Week 2
I have gone through first part of all the stories and decided to make the folio based on ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ as it sounds really interesting to me. After reading thoroughly the first part of the story, I can say that Mr. Morris, Sargeant-Major has gone through some rough and brutal phase for which he holds ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ guilty and responsible. There was some bitter fact that he hides from his friend, Mr. White though he warns him about the misfortune. As for Mr. White, I felt that he is curious to know about the truth behind ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ but at the same time somewhere down the line he has a greed of getting more by making wish to ‘The Monkey’s Paw’. Whilst Mrs. White and his son takes this issue in a humorous and light way.

From the very beginning author has set the mood of the story as suspicious and mysterious which fills the mind of the reader with a surge to reveal the unknown. From the suspicious environment created, it can be predicted easily that some ghosts and haunting is coming on the way.

Very cleverly author revealed that there is some misfortune related to the history of the monkey’s paw and a holy man has spelled something over the mummified paw of monkey but what is that misfortune? Also, what was happening upstairs after Mr. White wished for the first thing? These are yet unsolved questions.

Reading the very first part of the story, I can say that the story is filled with thrills, unexpected twists and will give us to read something that is unique. First part of the story is very powerful that has raised the expectations very high for the story as well as the way author has chosen to reveal the truth and mystery.

Week 3
‘The Drover’s Wife’, a short story that is described by the author in the most beautiful way ever. The most important and impactful portion of this short story was the narrative that has helped in setting the mood of the story. I realised that author has used the most suitable adjectives and has described each and every minute details in such a subtle way that one can easily depict the scenario and write a whole novel, let alone an essay.

Description of the environment of the house and the way of explaining the surrounding environment has given a very clear vision that how remote the area was. This helps the writer, writing essay on this story to analyse and describe the situation in a much better way.

As the story proceeds, author has given such a beautiful description of how brave the woman was by describing little past incidents which he stood by bravely. This gives a detailed vision of her bravery to stand by all the odds and lives in such a place that is filled with danger. Setting is of many type like setting as character, setting as metaphor etc. In ‘The Drover’s Wife’, setting of the character is the heart of the story. Author has not given any name to the Drover’s wife yet she is the central character of the story.

The emotion of a story, it’s central character and the message of the story can only be portrayed well through its setting. While writing an essay it is very important to know the theme of the story. Here, in ‘The Drover’s Wife’, the story described and cherished the victory of a woman against all odds. It tells about the sacrifices a woman does for her family. But none of these are stated directly rather the author has let the mood of the story to portray this.

Week 5
‘Dreadfully nervous he was and always had been but why would anyone call him mad? The disease had not destroyed or dulled his sense rather it had sharpened them. Acute hearing was the sense that was above all the others. He was capable of hearing even the lowest of sound in the earth and in the heaven. He can even hear the many sounds of hell. How can he be mad then? Hearken! And read his story calmly.

It is hard to say how the idea imbibed inside his brain; but once conceived, he was haunted by it day and night. There were no objective and so was the passion left in him. He loved that old man. He was never ditched by him and never ever insulted by him as well. He never desired for his gold. It was the eyes of that old man, that pale blue eyes which whenever fell upon him, his blood ran cold. He finally decided to take up the life of the old man and set himself free from the gaze of those eyes forever.’

Above is ‘The Tell- Tale Heart’ narrated in a third person limited point of view. It can be seen that in ‘The Tell- Tales Heart’ story is described from the first person view. When reading with the flow, reader tends to feel it as his own story contrary to the third person point of view. Third person point view always give a sense that the story is of someone else as it uses ‘he’, ‘his’, ‘him’ etc. to refer to the main character of the story.

The second person view on the other hand narrates the story using ‘you’ and ‘your’. Among all these ways of narration third person view is very common and is used by most of the authors. Second person view is less used. ("Google")

Week 7
The speaker came across a phase where his path diverges in a yellow wood; he regretted that he couldn’t choose both the paths. He had to traverse only one out of them. Finally, he came to a conclusion of opting the path that is less travelled but made a pledge that someday in his life he will travel the other road as well. Later in his journey he realises that both the roads are equally traversed and laments that he may never return to take the other path. The poet feels pain that how will he tell the story of the other road in future. At last, he gained consciousness that all the differences that changed his life for better was because he chose the road that was less travelled.

