...summer before I head to college for the first. I am excited to get out of the house and have no rules to really obey by. As I packing and unpacking my items for college and feeling like something is missing. I am the type of person that needs some type of structure in my life so, of course I have a long list of items to bring to college with me. The day of move in day, my mom and I are shoving all the boxes into the car and not being able to see out of the back window just to get to school to take all the boxes out and up to the fourth floor of Evans Hall. The hallways were filled with boxes and people. Families start saying their goodbyes and I beginning unpacking my boxes to make the room look less like a prison and more like a comfy place to stay at. I am trying to figure out to do and what was not allowed like wearing your lanyard around your neck is how people can point out who the freshman are. With coming from a small town and everyone knowing everyone to coming to a town that the size of my graduation class for college is about the size of my whole school district. Only about six kids from my graduation class came to Oshkosh with me so, coming to college felt like a lonely world in the beginning. I started to figure out who I really was and what I want to do with my life....

...first thought about college was that I would come in and sit down in an hour class and take notes all day. That’s not the case some classes are hands-on and other are note taking classes. A thing I did not want to start doing was being late to class. This is a bad habit for me because I am generally late to my classes in high school. Which I get tardies and then that later turns into after school detention. How use to take note was I would copy everything word for word. Now I short hand all of my notes, because I could get all of the notes done in time. So I would go home and not have the right notes to study for a test. How I study for a test was I would just look over my notes and go to bed. Now I would look over my notes and make annotations on them. Sometimes I would ask another person to quiz me on some of the martial. Then I would review it before the test so it’s fresh on my memory. How I would manage was I would just put things and do something else. Now I get the projects and homework done on time. So I can have free time to do what ever I want to....

...has helped me learned many things about what to expect in college. The first thing I learned in class was the location of the Writing Center. When I moved to college, I did not have a clue where any of the buildings were located. However, I soon learned where the Writing Center is located because we had a class there. It is important for me to know where the Writing Center is located because it is likely I will need to go there while I am in college. Another thing I learned in class was how to form an appropriate email. In class we had an etiquette email assignment. I always knew how to write an email, but I never knew how I should address a professor in college. I learned that for this class I could say “Dear Kate”, but if I emailed...

...At the beginning of my college class reading 091 we distinguished what a passive and active reader are and which type of reader we were ourselves. In the process, we learned how we best learned and what type of learner, we were, I was a logical learner, which meant I used reasoning and systems to think and build conclusions to learn. This class helped me build knowledge, comprehensions skills, and distinguished how to apply what I know from a text to analyze and evaluate it to better understand what I was reading. I know that as freshmen this year you might think college is difficult which it is but do not get discouraged because the work you put into school you get back and build from. Reading 091 is a stepping stone to your future....

...What worked? What worked for me, the most was being able to take online college courses. I always wanted to earn a college degree, yet never had the time because of family obligations. When I looked at Ashford University and what it had to offer, it allowed me to be able to, not only take LIB courses online, but also take care of my family at the same time. I had always wanted to do something in the educational field, and now, by taking LIB courses at Ashford, I am continuing towards a Master’s Degree in Education with a specialization in Instructional and Curriculum Design. Doing this never would have happened if it was not for online college. What didn’t work? The only thing that did not work was not having a break in between classes. Taking one course for five weeks, and then having to take the next five-week class right afterward was sometimes difficult to do because I felt “burned out.” Having a one-week break in between classes would give a student a chance to breathe and refresh their...

...I didn’t expect to do a lot of anything in College Composition. I thought to myself that I could use the class period as an extra study hall to make sure I had my other classwork done and finish any actual “assignments” the night before they were due. To be honest, I treated the class as so for a while. It wasn’t until after my first essay that I realized how I could improve my writing in preparation for college now instead of later. I didn’t realize that I tend to write in a passive tense every other sentence until now. I also, often, used, too many comma splices, which butchered the flow of my writing. I sometimes missed the MLA format details which lowered my scores early on. After I submitted the last essay, I was glad that I didn’t sign up for English IV. I enjoyed some papers...

...How I Learned Essay In the beginning I was debating on should I go to school or just stay at home, and just stick to playing the organ at church. Something in my head told me to go ahead to go back to school so I can further my education. Since I love to be on the computer all the time I decided to find something to do with computers. When I heard my brother and my friend came in the house talking about Brown Mackie College. I looked in the book and then that’s when I saw Information Technology I knew it would be something very interesting when I looked at the courses. The first day of class in Professional Development, the first thing I learned how to get out of my box. Because I have always been scared to get out of my box, I never got a chance to make any friends, or got to know most of my teachers in school. This class has helped me out a lot, because I have got a chance to get to know my fellow classmates and made new friends. Getting out of my box gave me confidence that I really need. Stepping out of my box has shown me that I can make friends on campus and off campus. Second, we talked about in class was “What exactly is Success in College”. Success in College to me is really a challenge for me. All because I was used to being at home, and just going to church, I didn’t think about going back to College. I have already succeeded because I had enough courage to go back to school and further my education. Here my keys to be Successful in College: 1. Showing up to...

