adopting and maintaining a program of regular physical activity similar to what the Surgeon General's recommendations suggest can play a significant role in preventing type 2 diabetes." Types of Dreams and Sleep Walking

...sleep walking. I will take you through the nightmare, the recurring dream, the flase awakning lucid dream and finally sleep walking body Main Point: First looking at nightmares, we all recognize that their mystery is first and foremost coupled with horror. The International Association for the Study of Dreams, or IASD, provides us valuable insight into their nature. Sub Point: The potential causes of a nightmare are varied. Creative, emotional, and sensitive people tend to have more nightmares, as they are more highly aware of their surroundings and circumstances (IASD 2013). For others, nightmares are side effects of drug and medication use. Others are the result of post-traumatic stress, including the loss of a loved one, assault, or combat (IASD 2013). in addition to daily stressful problems. Therefore, nightmares are thought to be psychosomatic mechanisms to call attention to the issues in our lives (IASD 2013). Main Point: The recurring dream provides less horror to our dreams, and also a deeper mystery. Recurring dreams are those dreams that we have over and over, as if it were a task that we keep trying to complete. In fact, Dr. Angel Morgan writes in the Huffington Post that it may be unfinished issues in our life that cause these types of dreams (Morgan 2014). Although occasionally nightmarish, recurring dreams can also be fascinating and pleasurable, and Dr. Morgan advises us to analyze the parallels between our recurring dreams and our real-life circumstances...

Short Story V. Poem

...pieces share is presented differently in each inditing. Robert Frost designed “The Road Not Taken” with specific designs in the narrative that revealed for me as the reader that there was a forthcoming journey. Frost also utilized the word “I” many times, which sanctioned me to imagine him alone. Comparative to this example let us compare “A Worn Path” where Welty utilized the word “she” throughout the writing piece. The linguistic choice inspired my imagination to visualize a woman walking alone. This visualization was reinforced in other places of the writing when the character spoke to animals to get out of her way: “Out of my way, all you foxes, owls, and beetles”. When Welty posed this conversation in the story, it gave me a sense of solitude. The submission that the woman also was walking a uphill path provided the symbolic comparison to a ‘hard life’. Walking uphill for any length of time is exhausting for anyone and when you add the notion of being elderly, it brings pity to this woman walking...