Did you notice anything different in the poem or story in the second and subsequent readings?

The true meaning and essence of the poem can be understood only when you read it twice. We tend to focus on the literal meaning of the words but when we read it twice or thrice then we realise the deep hidden meaning of the poem. Like in ‘The Road Not Taken’, the poet tells about his dilemma while deciding which road he must take and the regret of not taking the road that is traversed by many. Here, he is saying about the roads that we choose in life, that he chose in life. The road is used as metaphor to describe a much broader perspective, i.e., life. The road taken is meant for the decisions that he made in life. Hence, reading a poem more than one time gives a better insight of its meaning. Metaphors and similes are used to describe the complex decision making and way of living life by a simple example of choosing between the two roads.

Week 8
The most obvious symbol used in the poem “The Raven” is the Raven itself. The way raven whooshes inside the room and implicates dominion over the narrator shows the grave nature of the bird which symbolize the agonized memory of the author.

The unnamed narrator on one cold December night overhears a tapping on the door while he held a book in a jaded manner. He reflects in his mind in a reassuring manner that the stir was created by a mere stranger and then rebounds into his gloomy thoughts created due to passing away of Lenore and waits for the next day. He is stunned by the swishing curtains but reaffirms that the rustle was created by a late visitor. He moves towards the door, asking pardon from the visitor for not responding as he had been in a nap but as soon as he opens up the door, he hears and views nothing except the echoing noise of his own voice saying “Lenore”. Eventually it turns out that the visitor was none but a raven which could speak but could only utter one word “Nevermore” which later on leads to insane behaviour of the narrator.

Symbols simply put, can help create an enhanced and deeper meaning of a literary work. Often, they are also used to create a vignette of a situation and they are many- a- times left unexplained to let the reader decide and debate about its plausible meanings. This leaves ample room for discussion and understanding along with providing an opportunity for the reader to extend the canopy of their imagination.

Week 11
Six Gun Snow White is a mash up of snow white fairy tale and the author’s own retelling of this age old tale. This well narrated but succinct novel has such an enchanting way of describing events that it enthrals the reader and leaves them completely mesmerized and transfixed in the work. The author’s facility with words is outstanding and fits amiably with this speculative work of fiction. Although there are instances in the book which may sully the reading experience of the reader such as the ruthless description of Gun’s genitals, still the book does not dash the hopes of the readers and gives them a content worth cherishing.

There are various analogies drawn with the classic fairy tale of Snow white in this work. It encapsulates elements of age old Snow white such as Gun being the most beautiful daughter of the Crow people. Just as the Snow White, the protagonist of this tale is motherless as her mother passes away while giving childbirth and similar to Snow White, she was also raised in the guardianship of a cruel step mother. The protagonist is named “Snow White” after several years by her step mother and has to step into a cunning gun slinging world and survive with her own heroic instances and feelings.

Not only Valente uses these elements of similarity for her own purpose, but uses a witty manipulation of the story in her favour too. The title itself draws the reader towards the book and sets forth a wave of inquisitiveness in the reader. Since the basic elements and even the name of the protagonist are more or less the same, the reader does not get bored of the flow of the story line as they are already anticipating the outcome of the story in their mind.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

...The Great Pacific Garbage Patch This article is about the trash that ends up in the oceans and builds up into a giant garbage patch. When people throw their garbage on the ground it ends up in a small body of water and eventually travels into the ocean and gets stuck in this unbelievably large collection of trash. I think it is terrible when people litter because that litter ends up in the oceans and can hurt many animals. This problem is very serious and needs to be looked at as a bigger problem. Even though there are a lot of other problems going on in the world today, this is a big one that is affecting harmless animals all over. Plastic bags are mistaken for jellyfish, bottle caps are also, and are fed to baby birds. This is proven when birds die and left inside the body are tons of bottle caps and broken down plastic. I think this problem can be solved or at least made a little better. One possible solution is to ban plastic bags so people use the reusable ones. They could also make recycling a law. I am not sure how much can be done of what is already in the garbage patch, but we can try to keep it from getting worse. Because the water flows so far, there could always be places set up to pick up garbage that was missed earlier. This garbage patch is out of control and is only going to get worse, unless we decide to do something about it. It hurts animals, our water and will eventually hurt...