...The EOF program prepared for college by teaching me social skills, valuable writing skills, and whether I wanted to live on campus or not. In EOF, I learned how to be more social. In high school, and even before in elementary school, it is easy to make friends. Mostly my friendships were developed by being placed in similar classes and familiarity. However, in college that is not the case; I quickly learned that making friends in college is completely random. Friendships are created by strange chance happenings. The EOF program helped me to approach people first and not to wait. The close friends I have in this program are not in my classes and began simply with a game of UNO. I plan on keeping my EOF friends close to me, but I learned the...

...beneficial, and exciting. I learned many things in AVID such as the proper way to take notes, how to be more organized, more about college, more about my peers, and how to keep up with my grades. This helped me alot because I will use this knowledge from now on. But AVID also help me academically because we did TRF’s that help me with confusion, grade checks, and binder checks. Binder checks helped me be more organized instead of having papers from different class mixed up. Grade checks help me stay on top of my grades, and check powerschool at least 4 times a week. AVID was fun for me because we took trips, had parties, did activities on most fridays, and did work that was fun instead of complicated. The trip we took to Camp Manitoqua was fun because we did team building activities but, had fun while doing it. When we did the “campfire” in class on fridays or, the activity when we went around and answered the question, then ate our marshmallow or poptart, helped us learn more about each other. The good news warm helped us express ourselves, give good news, and start our morning right. Almost everything that we did was fun and exciting....

...1001 11 December 2015 What is Success in College What does it take to succeed in college? When I think of success I think of achieving something that I have desired, planned or attempted. A successful college experience for me would be developing important study skills such as how I can study, what I can do in and out of the classroom, and how I can manage my time. It is often claimed that the most successful college students attain success because they are only smart and study hard. Success in college for me goes beyond intelligence and hard work. It depends on my motivation and developing good study habits. My motivation is the reason I am at college. No one motivated me but myself. In the book What the Best College Students Do, Ken Bain talks about how making straight A’s is nice. I agree with him. He also says that straight A’s hardly guarantee a happy or productive life. In order to succeed it takes a personal sense of purpose. To have success we need to make good decisions and have self-confidence. In order to be a successful student I need to be a risk taker and make connections. Rather than chasing success, I have to achieve it. Bain details that there are three types of learners: surface, who do as little as possible to get by; strategic, who aim for top grades rather than true understanding; and deep learners, who leave college with a real, rich education. In high school I was a surface learner. I did not always apply myself like I should have. Doing the bare...

...had me answer questions before I read two articles, I answered these questions to what I believed in and how I thought the government was handling certain things. I learned that Obama is trying to raise the minimum wage and is trying to help college goers by trying to reduce student debt. I learned that there are some things that I am unsure of. My answers before I read the two articles did not change after I read the two articles. I still believe that higher education prices are too pricey and that if it wasn’t so high that our unemployment percent would not be as high as it is because people could afford to go to college. I do not think that the minimum wage should increase because the jobs that give minimum wage are jobs for children in school or people that are unable to work in the working environment. I think that if Obama raises minimum wage then people will not care that they don’t have an education and take the jobs that, for example, a first job for a teenager would work. I believe that if minimum wage is raised to $10.10, than people will not attend college to get the degree, but will still be making a decent amount of money that one of the lowering paying jobs make but require a degree. From this assignment I learned that there is a lot going on in the government that I am not fully aware of. Although, I have my opinions on what I think should happen, I did not realize that Obama was taking action on these things. I learned that I need to pay attention more to...

...” – Waldo Emerson. When I was in high school, I often long to know what will my future laid. I often wonder what will I become or what will I have done. I also wonder how will I be able to adapt to the label as a “college student”. About eight weeks ago, I arrived to CSUN ( California State University of Northridge) as a college student, no longer a high student or a visitor, and I felt nervous but excited to see what does CSUN have to provide for me. Eight weeks went by fast, and now when I write this essay, I look back those wonderful eight weeks seem so yesterday. I met a lot of new faces, new names and I still cant remember all of their names because I've met SO many people in eight weeks. I discovered a whole new environment, new places, and a whole new journey for me. I learned how to deal with my roommates, learned how to adapt with them and work as a teamwork. I learned how to manage my time with social time and my education time. I learned that the classes are simple but yet hard. I learned how to deal with teachers, students and interpreter. Most of all, I enjoyed a lot being here as a CSUN student. Back in high school, I went to a mainstream school, Poly High School Riverside, I was one of those four deaf kids out of 4 thousand students. I was well known around my high school and around my community. I was well known for involving ASB (Associate Student Body government) and involving with sports such as soccer, volleyball and water polo. I also was well known for having...

...In Kenneth Oldfield's article "Humble and Hopeful: Welcoming First Generation Poor and Working Class Students to College," he discusses the situation he faced when he had no role models who have experienced college. He argues that there should be more done for first generation students. He wished he had known more about college. Oldfield discusses six specific lessons that he wishes he knew before he started college as a first generation student. I relate most to the second lesson—“I wish I had known the real purpose of college before I started.” I relate most to the second lesson because I am a first generation student and I didn’t have anyone to tell me what the real purpose of college is. Like the author, I assumed that the purpose of...
