...Good management of waste has been crucial to Singapore, given its small land area and high density of built up living quarters. It is important that Singapore remains on the forefront of this industry to ensure that it can efficiently handle the increasing amount of solid waste, a staggering 30% rise in the last five years. The article mentions that Singapore is lagging behind in productivity. The high rise, high desnity house maybe a reason for this inefficiency. Take one key initiative of the National Recycling Program where there a door to door collection of recyclables once every fortnight. Given that Singapore’s dense housing system, this is labour intensive operations, which may result in a lower productivity. However, the article did not mention the forward thinking steps that have been taken to combat this problem. In order to reduce manpower to collate recyclables, 16 housing projects have undergone installation of separate recycling chutes. These chutes facilitate residents to directly dispose of recyclable waste, allowing workers to collect these the recyclables more efficiently compared to the prior method. Furthermore, these built in chutes at their doorsteps allows for greater ease for to the residents in their recycling efforts. These will target one of the key problems mentioned in the article, a lack of public participation resulting in plastic and food being incinerated. In pilot project conducted over a year, the housing estate with the new chutes recycled...

...momentum.The currency crisis has had a great impact on Vietnam, which adopts the ‘Doi Moi’ policy, and negative changes in regard to the outlook towards economic growth and foreign investment are becoming noticeable. However, since Vietnam joined ASEAN in 1995, improvement of hard and soft infrastructures, which contributes to Vietnam’s economic development,is well underway, and industrialization and urbanization are rapidly progressing. This has caused the gravitation of population towards cities, and the impoverished conditions of rural communities. The citizens are now facing the difficulty created by widening earning differentials between city and rural communities. The serious environmental pollution such as air pollution(CO2,SOx,NOx), waste disposal, and water pollution occurred in urban area. There is a need to work out a countermeasure to this situation, need for the sound economic development of Vietnam. It is necessary to perceive environmental and social effects precisely and to learn from the experience of environmental destruction in the Japanese economy which is described as “noneconomic mindedness of economy inconsiderate of environment” in order to achieve sustainable development. The objective of this paper is to grasp the relationship between industrialization/urbanization and environmental pollution,to examine the appropriate environmental management in Vietnam compared to the Japanese environmental management system. 1. Environmental pollution by industrialization...

...new product and some of the items being currently recycled are Paper, Plastic, Glass, Metals and Electronics (Ackerman, 2008). History of Recycling Waste management in Canada is considered to be a $5.6 Billion industry. Canada produced over 34 million tonnes of waste in 2008, out of which 25.9 million tonnes of waste was sent to public and private waste disposal facilities and the remaining 8.5 million tones was sent to recycling and composting, which has been practically unchanged since 2006 (Globe-Net, 2010). Waste management had become an issue of vital importance as Canada having a total of 800 landfill sites was facing a critical shortage of the landfill space with 30% already filled up leading to growing concerns about the environmental impacts of the traditional waste disposal methods. Reduction, Reuse, recycling and recovery were considered to play a key role in minimizing the wastes by 50% (Alberni Environmental Coalition, 1991). From a 16% recycling rate in 2003, Ontario had managed to increase the rate to 38% in 2008 which is very impressive. Different recycling programs have been put into place across different provinces in Canada, and the access to these recycling programs has increased from mid 1990’s to help reduce the amount of waste entering landfills and help conserve natural resources. As residential waste along with the...

...The Great Pacific Garbage Patch This article is about the trash that ends up in the oceans and builds up into a giant garbage patch. When people throw their garbage on the ground it ends up in a small body of water and eventually travels into the ocean and gets stuck in this unbelievably large collection of trash. I think it is terrible when people litter because that litter ends up in the oceans and can hurt many animals. This problem is very serious and needs to be looked at as a bigger problem. Even though there are a lot of other problems going on in the world today, this is a big one that is affecting harmless animals all over. Plastic bags are mistaken for jellyfish, bottle caps are also, and are fed to baby birds. This is proven when birds die and left inside the body are tons of bottle caps and broken down plastic. I think this problem can be solved or at least made a little better. One possible solution is to ban plastic bags so people use the reusable ones. They could also make recycling a law. I am not sure how much can be done of what is already in the garbage patch, but we can try to keep it from getting worse. Because the water flows so far, there could always be places set up to pick up garbage that was missed earlier. This garbage patch is out of control and is only going to get worse, unless we decide to do something about it. It hurts animals, our water and will eventually hurt...

