Many people would like to believe that Discrimination in the Health and Social care setting has no place. However it does happen. (Beryl Stretch and Mary Whitehouse Health and social care level 3, book 1 2010: 65) Discrimination can take on many forms. Working in this sector we need to understand and recognise when discrimination is happening in order to do this we first need to know what discrimination is and what the bases of discrimination are.
What is discrimination? Discrimination is when a person shows prejudicial or unjust treatment towards someone due to their * Culture * Disability * Age * Social class * Gender * Sexuality * Health status * Family status * Cognitive ability
Culture is the way of life people are brought up in. Culture is passed on from one generation to the next and is seen in peoples writing, music, clothes and cooking and what they do. (www.simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture )
For example Mrs x is from the Caribbean where they take things slower and enjoy life at a slower pace. She enjoys a relaxed laidback attitude towards life. Because of this her family and friends joke she will be will be late to her own funeral. However when Mrs x recently when to a interview for a job she was turned away because they felt she would always be late due to her culture and where she was from.

Disability is something that limits a person’s movements, senses or activities.
For example Mr M has been working for the same company for the last five years and has never once paid any attention to the fact that there was no accessible entrance for people in wheel chairs or a means of getting between the two floors in his office. Mr M was involved in a recent accident which has left him in a wheelchair for a while, when he was fit enough to return to work he was faced with the fact he could not enter the building or travel between floors. Once Mr M spoke to the manager he was left unable to work and feeling discriminated against as there was no access for wheelchairs.
Age discrimination is when a person is treated unjustly due to their age.
For example “Direct age discrimination would occur if, for example, an employer refused to employ people under the age of 30, believing them to be unreliable as such a reason, being nothing more than a negative stereotype, is unlikely to be justifiable. It would also be direct age discrimination to have, without lawful justification, a compulsory retirement age for your employees no matter whether it is set at 55, 60, 65 or 70 years or at any other age”. Social Class where a person is from or where a person is in social circles upper class, middle class, lower class.
For example “The poor are still far more likely to get cancer than the rich, and their chances of survival are lower too. Furthermore there are too many variations in the quality of care and treatment across the country, leaving cancer patients frustrated by a postcode lottery “. Gender this is when someone is discriminated because of their sex.
For example a group of men and a group of women are all in a queue for a night club upon entering the women are allowed to go in for free but the men are charged.

Sexuality is a person’s sexual preference. Whether it’s Gay, Lesbian, Heterosexual, and Bisexual.
For example a manager not promoting someone purely on the grounds that they are pansexual and they don’t agree with it.
Health status the unfair treatment towards someone with health problems.
For example refusing to look after a service user because they have been diagnosed with HIV.
Family status whether a person is married, single or a parent.
For example a couple go to a B&B that has advertised a room available. When they get inside the owner turns them away because it’s advertised as a family room, however the couple would have been happy to pay full price for the room. The owner still refuses as they are not a family.
Cognitive ability is the capacity to perform higher mental processes of reasoning, remembering, understanding, and problem solving.
For example a person who used to be able to concentrate for long periods of time and had a job as legal secretary has a brain injury and is no longer able to concentrate for more than five minutes at a time has been told their job is no longer available because they can’t concentrate.
The impact of discrimination is often much greater than you may think. It can impact a person physically, emotionally, economically, socially and can affect one’s career and academic performance or potential. (http://equity.ubc.ca/discrimination/impact-and-consequences)
Four of the main impacts caused by discrimination are displayed in some of the following ways.

Emotional: * Anger * Anxiety * Depression * Fear * Feelings of isolation * Self-blame and guilt

Physical Impacts * Change in appetite * Decreased energy * Headaches * Insomnia or other sleep disturbances * Stress-related ailments
Social Impacts * Alcohol or drug use/abuse * Dependency on another person(s) for support * Generalized fears of people or things that remind one of the harassment * Others may distance themselves from a complainant because they don’t want to get involved or don’t understand what she/he is experiencing * Physical or emotional withdrawal from friends, family and co-workers
Organizational Costs * Higher employee turnover * Litigation * Low morale and/or decreased productivity * Tarnished public image * Work or study unit disrupted by gossip, frustration and choosing sides