...is a moral issue because some people just do not care how much electricity they waist or that by using certain products they could save our planet from pollution. Pollution is another issue that is big concern in our world today. The community where I live has a chemical plant not far from it and over the years there have been many struggles to get them to dispose of their wastes properly. This is our world and if we do not take care of it by conserving energy and limiting pollution what will it be like for our children and grand children? Will there even be a world? Will there be diseases worse than cancer? These issues I believe are more of moral issue than anything else and it all comes down to respecting others as well as our homes and environments. To solve these issues I believe that there should be training available in the schools, work places and communities. Factories that have chemicals or cause any other kind of pollution should be punished for not obeying the laws and regulations on dumping wastes. Every employee should be made to take part in training for how to properly expose of waste without polluting our environment. I mean every employee that works for them. By providing training to them all then if they heard or seen something done wrong they could help resolve it. To help with using less energy, I believe some of the products on the market are way too expensive for the average household so they should be made less...

Use both sides of a paper, carry your own mugs to coffee shops and bring your own bags when you go shopping, or get printer cartridges refilled instead of replacing them. Compost food scraps, avoid bottled water and other packaged products, upgrade computers rather than buying new ones... the list is endless! Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Make it a habit to reduce the things we need or we consume. Purchase only things that we only need and eat only what you can. Let us do our share not to be part of the problem or should I say part of the garbage problem. Reuse all the things that can still be repaired/fixed or those things that are still okay. Recycle things to conserve our resources, collect old newspapers, books, magazines, used papers, bottles (plastic and glass), and any other things that you could sell in junkyards. There is money in garbage and at the same time we’re doing our part in recycling process.  Be responsible with your garbage, dispose them properly. Also try to use segregation scheme with your trashes, separate those decomposable from those that are not. You may utilize a compost pit to house all of your organic trashes and eventually use this as your fertilizer for your backyard garden or to your plants. Environment Pollution

...How to Prevent Pollution “This entire planet is our home. We are the only species that systematically destroy our own habitat."- Marianne Williamson Pollution prevention is an exceptionally major global concern because of the harmful effects of pollution on the person’s health and on the environment. Environmental pollution comes in various forms, such as: air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, etc. Everyone is a stakeholder as we are all inhabitants of this one and only mother earth. Each person has something to contribute to advance an effective pollution prevention awareness initiative. Environmental protection is caring for us, loving our children and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come. "If we heal the earth, we heal ourselves." You and I should therefore accept personal responsibility for the success of the environmental protection programs of our respective community by cooperating and actively participating in making the atmosphere pollution free. Help stop pollution today. Although on an individual basis we can help combat pollution in our own immediate environment, efficient control can be best institutionalized through legislation. Thus, most countries have already addressed the issue by passing some form of pollution prevention measures. Averting the onset of pollution in any area, i.e. be it on air, water or land, could be the start and the simplest preventive solution to the problem. This calls for a conscientious effort to adopt...

Environmental Racism

...Racism 2 In this current disenchanted world, there is no meaningful order of things or events outside the human domain. When the forests and the farms are no longer considered sacred and the spirits we tempted with food and sacrifice have no mysterious risks associated with the systematic rape of mother Earth. Then a disenchanted nature is no longer alive. The living Earth commands no respect, reverence or love. It is nothing but a giant machine, to be mastered to serve human purposes. The animists(1) took care of this planet on up to the last few hundred years. As man accidentally discovers the beginnings of commerce that opens the doors to an industrial nation, then an industrial world will soon discover industrial waste. Whether the notion that a mountain or a tree is to be regarded as a person is taken literally or not, the attempt to engage with the surrounding world as if it consists of other people might possibly provide the basis for a respectful attitude towards living things. If your disenchantment is over the environmental problems and destruction, then the environmental racism byproduct can be regarded as an attempt to reveal to you that we are part of the world collective and that we are in a sense, the world itself. Environmental racism(2) is one of the biggest problems the world faces today. Issues created by corporate polluters produce trouble in the form of economic, as well as, physical. For some individuals and cultures, it affects them every...