...is a moral issue because some people just do not care how much electricity they waist or that by using certain products they could save our planet from pollution. Pollution is another issue that is big concern in our world today. The community where I live has a chemical plant not far from it and over the years there have been many struggles to get them to dispose of their wastes properly. This is our world and if we do not take care of it by conserving energy and limiting pollution what will it be like for our children and grand children? Will there even be a world? Will there be diseases worse than cancer? These issues I believe are more of moral issue than anything else and it all comes down to respecting others as well as our homes and environments. To solve these issues I believe that there should be training available in the schools, work places and communities. Factories that have chemicals or cause any other kind of pollution should be punished for not obeying the laws and regulations on dumping wastes. Every employee should be made to take part in training for how to properly expose of waste without polluting our environment. I mean every employee that works for them. By providing training to them all then if they heard or seen something done wrong they could help resolve it. To help with using less energy, I believe some of the products on the market are way too expensive for the average household so they should be made less...

...Carry reusable shopping bags at least some of the time, and save on plastic and paper bags. Waste less. There are hundreds of opportunities to nurture a zero waste culture. Use both sides of a paper, carry your own mugs to coffee shops and bring your own bags when you go shopping, or get printer cartridges refilled instead of replacing them. Compost food scraps, avoid bottled water and other packaged products, upgrade computers rather than buying new ones... the list is endless! Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Make it a habit to reduce the things we need or we consume. Purchase only things that we only need and eat only what you can. Let us do our share not to be part of the problem or should I say part of the garbage problem. Reuse all the things that can still be repaired/fixed or those things that are still okay. Recycle things to conserve our resources, collect old newspapers, books, magazines, used papers, bottles (plastic and glass), and any other things that you could sell in junkyards. There is money in garbage and at the same time we’re doing our part in recycling process. Be responsible with your garbage, dispose them properly. Also try to use segregation scheme with your trashes, separate those decomposable from those that are not. You may utilize a compost pit to house all of your organic trashes and eventually use this as your fertilizer for your backyard garden or to your plants. Do the traditional way of helping to conserve our environment by virtue of avoiding...

...How to Prevent Pollution “This entire planet is our home. We are the only species that systematically destroy our own habitat."- Marianne Williamson Pollution prevention is an exceptionally major global concern because of the harmful effects of pollution on the person’s health and on the environment. Environmental pollution comes in various forms, such as: air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, etc. Everyone is a stakeholder as we are all inhabitants of this one and only mother earth. Each person has something to contribute to advance an effective pollution prevention awareness initiative. Environmental protection is caring for us, loving our children and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come. "If we heal the earth, we heal ourselves." You and I should therefore accept personal responsibility for the success of the environmental protection programs of our respective community by cooperating and actively participating in making the atmosphere pollution free. Help stop pollution today. Although on an individual basis we can help combat pollution in our own immediate environment, efficient control can be best institutionalized through legislation. Thus, most countries have already addressed the issue by passing some form of pollution prevention measures. Averting the onset of pollution in any area, i.e. be it on air, water or land, could be the start and the simplest preventive solution to the problem. This calls for a conscientious effort to adopt...

...CONCENTRATE FEED STUFFS Concentrate feeds are feed that are high in nutrients but low in fibre. a. CARBONATIOUS CONCENTRATES: These are high energy feeds, mostly grains and its by-products. According to Natural Research Council (NRC), these are feed products containing less than 18% fibre. Below are some of their examples: i. MAIZE (CORN): this is the most popular and widely fed grain in the world.it is high in enegy about 18% Total Digestible Nitrogen (TDN), high in phosphorus and calcium, high in thymine, high in lysine but in bound form in pigs, low in protein (white maize 8-9%, yellow maize 11-12%), low in Vitamin D, Riboflavin and pantothenic acid. ii. SORGHUM GRAIN: For maximum digestibility, it should be ground into particles (not powder). It contains high amount of energy, about (75-80% TDN), high protein, about (8-12%), low in carotene, low in calcium and fair in phosphorus. iii. WHEAT GRAINS: this contain high energy about (80% TDN), and (12-14%) crude protein. b. PROTEINATIOUS CONCENTRATES: This could be of plant or animal origin, and the quality and content is highly determined by its processing. Supplements of plant origin are mainly oil seed meals. The manufacturing process of oil seed meal could be ‘’expeller’’ or ‘’hydrolic’’. Expeller process; the seeds are crushed, heated in steam or cooked, then it is pressed to remove oil and the cake is ground. Solvent (hydrolic) process : the seeds are cracked, heated mildly, rolled, oil extracted with...

...Racism 2 In this current disenchanted world, there is no meaningful order of things or events outside the human domain. When the forests and the farms are no longer considered sacred and the spirits we tempted with food and sacrifice have no mysterious risks associated with the systematic rape of mother Earth. Then a disenchanted nature is no longer alive. The living Earth commands no respect, reverence or love. It is nothing but a giant machine, to be mastered to serve human purposes. The animists(1) took care of this planet on up to the last few hundred years. As man accidentally discovers the beginnings of commerce that opens the doors to an industrial nation, then an industrial world will soon discover industrial waste. Whether the notion that a mountain or a tree is to be regarded as a person is taken literally or not, the attempt to engage with the surrounding world as if it consists of other people might possibly provide the basis for a respectful attitude towards living things. If your disenchantment is over the environmental problems and destruction, then the environmental racism byproduct can be regarded as an attempt to reveal to you that we are part of the world collective and that we are in a sense, the world itself. Environmental racism(2) is one of the biggest problems the world faces today. Issues created by corporate polluters produce trouble in the form of economic, as well as, physical. For some individuals and cultures, it affects them every...

...irrigation, human consumption, as well as livestock consumption. Since water is a flow resource, it is affected by activities that have nothing to do with it. For example, a small feedlot may be on top of a hill, when the livestock waste runs to lower ground, it runs in the nearby canal, which then empties into the creek will affect neighboring water tables. This can contaminate the drinking water in the wells. The Federal government has imposed regulations of waste water through the Department of Environment Quality. Early in our history, America was quite delinquent with our management of waste. Perhaps the land seemed vast and lack of scientific knowledge led to poor waste management. Because of these practices, many drinking water sources were contaminated with harmful toxins. The Love Canal was a catalyst that got the federal government involved. “Though the federal government had established a long history of oversight of water resources…it was not until 1965 that the federal government finally put the solid waste problem on par with protection of water resources” (Roberts, 2011, sec. 1978-1980). State regulating agencies such my home state, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, have the latitude to regulate how citizens put in their waste systems. It is easier for state agencies to have a better idea of managing these guidelines since onsite visits would nearly be impossible if the...

...Japanese tends to prefer quality over low prices, which constrasts with Walmart core value as Wal mart's motto is Every Day Low Price. Also, Japan is a small country with limited spaces, which has several implications for Walmart. Small housings and apartment sizes, with high rent prices means that Japanese would need to minimize their purchases. Japanese are having trouble with lack of storage room to store purchases. For example, a typical apartment in Japan would be 1 room apartment with Living, Dining, and Kitchen area. A normal size of Japanese apartment are an average of only 27,55 sqm. Japanses likes to make several small purchases frequently. They minimize purchases, they would make their purchases several times a week, in small quantities. This means that stores would have to be readily available within reasonable distance, and bulk purchasing is discouraged. Compared to Walmart usual practice of centralized, big stores, with bulk purchasing to save costs, a neighborhood convenience store would be more suitable for the Japanese people. Japanese have high operating costs, especially because of the prices of rent and buildings in general. An average commercial land prices in Japan is 156,857 Yen (USD 2,017)/sqm, with average commercial land price in Tokyo reaching 1,551,400 Yen (USD 19,956)/sqm, followed by Osaka with average commercial land price of 493,700 Yen (USD 6,360)/sqm. I suppose it is very expensive compared to the U.S. They are also inability to apply original...