...irrigation, human consumption, as well as livestock consumption. Since water is a flow resource, it is affected by activities that have nothing to do with it. For example, a small feedlot may be on top of a hill, when the livestock waste runs to lower ground, it runs in the nearby canal, which then empties into the creek will affect neighboring water tables. This can contaminate the drinking water in the wells. The Federal government has imposed regulations of waste water through the Department of Environment Quality. Early in our history, America was quite delinquent with our management of waste. Perhaps the land seemed vast and lack of scientific knowledge led to poor waste management. Because of these practices, many drinking water sources were contaminated with harmful toxins. The Love Canal was a catalyst that got the federal government involved. “Though the federal government had established a long history of oversight of water resources…it was not until 1965 that the federal government finally put the solid waste problem on par with protection of water resources” (Roberts, 2011, sec. 1978-1980). State regulating agencies such my home state, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, have the latitude to regulate how citizens put in their waste systems. It is easier for state agencies to have a better idea of managing these guidelines since onsite visits would nearly be impossible if the...

Wal Mart Japan Case

...Japanese tends to prefer quality over low prices, which constrasts with Walmart core value as Wal mart's motto is Every Day Low Price. Also, Japan is a small country with limited spaces, which has several implications for Walmart. Small housings and apartment sizes, with high rent prices means that Japanese would need to minimize their purchases. Japanese are having trouble with lack of storage room to store purchases. For example, a typical apartment in Japan would be 1 room apartment with Living, Dining, and Kitchen area. A normal size of Japanese apartment are an average of only 27,55 sqm. Japanses likes to make several small purchases frequently. They minimize purchases, they would make their purchases several times a week, in small quantities. This means that stores would have to be readily available within reasonable distance, and bulk purchasing is discouraged. Compared to Walmart usual practice of centralized, big stores, with bulk purchasing to save costs, a neighborhood convenience store would be more suitable for the Japanese people. Japanese have high operating costs, especially because of the prices of rent and buildings in general. An average commercial land prices in Japan is 156,857 Yen (USD 2,017)/sqm, with average commercial land price in Tokyo reaching 1,551,400 Yen (USD 19,956)/sqm, followed by Osaka with average commercial land price of 493,700 Yen (USD 6,360)/sqm. Man Versus Nature: Technology Versus Environment: Money Versus Wild Life

...Man versus Nature: Technology Versus Environment: Money Versus Wild Life Bristol Bay Although the fishing industry has long been associated with the contribution of marine pollution little work has been done on the effects on the industry itself of marine debris and other pollution. The fishing industry is responsible for discarded nets, hooks, fishing poles, and many times sunken boats, among other gear. In many circumstances this is not the intended plan when going fishing to catch their paychecks. In fact the fishing industry pays a high price for these losses from the time they have to replace their nets to the pulling of old nets and trash out of their new nets on a regular basis. When questioned about the effects of marine debris on their fishing activities, Shetland fishermen responded that 92% had recurring problems with accumulated debris in nets, 69% had had their catch contaminated by debris and 92% had snagged their nets on debris on the seabed. Many also experienced fouled propellers and blocked intake pipes. On average, 1-2 hours per week were spent clearing debris from nets. Debris could cause a restricted catch and many boats avoided particular fishing areas altogether due to the high concentrations of debris. It has gotten to the point for many fishers that they can no longer fish certain areas known to be well stocked with money fish due to the time consuming issues with trash and fishing debris in those specific waters due to left behind gear. Ultimately...
